Worth it? The Truth About RV Dual Pane Windows // Which is Quieter? Single vs Dual Pane Comparison

When I ordered my Jayco Pinnacle fifth wheel I went back and forth on whether I should get the dual pane glass option for the windows. I heard all kinds of mostly hearsay from sales people and the online community. Some were strongly in favor of dual pane windows, but yet others essentially condemned them and were on the opposite side of the spectrum, with one source even citing they are a sham essentially. But, what I found is all the advice and recommendations I read were based on subjective opinions. I couldn't find any data or evidence to back up claims of either those for or against dual pane windows. Well, in the end I pulled the trigger and got the dual pane window option on my Jayco Pinnacle (not to be confused with thermal pane windows which are typically only for houses), and in today's video I'm going to do my best to conduct a real world test and determine whether dual pane windows actually offer noise reduction benefits. In other words, if you have dual pane windows on your RV, will it be quieter inside compared to single pane windows? I'll compared two similar RV's--one with single pane windows and the other with dual pane windows--to determine which, if any, is quieter in the end. I'll use a generator as a noise source, a dB meter to read noise levels, and I'll carefully caclulate factors and controls throughout the experiment to try and get real world, yet objective results in the end. This video is all part of my in-depth series on the Jayco Pinnacle line-up featuring my 2021 Pinnacle 37MDQS. If you haven't seen the full video tour that kicked off the series, be sure to check it out and subscribe!
What do you think? Based on the test results in my experiment, is it worth it to get dual pane windows? Or, do you prefer the regular single pane windows? Let me know what you think in the comments below.

My 2012 Cruiser ViewFinder had dual pane windows. My 2020 Jayco Eagle HT 280RSOK has single windows. The only time I miss the dual pane is when it's raining, otherwise the Jayco has much better ventilation. My Jayco has a huge rear window that I wouldn't have with dual panes.

Fantastic research done here. You might consider contacting a dealership near you (however I have the feeling you may live in an area like ours... out/away/middle of nowhere kind of life style home....), finding identical floor plans, one single and the other double and performing these same type tests. You and I are a lot alike. I love to learn things even at my ripe 53 years of breathing. It completes every day that I do. I think you're the same as I continue to binge watch your videos on this quite lazy day of mine! Your attention to detail is also another one of my OCD traits I have that makes me feel as though we would get along well, all while we might create someone else's insanity or anxiety as we sit and decide what else we might want to spend this kind of time to research! This has made my decision to spend the extra money on the dual pane windows. Thank you again for what you're doing on your page. It's very helpful to myself along with others. I'm going to begin "sharing" these on a page I belong to, to get some information out and get your fan base started for you as well!!!

I think the Pinnacle has R-11 walls, so that does not help matters. We now have a Columbus 1492 with R-11 walls and will be selling to get a DRV with R-16 walls, which include a thermal break. I believe that combination combined with dual pane windows makes more sense for overall insulation, condensation reduction, and noise reduction. I appreciate your take on the dual pane windows.

3db is considered a halfing or doubling of sound energy and is the smallest change most people can notice. That being said, to gain 3db in a sound system it is commonly stated that you would have to double the applied power to achieve 3db increase.

the reason RV Windows fail is because they only have internal seal they don't have the secondary seal because when they expand in the heat and the cold the little joint part open up and then can suck in moisture i have worked for a glass double glazing company for the last 35 years I've never seen anything so stupid and people are correct saying that they can fail vibrating down the road cos it's only relying on the butyl glazing flexistrip {0nly ment to be used on difficult shaped windows ans should always be secondary sealed} holding them together no secondary seal which is crazy for a moving vehicle I've had 2 dual pane Windows fail on my RV because the drain holes got blocked and the primary seal failed with the water we cannot toughened 3 mm glass or do 4 mm spacer at work so end up putting 10.38 laminate in works a better and looks better than ugly looking spacer on small little window sliding windows they are open but as for sound and conversation they make a huge difference my next door neighbor has got the same unit and he's got single glass and there's no comparison between the two a lot quieter and nowhere for the condensation to get in so definitely worth the upgrade for dual pane so if your double glazed windows with single seal which you can tell when you're open them you can only see the spacer with butyl on it make sure you clean the drain holes regularly

Excellent. Thanks for sharing. I really wish I could of found a Northpoint with dual pane, but I'm way too impatient to wait for a custom build. I may try to find my way down to Florida one day where there's a company that will upgrade any unit to dual pane. I think it would be worth the upgrade cost.

So, the single pane glass is 40% louder than the double pane glass in your experiment. That makes a significant difference. Have you noticed a difference in your experience of temperature between your two RV's? I would expect the 33% increase in wall thickness plus the double paned glass makes a big difference.

The biggest difference I've noticed is no condensation on the inside when dew points are extreme. I can't say a night/day difference with temperature based on glass alone and my subjective observations. In some ways my current RV has more overall air volume inside with the extra slides and width, so hard to distinguish subjectively if the walls/glass have made a difference (compared to sealing the underbelly of my RV which has made a huge difference). I think after a year and a half ownership I'd conclude the dual pane glass is a VERY nice option to have, but I wouldn't say it is a must have on my list.
