Agree with the list and would add - Red Oak, Elm, American Sycamore, and anything with excessive spalting.
I used to like the challenge but as I grew older I stopped Thanks Alec

I found Norway Spruce alwful to carve as well. I gave up and threw it in the trash.
Alec, is it reasonable to explain a wood's tendency to split (even quality carving wood like basswood) as a product of growth during shoulder seasons where fiber density transitions from hard to soft (or vice versa)? That seems to make sense to me...

Prova il cirmolo (detto anche pino Cembro). Si lavora bene come il tiglio, ha una bella venatura e un buon profumo. L'unico inconveniente è che puoi trovare dei nodi duri da lavorare.
