I'm happy with my Diesel Gladiator so far with 20k miles on it. I got the heavy duty cooling option when I ordered it and haven't experienced any de-rating so far. I also installed a 40 gallon transfer flow tank in the back, so I don't have any range issues. I can go 1,200 miles between gas stations. Every Diesel car I've ever had has an extended warranty on the emissions parts (120k miles), but I've never had any issues. The DEF usage is a little high, but not a deal breaker. It's using 10 gallons of DEF every 10k miles.

Interesting perspective on the Diesel. I've owned mine for 2 years now and have just over 40K miles on it. We did start experiencing the "de-rating" as you call it, pretty much immediately after purchasing and installing 37's. It got worse when we re-geared to 4.56s, lifted it and went to 40's. Fast forward to about 2 months ago and we had the EGR cooler replaced under warranty along with the EGR valve. The "de-rating" issue is gone. Installing Banks PedalMonster got rid of the throttle delay, it's really not turbo lag. Fuel economy, we're getting 20mpg. This past weekend we went out with a friend that has a 5th gen 4runner. We both filled up before we hit the trail. Did about 70 miles round trip. 24 gallons for the 4runner, 18 gallons for my JLU Diesel. When we were done, I used 1/4 tank, let's say 5 gallons, he used 1/2 tank lets call that 12 gallons. Range off-road really shines with the Diesel. As I am writing this, my Jeep is back in the shop for more warranty work. It's getting the Diesel Particulate Filter replaced under warranty. I must say, I do hope the replacement parts last longer than the originals.

My stock JLUR D has serious De rating when I tow. Even got to the point that it was overheating. Arguably it was 112F that day but still couldn't manage going over 40 miles per hour with the heater on full blast and the family sweating our balls off. What do you think your changes did to fix this problem and which ones do you think worked?

I love mine. I purchased a 2021 gladiator ecodiesel in 2021. And I don't have any of the issues you are talking about. It has 37 tires , rack, roofnest tent and awning. In done rubicon with it and many other badge trails. I did get the recall notification, but mine isn't having issues. When I need to go on a obstacles, I put it in 4low, push hill acend or decend switch it in 1st gear and it walks over everything nice and slow. I took one of those jeep jamboree classes and they show you how the vehicle is designed to work smarter 👌. I do acerage 19mpg when totally loaded . Plus I have 4.5 inch metalcloak full lift kit . With drop down brackets. Rides great.

I absolutely love my diesel gladiator. I’m running 4.56 gears and 39” KM3 tires. Ive pulled a 5500lb aero nose box trailer repeatedly with it during desert summers. On grades I use the manual trans selector and I keep it at 55-60mph (like 18 wheelers do) and it doesn’t seem to have ever derated. ive never had a CEL outside one time I under tightened the oil filter. Maybe its because I don’t have a roof or bed rack on it and I have Aluminum bumpers and skids on it? I have a Banks pedal monster which seems to have all but eliminated the turbo lag on and off road but I have always two foot driven to keep any auto trans healthy in rocks. Also my lifetime average at 25000 miles is 21.3 mpg and itll do about 24mpg on 69mph or slower on relatively flat highways. My range in those situations is right about 410miles whereas stock it was ~ 500miles.

In australia we have the 2.2 Diesel. I'm so glad I got one. Every problem you have mentioned, does not happen with the 2.2. Larger fuel tank, uses less DPF, no overheating issues even in far hotter temps, and it's throttle response off road is perfect. It doesnt have the power/torque figures of the 3.0 but it still has plenty of poke. Even fully loaded on a trip it will still get nearly 800kms out of 83 litres and it would appear it's heaps more reliable. Unfortunately jeep stopped putting it in wranglers when the US got the 3.0. Big mistake in my opinion.

Thank you for your honesty. I really wanted a diesel wrangler until I followed channel and discovered the issues you’ve had. I bought a gasser 2021 Rubicon JLU instead. Your content is awesome.

I have a Land Rover Defender 110 with a 300 TDI 4 cylinder Diesel with a 5 speed standard. No def fluid required. So far I have been from the Arctic ocean to the Panama canal. In 46 states and a lot of Canada. I have a (120 L fuel tank and get 15.7 liters / 100 km ) ? Basically 18 miles to a gallon. My rig is heavy roof tent, 2 spare tires. 4” lift, 1 ton portal axles, 37” tires. I am more of an Explorer than a rocker crawler. In 1984 I ran the Paris Dakar rally on a BMW 1000. (highly modified) I did complete the race 2 days behind the winner. 🤷

I’ve got the same jeep with 37s also..the pedal commander solved all the turbo lag problems and completely made the diesel fun to drive. Other than that I agree with everything you said. Great videos!!

You may already have noticed this but I noticed my ecodiesel likes to stay in 2nd when 4LO crawling in drive. When I force first with the +/- I noticed is crawls much better.

You are spot on with your comments about the Ecodiesel. The one thing I wasn't sure about was range offroad with the Ecodiesel versus a gas Wrangler, but it sounds like you have noticed it is the same. I love the idea of a diesel Wrangler and wanted one, but couldn't see any upside to the ownership of one except for the higher torque. This might not be an issue for everyone, but diesel is sometimes harder to find than gas in remote parts of some states.

Walmart sells the jug for $13 in the U.S. You do not have to buy at a gas station as you stated. If you go on a road trip just bring a jug. I fill up with two jugs every 8,000 miles, so no issue for me.

I'm enjoying my diesel Gladiator. Getting 22+ mpg around town. 30+ mpg on a trip. It has never derated, even with 1,200 lbs in the bed. I installed a Banks Pedal monster and Derringer. World of difference in power. It's not turbo lag you are experiencing. It's a lazy gas pedal response.

No, the turbo lag is real. Floor it from a standstill and it takes about 5 seconds before it puts you in the back of your seat.

Thank you for sharing your real world experience with us. I was curious about how well the diesel does in a modified rig like yours. I'm sure it's been a big disappointment, so thanks for keeping it clean and objective.

I own a Wrangler Rubico EcoDiesel. I drive it off-road. I have also driven Wranglers with 707 HP Hellcat engine, with a Corvette engine (mounted by one of the large Tier One suppliers) and with the stock 2.0 L and 3.6 L engines. I believe the 3.0 L Turbo Diesel engine is the best of all engines I drive off-road on the Wranglers: a lot of low-end torque and therefore more control during steep hill climb compared to the Hellcat and the Corvette engines. I have had the same EcoDiesel engine in two Jeep Grand Cherokees before and I love this engine.

Hey Casey I have the Rubicon Gladiator and it has the off-road plus button and it gets rid of all the turbo lag from what I can tell. So far I love my truck/Jeep but I’m concerned about some of the stuff you have mentioned regarding emissions. Keep up the good work with all your videos.

I considered getting the diesel, my buddy is a FCJ service manager, NO was his recommendation. My 3.6 has been great.

Well I can solve a few of those issue - I have a 21 run diesel and have installed banks derringer and pedal monster. DEF RANGE IS AROUND 7500 miles plus. The pedal lag is solved with the pedal monster turn all the way up to track mode and no need to two foot it. Agree with all the other stuff. The funny things is DEF is not necessary - there is a company (Canadian) that has an metallic puck cat that eliminates the need. It will be a future mod for me. And then I want to turn the DEF tank into fuel and the range is back. Like your channel - keep up the good work

Did you re-gear for the bigger rubber? Curious if that played a role in the de-rating issue.

wonder if its a dead pedal issue. I know my colorado didnt want to get up and go till i got it tuned and its a 4 banger turbo diesel.

Curious are you burning oil or have any kind of oil catch catch to keep the intake clean. Curious to see what your intake looks like. A bunch of carbon soot building up everywhere? With the power being down kinda follow a driveability issue then working the flow chart for that.

I’ve noticed the same fuel economy as my gas Gladiator in my Wrangler Ecodiesel. I was hoping for better fuel efficiency. I was curious if you have any tuning done to it Casey

'21 Gladiator Rubi Diesel. Derated only once and never when towing, only 4L climbing slowly out of a steep canyon in 100F temps. Fuel avg 17.3mpg on B20 bio-blend, or 16.8 on dino diesel. 37s, bead locks, no re-gear, bed rack, RTT, bumpers, and winch...pretty heavy rig. I've had a variety of wiring issues, one was a recall, the rest caused by a very flexy suspension traveling further than the wheel speed sensors or locker wiring could handle. Nobody is making longer wiring like they did for the JK, unfortunately, so it's a DIY adventure. Finding replacement parts is a PITA now, I can't imagine when they disco the Diesel, Ram is already done with the EcoDiesel, Jeep won't be far behind. I always learned to offroad two foot and in low powered gas rigs, so manual gear selection and brake loading are not new concepts. Overall, it's a great truck and wheels remarkably well, the length being both a benefit and the rear overhang a limiting factor on drop-offs. I live and wheel near the Rubicon Trail, so your mileage may vary depending on terrain....the overhang and school bus length may never be an issue for you, but it's also a truck and I use it like one on-road.

What does the turbo lag problem do to your transmission?? Can't imafine it's good to be dragging the brakes so much... ..

I love my Eco-Diesel, I have none of these issues, Def is cheap, oil changes are cheap if you buy the mopar oil change package, goes from $356 per oil change to $210. Something tells me you are going to be spending far far more in fuel on the new engine swap your doing. If you delete the emissions mumbo jumbo on these engines, they rip hard and are reliable, at least the 3rd gen eco-diesels are. Plus how many people have 50k to spend on a motor swap... not to mention the price of fuel on a supercharged V8, that is super thirsty, and only drinks premium...hard to compare after the money your going to be spending on your gladiator. No offence but this video seems a bit bias.

I completely agree! Casey will be crying from pump to pump...especially if diesel goes down in price. and If you delete the eco-diesel it gets rid of all the issues...the recall he talks about is also not available for any other cp3 pumps...thats goes for cummins aswell.

As far as your off roading. Put the trans in manual drop down to 1st gear. Mine is awesome. So much torque right away.

Green diesel engineering tunes are the bomb. They will improve everything you have issues with. I've owned six 3L diesels in Audi's, MB, VW, Rams and jeeps. Love them all. The cost of oil changes and the current price of diesel in Canada is ruining the benefits as you have mentioned. Going to miss the Ecodiesel on your channel.

I have a 21' Gladiator Eco w/3.5" lift and 37's, and initially, I had no issues towing a 5500lb camper going up mountain passes etc. Then I had my first limp mode issue. That happened at random a few times then went away. Then months later when I wasn't towing I had a starter fuse that blew, then several trips after (while towing) that starter fuse blew repeatedly. After replacing several parts on several different visits to multiple dealers they found the transmission wiring harness needed replacing because the DEF fluid heats the catalytic converter to 1k degrees and they decided the truck didn't need a heat shielded wiring loom... I've found that others have had similar issues. It was replaced under warranty and I haven't had any issues beyond shoddy workmanship. Also, the replacement part was heat shielded.

I have a similar amount of lift on my JT but with 39s and ive never had any issues. Its the best vehicle ive ever owned

I got my EcoDiesel Gladiator back in October. I was enjoying every little bit of it until I learned about the automatic regeneration of the exhaust system. That sucks, it tells me to drive in constant speed. Which is impossible in city driving. And Murphy's law, it only kicks in when I don't have spare time for a quick detour to the highway nearby so I can drive continuously until the process ends. Have you ever experienced this? My Gladiator is basically a city driver weekdays and highway for weekend.

I test drove an Eco Diesel Gladiator, and I felt this lag that you are talking about, and it is 100% responsible for me buying a gas engine for both of my Jeeps. I only knew about the other problems through your videos. I am sure you won't have ANY of these problems with the Demon!

Its a throttle programming issue not a lag problem. I put a banks pedal monster on mine and its now a neck breaker if I want it to be right off the line on huge tires

@@Casey250 I put one on my 3l diesel Nissan patrol and it doesn’t spool faster but it accelerates way hard from nothing and mine is automatic I think you would be surprised Casey the throttle controllers I have has 3 different modes and 9 different adjustments in each mode

Hey Casey, I figured out that limp mode issue a while ago. The jeep Ecodiesel doesn't like being in the wrong gear on a climb...so what I do now is I just go to manual mode and down shift a gear..it just wants to be on an rpm above 2k when climbing...I've never had the limp mode happen to me since figuring this out. just a FYI.

@@Casey250 sure thing, I feel it is sort of a workaround but I haven't done the towing tests as you did so it is only for regular driving up hills. (I am running 37s with a 3.5-inch Metalcloak lift for reference. stock setups probably do not get this issue I assume)

I have a 2021 Wrangler with the ecodiesel. I bump the tranny into manual mode when doing long climbs (Coquihalla snow shed, Larson hill) and I will run it at 2800-3000 rpm, yet I've still had it D rate the odd time, not every time though. This is not at the moment a deal breaker for me though. I'll re-tune after warranty is over. I bought mine for longevity, at least I'm hoping for 400,000+km on it as I've gotten on every diesel I've owned since 2004 (5 other so far). The issue most likely will be the "clean" components... Now Casey :) I'm sure you're really not worried about fuel economy.... seeing as you'll be lucky to get 20-24 l/100 on the demonator ;) But I know you mention this about the diesel for others. I get a very respectable 8.7-9.2l/100 on highway trips going 110km/hr average and 10.5l/100 with city driving.

I’ve got the 22 gladiator diesel towing 5500 lbs trailer doing 20 mpg and none of the issues. I think the 21 models and newer are better but haven’t modified my jeep. I am thinking of getting another one honestly. There is no brand that offer better combination with torque , fuel efficiency and towing capacity and off road ability. If you don’t like DEF just get the delete kit for everything

I have a 2020 with 27k miles and have the same issues as Casey. My friend has a 2021 and has the same 37” tires, 3” lift etc as me and has never had a check engine light or issue of any kind. So I agree with this comment that the newer models must be improved.

I usually fill my def tank from the pumps at truck stops. Way cheaper and you don’t have any extra to worry about storing.

Tbh the tempermental diesel is still the more appealing option to me at least. Even living on Van island, Afterdriving a diesel glad and a 2.0t wrangler boost is rather nice. I wonder why the Glad eco and gas auto have the same radiator.... With a diesel igniting fuel by the heat of compression running it hot is not really an option. The new hurricane Inline 6 will hopefully come to the actual jeep line. Left foot braking is skill, tbh that many people will never learn.

$30 per 2.5 gallons of DEF? Wally World has it for $10. Oh, btw; Gorgeous Jeep!

You should have mentioned the bunch of problem in winter conditions when def froze And frozen intake sensor that put you in a 10mph limp mode at -30°c

Def may only be a big deal where you are at. Here in va for the “name” brand it’s 22 bucks for 2.5 gallons. But if you live in Texas or Florida or where there is a bucees, they have def on tap like regular gas or diesel. So you can pump the exact amount you need every time without having it go empty per se. If you are going on a long trip you can pump it half way if you already have half. Since it’s in giant tubs underground it’s also cheaper.

Don't forget to, you also bought the first model year with the EcoDiesel engine in the Wrangler. They haven't worked out any of the bugs at that point. Mine is a 2021 and I'm not even included in the fuel pump recall. I understand you have to get in early if you want the views on KZread, but you're asking for trouble too. I waited two and a half years and I don't seem to have any issues whatsoever with my EcoDiesel. I'm also about to tune it this summer so half of the issues you mentioned are about to go out the window. Still love the channel guy, keep up the good work. Sorry for calling you out on the JL forum.

DO IT!!!! LOL, I've actually already done a fair amount of research into it. You're doing a demonade or swap. You could do it Cummins 5.9 l rebuilt engines swap. Cummins sells them from all Jeep dealerships. The trick is you need to make them think you're going to be putting it in a 2006 Ram 2500. That way they sell it to you without any of the emissions stuff on there. I'll tag you in one of the threads on the JL forum I posted quite a bit of information about it on. Definitely worth a look if nothing else. Probably save you quite a bit of money in the process of finding and purchasing a new JLURD.

What size lift and tires are on this Jeep?

Have you tried turning off the Econ button to help performance from a stop? Also, any issues with forced regens and your Jeep telling you to keep driving?

Appreciate your perspective on the turbo diesel issues. Have been sour on turbos for some time because of lag. Most manufacturers are going to multiple, smaller turbos to reduce lag. Wonder of this is an option that Jeep will pursue to help with the off-road issues you mentioned. Turbos also are very sensitive to oil quality- have to keep on top of oil changes or suffer the consequences.

GDE tuning…. OMG… no lag- pulls the torque limits off on the first 5 gears….. it’s nuts once you get it tuned. And I’m talking about a tune that retains the emissions crap.

@@rodgood it wouldn’t- but it helps with the turbo lag. The factory tune cuts torque in the first 4? Or 5 gears…. Part of the tune is allowing full torque. Another big positive for the GDE tune- they basically shut off the egr pickup that is pre-dpf, and only allow for circulation from the egr pickup post dpf- almost no spot getting pumped back into the intake. Def consumption is going to decrease with gears more than the tune. due to increased economy…. Sure the diesel can turn the 37’s on 3.73’s but it’s much happier on 4.88’s for 37’s. Edit- sorry had two comments going and replied to the wrong one. Info still pertains though.

Don't buy it at a gas station, that's key.... $35 CDN is insane for 2.5gallon. Even at the gas station I'm only paying $18, but I buy it as Costco or Sam's Club for $12

Sounds like you're justifying your eventual selling of the Jeep. I bought my EcoDiesel almost two years ago after watching all of your videos, and sure, the engine has its issues, but not to the level of exaggeration as you made it out to be. The "bumping" issue isn't an issue in 90% of the roading you do. I live in SoCal and am on rocks and sand literally everytime I go out. I have never felt like I was underpowered or in a rough spot, turbo lag or not. As for jeep discontinuing the engine, the Ram will still have it, meaning parts will be available. I love your channel, and I love watching your adventures, but like I said, it really seems like you excessively knitpicked issues to make you feel better about selling her. No matter what I will continue to buy Dirty and Dangerous gear, and support the channel. Happy trails Casey.

Appreciate the support 👊 I just want to share my experience. I don't need to justify selling it. I 100% will sell it and move on at some point. Its approaching 3yrs old so itll be time to go soon. Im not sure what I will replace it with but i will probably start planning soon as these projects take a long time to plan. Its been a great Jeep.

I live in BC also, and have a 22 Diesel Gladiator Rubicon. 22k on it already... Ive had to add 2 jugs of DEF the entire 22k and still have at least half a tank of DEF. Been using Air1 fluid for $23 at lordco I dont know why yours is burning it so fast. Havent derated yet and climbed the Coquihala many times when it was 35 degrees or better. I'm on 35's though. $398 for an oil change at the dealer though >_

35k km so far on mine over the last 2.5 years and not a single issue. Never had an overheat issue. DEF fluid need a top up every 10k km. Running 37s on a 3.5" lift too. Sounds like you really dealt with a lemon.

This engine is a common lemon. I had issues too I don’t think his was a lemon. It’s just not a good engine.

I haven't had any issues with mine and I live in a very HOT climate and tow up mountain passes. 37s, heavy beadlocks, and not re-geared....just a tazer to update the tire size in the computer and turn-off that stupid stop/start. I get 6k miles on a 5 gallon tank of DEF, like all diesels they prefer to be worked hard and not a grocery getter.

I don’t recall it being stated in the video that his ECO Diesel is the first model year of the new engine. Seems like a noteworthy caveat in his experiences. Also, the engine will carry on with other models and the parts supply issues apply to all makes and makers. On a related note, having your car stop working because you are out of DEF is absurd - that (along with the current high diesel prices in California - which changes as the wind blows) are the only negatives I have with my 2021. I have none of these other issues and higher mileage on my ECO Diesel - I love it and have a 2021 V6 gaser with a manual too - they both are great!!!

Hi Casey I have a 20 JLU ED much like yours, even the same color. I’ve been doing some reading about derating because it finally happened to me. My recommendation is to get Banks super gauge and really watch your EGT. If it gets too much above 1200F (I think) back off and let her cool. Also FCA detunes the the ED a lot so try the Derringer. You’ll get more power so the engine won’t have to work so hard under load (plus a good opportunity for a product review). Lastly I’m adding active vents in the hood to get the hot air out. I can’t refute your own experience with turbo lag other to say that the ED is at max torque at 1800 rpm which is a lot lower rpm than most gas engines. Also a pedal monster will help with the turbo lag. I agree though that from the factory FCA could have done this better. The tank is undersized, the egr cooler is insufficient, etc

(Def fluid) DEF is cheap $20 bucks, otherwise just delete it and fix any emissions related issues & Plus your fuel milage + 20% - NOT RELEVANT (OIL CHANGES TO EXPENSIVE) Mopar oil change package makes oil changes $145 dollars cheaper per oil change. $210 per oil change, which is standard for diesel's plus they top up DEF for free - NOT RELEVANT (TURBO LAG ISSUE) Pedal commander for the turbo lag issue, gives instant throttle response - NOT RELEVANT (Cp3 high pressure pump recall) Parts shortage's are everywhere for all diesels, including ford and dodge cummins which use the cp3 and cp4 high pressure pumps - NOT RELEVANT ("Parts shortages everywhere") Even for the hemi's and the 3.6L's - NOT RELEVANT (Fuel economy) is great considering it has a small tank! Get a Gen-rite extended range fuel tank, and you'll be going twice as far as your buddys! - NOT RELEVANT (Range) - buy a tuner and increase your range and power by far! - NOT RELEVANT Diesel engine discontinued...Common Casey! Mopar discontinues engines regularly, the only reason the 3.6L minivan engine hasent been discontinued yet is because they use it in everything, dodge journey, chrysler minivan, dodge ram 1500's and even the Pacifica...otherwise it would have been discontinued long ago. - NOT RELEVANT

Yes I couldn't agree with you more! These guys are just pushing the v8 swaps the Epic just started doing...and who the heck has 50+ k to spend on one of these swaps plus the fuel to run premium in a supercharged v8 🤣 . This video makes no sense. Just another marketing ploy.

Ecodiesel owner here. More for the rest of us.

Update..I have a re-occuring issue with my Jeep wrangler ecodiesel {P0191 code} I currently get a check engine light about once a month with this - dealership cannot pinpoint the problem - reset and go. Other than that I love the jeep - I run 37s on stock gears and still average 23 mpg. I tow a 3200 lb travel trailer with ease...Ive never had over heating issues at all. My jeep has 56000 miles on it now and will be trading it in for the Wrangler 392....

I believe the parts are not gonna be a problem to obtain down the road. The reason being is that motor is used in many European vehicles.

DEF delete. Def system causes heat and huge back pressure. Heat and back pressure will definitely shorten your engine life. And so it runs cooler not working to push its exhaust out and better economy. And no derate bullshit.

Are all Diesel Jeeps Eco-friendly design?

I think range, derating, and low speed performance issues could all be drastically improved with changing out your gears. Also you can delete without changing the exhaust at all... just disables the EGR \ DEF system. Sure all of this costs money, but nothing about owning a modified Jeep is inexpensive.

The range with the wrangler rubicon 2.2 diesel here in Europe is 1000 kilometer on 37” tires………🤪💪👍👌✌️🥇

I like diesels. I hope the U.S. Sandia Labs ducted diesel fuel injector research solves the emissions issues. We have Ram 1500 and 2500 diesels. A big problem is gearing. The 3.92 ratio helps the Ecodiesel when larger tires are involved. I would prefer the 4.56 ratio. I currently run 33's, but have considered 34's or 35's. But would regear first. I am toying with the idea of buying a Rubicon Wrangler or Gladiator. The Gladiator only looks right lifted and 37's or larger. 35's are okay though. The dealer will install any ratio I want. But all the Ecodiesel vehicles on their lot have heated seats and steering wheel. Which I do not want. The Ecodiesel has a block heater, that just needs a cord installed. I got the cord for my wife's Cummins engine. And it only takes 10-15 minutes of plug in time for the heater to warm things up at start up. By the way, my Ecodiesel drove much better when I got the Bank's silencer delete kit, and switched to a Flowmaster 50 series HD muffler. Let the engine breathe!

We can all thank the complicated emissions controls for causing the de-rating issue. Diesel vehicles have become so complicated and expensive to own it really doesn't make sense to buy them anymore especially once the warranty is up. It seems like a super charged gas engine is the best option now!

All of the problems you have with the ECO Diesel JL. Can be fixed if you delete the emissions crap and get it tuned properly. There is no turbo lag after it’s been tuned properly. You save money because you don’t have to buy DEF. No more emission problems. Fuel economy goes up due to wait reduction/ you get 1-2 mpg per mile. It drives like a completely different jeep. I can go on an on. If you are not putting a fuel additive in your tank when you fill up your asking for a problem. These high pressure fuel systems need additives. The fuel we us is crap compared to what we had 15+ years ago.

You can detune the "d" rate and DEF. You'll get more horse power and mileage. Also it wont overheat as easy.

I hate it when people make cool stuff and then say I can’t have it anymore.

The DEF consumption is my BIGGEST complaint outside of the current cost of diesel. I'm using almost 1 gallon of DEF per 1000 miles. This is HALF what they advertised.

I would love to see Jeep come out with an engine similar to the new GM 2.7L turbo. I have a Gladiator with the 3.6L, its alright. After 5k miles, I average 15.2 MPG, I thought I would get better. I would love to do a 2.0L swap down the road. I dont tow much of anything, its more of a overlanding truck.

They are releasing a 3.0 Straight 6 with twin turbos called the Hurricane (throwback to the old 4cyc Jeep engine name). The standard output will be 420hp with an optional 520hp High Output. First showing up in the Wagoneers in 2023. If it's reliable, that will be an incredible power plant in a Wrangler.

@@iamblaineful I would not mind having the 3.0TT, but the 2.0L will be easier and cheaper for engine swap, if we can boost the power just a bit, around 325HP and 350-375 TQ. The 2.0L turbo in the Wrangler is also named Hurricane, I would rather have a 4 banger though. I really could care less about over 400 HP.

Hey Casey, almost sounds like once the Demonator is built and tested the ECO might be looking for a new home. Those issues are glaring to say the least, I'm still interested to see what the inline will be like though. I didn't know that they are DC'ing the ECO as well as the 392 .... Maybe they are going back to a single engine again after a few years of trying "options" Regardless always good to hear your input !!!

You noted that you believe Jeep will drop the Diesel from the Gladiator since they confirmed this is the last year for the Diesel in the Wrangler. I disagree, because the Wrangler currently has 5 power train options (2.0L I4, 3.6L V6, 3.0L Diesel, 392 Hemi & the 4xe), so they are reducing complexity for the Wrangler by dropping the Diesel. The Gladiator only has 2 power train options (3.6L V6 & the 3.0L Diesel) and the Diesel option sells well in the Gladiator. I don’t see Jeep dropping it on the Gladiator, until they have other power train options available.

You do know there is technical service bulletin that addresses the DEF ratio.

About 3 or 4 of the things you complained about can be solved with a guy right by you with his tune plus transmission tune and delete. You can full delete or tune and egr shut-off. No Def no turbo lag cause it goes from 23 to 30 with the tune. And the transmission tune helps the shifting. Everything stays on the truck just tuned. Or full egr delete and exhaust delete. Stage 1 (20 or 40hp ) was approx 1500 Do stage 2 (60hp) with about 800 additional cost for exhaust and delete kit I also find better mileage

I have 2021 JLURD. Only have 20K miles so don't travel as much as you but almost 1/2 the miles are off-road/over landing. No de-rate, no overheats (I live in the deep south) and sips DEF. I get 22+mpg with 37's and no re-gear. I find my range when off road is amazing and have never had a range issue even on multi hundred miles of dirt. I think the issue is really individual experience vs overall. I know of 2 392's that have been fully replaced recently - does that make the platform an issue? I think all these engines have their share of problems but overall do not represent the full compliment of the numbers being driven. Is the Diesel perfect...no but I do enjoy it much better than the 3.6. and can't stand the 2.0. (BTW parts must be made for 10 years after the last engine is produced) I completely disagree on the response - maybe because I always two foot. The power has always been more than enough for any obstacle. Not real interested in the demon Gladiator - it's beyond the reach of what most people can ever possibly wheel with (plain 'ol 392 would have been sufficient) - I found your channel before you had the diesel and liked that you were doing what almost anyone with the desire could. Too many channels going down the impossible route for most.

Your experience matches that of my diesel gladiator and im in the desert southwest

Part of the problems with the engine is because it was developed for 50-55cetan diesel and now running with the poor 40cz diesel in Northern America. The derating really doesn't happen over here. And yes the emissions systems are completely bs and doing no good for anything in a vehicle like a wrangler.

What i like about the diesel is that i can make fuel from motor oil and gasoline. Or vegetable oil and antifreeze.

I have a 2014 Grand Cherokee Ecodiesel. This will be my last diesel because the government has basically made it impossible to economically run a light duty diesel for private use. Parts, cost of fuel, additives and competent mechanics. Yeah, get a gasser or electric.

Keep hesitating on pulling trigger on a jeep gladiator deisel or gas I do lots of highway driving and trails up north I'd like the jl but I don't only just explore I hunt also so like idea of the box of the gladiator

Kinda reminds me of Jeep Patriot good vehicle buttt !!! Deep snow well I plowed path dragging bottom and fuel great mpg but it had to cart tank just frustrated. Weak vehicle but that's teens college vehicle. Should bought new JK Rubicon 2 door . Hit a hill smash peddle lol . I think this is doomed to fail project by jeep experiment.

Dude I hear you on the tank location… solid skids are needed for sure. Your consumption seems really high. We go through a 2.5 gallon container once every 2,500 miles (a gallon per 1k miles). This hasn’t been too bad at all… and that’s coming from the perspective of someone who has in the past deleted everything… Also- Canada? Can’t you delete without concern?/legally? Bro….. the cost of diesel right now?? You are throwing a hellcat motor in a gladiator. 🤣😂🤣 The turbo lag… are you regeared?? I understand you can get away with 3.73’s….. But if you are still on stock gears bro, this is why you are having to work the motor more to bump obstacles… regear should help with your power Derating issues as well. Hopefully you are keeping this Jeep…. GDE tuning…. You should look into them.

I'm surprised you didn't mention anything about the high cost of the oil changes. I remember the video you made of the first of your first oil changes. That was a little bit of a dig into the wallet there. Very good video though Casey thank you.

My oil changes are no more expensive than a typical car, but I order oil online along with the filters, I. haven't had a good experience with the Mopar oil, but I do use factory filters.

Stupid Video, The 3rd gen Eco-Diesels are tough! tones of Hotshot drivers with well over 300,000 klms on them! No Pedal Commander for turbo lag? High pressure fuel pumps are in shortage everywhere!?! DELETE THE EMISSIONS!!!!

I dont agree, pedal commander for turbo lag, def is cheap and once the warranty is over deleted it and it changes these engines for the better

We get 26 mpg on our 2020.

Did I hear it right that diesel is more expensive than petrol? The only reason why people drive a diesel is it’s so much cheaper than Petrol in most of the world. Have fun with your monster V8 Jeep

Historically diesel is less expensive in Canada too. It's only been the past 1.5 years or so that it's been close to or higher than petrol. I've owned only diesel vehicles since 2001 and in the Vancouver BC area, this has been my experience. Also, the other reason people buy diesel vehicles is cause the engines will outlast a gas engine by many 1000's of miles. My 04 golf TDI (bought new) I put 445,xxx km on it and it still sold for $3,500 cash in 2015.

@@findmeinariver thanks for your reply, I understand about high mileage with big diesel engines and drove a number of pre-production M.A.N coaches around Europe for a number of years. M.A.N is the home of the first diesel engine in the world (the inventor). But downunder small diesel engines a lucky of they reach high milage out Laster petrol engine. Toyota 2.8 diesel swang grenades, and there was a number of other Japanese diesel engines around 2 L capacity that just always needs rebuilding.
