As someone who went from 5.1 to 5.1.2 and then to 5.1.4, I can say the added rear heights was more noticeable/impactful than adding just the front heights. But you know what ended up having the biggest difference? When I went from 5 mains to 7. I actually had an intermediate step while I waited for my rear heights to arrive, when I installed 2 more floor channels (going 7.1.2) and the added surrounds made a huge difference, more so than Atmos. Because while Atmos is more popular in UHD discs...many more discs make use of 7 floor channels. So for those looking to expand beyond 5.1, I now would always recommend going 7.1 first, and then 7.1.4 if you can mount them either on ceiling or high up your walls (don't bother with upward firing speakers). Another recent addition I made which resulted in a huge difference was a second sub...but let's not go there just yet. :)

From everything I have heard the .4 compared to the .2 is better, however really depends on a lot of variables, most importantly your room. I would think adding two additional high channels to an existing .2 system is a small difference compared to going from zero hight 2:54 channels to going to.

I have been enjoying front heights for a couple of years and then recently added middle wides and rear heights but only consider it a slight improvement. There doesn’t seem to be enough good content out there (movies that I’m interested in) to take full advantage it seems. I’d rather watch a great old movie without Atmos/DTS/Auro than a new one that is lacking in story and production but has a great soundtrack.

Its not just content, surround and rear channels usually provide "fill" and not directional action. I actually have my 5.1.2 system with the surrounds behind both slightly off axis. I find in many mixes having the surrounds too directional towards my ears confuses the front stound stage instead of being immersive. ATMOS tells you not to do this. That all speakers should be as equidistant as possible to pass sound cues off to one another 360°. This is a reason these weird dipole and bipole multidirectional surrounds were popular because surrounds sound better not directed at the back of your head I find that two atmos directed at the listener between where they recommend front and side heights to work well, far enough to be distinct from the fronts but still part of the front wall of sound

Thank you for the reference to the Harry Potter "pixie" scene. I'm always looking for good movie examples to test my setup. I use 7.2.6 with my Denon X8500HA and I have on-wall front heights, and in ceiling top middle and top rear (which lets me use Auro 3D if I want). I think if I were to setup my height layout again, I would go with rear on-wall heights to maximize coverage and separation. I thought he TechnoDad video he has demonstrating Atmos sound movement up/down, left/right and front/back was cool, as I could hear how the designated position and movement sounded in my actual setup. Now we just need more movies with with effort put into the height channels!

I’ve recently upgraded to .6. What I like about it is it enables me to keep my front heights in a stereo pair, 30° over my FL and FR speakers. This allows vertical imaging to take place with objects on the screen. My top middles I have slightly forward of the MLP which was always recommended in a .2 set up. My back surrounds I raised up 10° above ear level which brings a slightly increased sense of height, then spit the difference between those and top middles with my rear heights. This maintains channel separation and produces I nice imaging for flyover effects when object based sounds pass through them.

@@thelonestranger777 yep, I made all the holes. Moved them in and moved them out, forward and back until they were just right in my opinion. It only took three positions, 1 foot forward and 1 foot outward and then I just moved the mounting brackets between them a few times. Spackling and re-texturing (if needed) a few screw holes is pretty easy. Ultimately ended up with sort of an equilateral geometric dome with all speakers, so the Atmos speakers are in a perfect square. Even with the static 7.1.2 bed mixes, 4 heights lets those static objects at top mid come equally from the 4 heights, which gives it a more generalized overhead sound that many mistake for discrete height usage (like in Ready Player One). The down side is... In a x.x.6 layout with those mixes, only the top mids will get used, barring any exotic processing in your pre-pro.

  • @ealanosborne

    @TheReverendSlim

    Жыл бұрын

@@ealanosborne If you dig into Shane Lee's channel, you'll find that quite a few movies use two static height objects with no dynamic. The static height objects will always try to play at top mid... so with 4 heights, it will play between them to try to image at top mid. With 6, it will just play from top mid, and the other two pair will go unused. Ready Player One is one of the most obvious. All 4 Indiana Jones movies are static 7.1.2. Sadly, Top Gun Maverick is static for about 98% of the movie. So when you do your comparison, I would stick with movies known to have fully dynamic object mixes - Dune, Midway, etc. But it's something to be aware of for people wanting to go x.x.6. Studios are getting better about it... but still not consistently using it in a way that supports all the channels.

I have to say this is the best explanation of atmos height in my two weeks of research, I'm building a custom home and trying to work this concept out in my head. Thanks! I have the opportunity to have 4 height channels prewired and will go ahead and have that done. I was wondering as to the height of the rear surrounds? Are these supposed to be at ear level?

  • @ealanosborne

Correct! If you didn’t have any height speakers at all, you can get away with elevating the rear surrounds about a foot or two above ear level. But with heights, it’s best to keep all the other speakers at ear level. 🎉

Punching holes, drilling studs, running cables, etc. Because of the seating position, a sectional near back wall, we decided on a 7.1.2 not being able to get rear heights in proper or ideal spot as spec’d by Dolby. Writing this to thank you Ealan. I was planning to upgrade from a Samsung soundbar with surrounds to an immersive Dolby Atmos experience through an AV receiver. Your channel helped me the most and I was able to build a budget 5.1.4 under CAD 3500 (approx 2500 USD) even though things are a bit expensive here in Canada. Quite happy with the result. Pioneer VSX-LX305 9.2 receiver (8k enabled) Klipsch R51M fronts Klipsch R41M rears Klipsch Reference 5.1 theater pack as center, front and rear heights, and subwoofer Pioneer's MCACC tuning has given a bit more warmth and mid-range to the bright Klipsch speakers. No complaints so far. Will be experimenting with DIRAC live soon as my learning curve increases. I saw you adding an SVS 12" as your second sub. I have a 5.1.4 system with, since I didn't want to punch holes in my living room ceiling, SVS Prime Elevations as standard front and rear heights. After an Audyssey calibration I set their levels 3-4 dbs hotter than than Audyssey did. I did watch TechnoDad's excellent study of height speaker placement and his demo clip basically placed the sounds where they should be, I also have one of the later Dolby Atmos demo discs with a bunch of different clips from pure demos to music, movies, just audio, games, etc. It has that opening sequence from Mad Max Fury road and his voice and the whispering voices all around him sound great. Same thing with the helicopter demo and Amaze. I also, as an experiment, did an Audyssey run with the Elevations set as front and rear tops. They had maybe slightly more immersive sound but at the expense of some volume. The bottom line for me is that front/rear heights, even as a compromise, sound very good with Atmos and DTS:X audio tracks.

@@ealanosborne You're welcome. I doubt that many people have large enclosed home theater rooms so many of us deal with living rooms, family rooms with one or two open sides so no matter what speaker setup you choose there's always going to be some compromises. I originally had two Prime Elevations set up as front heights. They were decent sounding but then I tried them as front tops and front top middles on the two Denon Presets. Both setups created a reasonable level of immersion with the middles sounding better. Sure it's against all of the standard orthodoxy but, ultimately, your ears decide what you like. Adding the second pair of Prime Elevations (and they are really very good speakers that can be effectively crossed over at 80 Hz) gave me a much better front to rear sound spread with some decent overhead effect. Compromise? Sure but, again, your ears, even if fooled into a perception, will tell you whatever works in your particular room

I don’t have any in-ceiling or on-ceiling heights, except for the Voice of God speaker straight above my listening position. Although only my Marantz SR7015 does Auro 3D for Voice of God, which is not hooked up at the moment. 😄

Do you think if I invested in a further two SVS speakers and placed them at the front and rear of the room my experience would be better?

4 height channels sound much better than 2. Had the Denon s760h then upgraded to Denon x3700h for the additional channels. Speaker placement is super important. Depends on your room size and ceiling height. Need to make sure speakers are at the correct angles from the main listening positioning. Properly placed, movies like John Wick sound amazing! However, most movies don't have good Atmos mixes so... You really want need to want to have the best experience watching John Wick, or hopefully , Top Gun Maverick at home to make it worth it

I currently have a pre-Atmos receiver with a 7.1 system. Due to room restrictions (rear window), the rear speakers are actually at the top of the rear wall. When I do my Atmos upgrade, should I go to 5.1.4 and use those as rear height? Just wondering if I’ll miss the rear channels with 7.1 source material (such as games from my Xbox Series X)…

I have the exact same dilemma. My rear surrounds are a few feet below ceiling (mounted 8' up) and if I add Height ATMOS (wall mounted) speakers, worried that the rear surrounds will be muddling the rear heights. On the fence about dropping to 5.1.4 to get full ATMOS or add rear heights to keep 7.1.4 and just live with the potential muddling.

Great video. Have a 5.2.2 bit for my middle Atmos speakers I ended up putting 4 speaker's place unevenly. For me gave great results. Plus my front speakers also plug on same wire some smaller speakers like a feet back from them slightly place " wider" than my front ones. So for Mad Max and Harry Potter scene you speak sound is impressive. I'm curious to experiment what you explain. But a receiver with 9 channel is $$$ plus would need extra speakers. Would I gain front it???

If you get an AVR like the new Denon x3800h, you would gain not only better height effects, but the capability of expansion in the future. You wouldn’t have to rely on the amplifiers inside the AVR forever. You could expand into using external amplifiers, which can more easily power larger, more powerful speakers that you eventually upgrade to over time. 👍
