WORST Resume MISTAKES To Avoid In 2023 (NEW Resume Template INSIDE!)

YOUR FREE RESUME TEMPLATE + EXAMPLE: heatheraustin.online/resume
Ready to make your resume stand out from the competition? Great! Let's first make sure you're not making these 5 common mistakes:
Mistake #1: Using a career objective instead of a career summary. A career objective tells an employer what you want, rather than how you can help them. Instead, include a career summary at the top of your resume that demonstrates your skills and experience and how they make you the perfect fit for the position.
Mistake #2: Leaving out key sections. Your resume should include your contact information, career summary, work experience, and education. Depending on your career level, you may also want to include a career highlights section, core competency section, or technical skills section.
Mistake #3: Including your full mailing address. Your contact information should include your name, phone number, email address, and LinkedIn profile, but not your full mailing address. This is unnecessary and could potentially expose you to privacy and unconscious bias issues. Instead, just include your general location (e.g. city and state).
Mistake #4: Focusing on job duties rather than accomplishments. While it's important to list your job duties on your resume, you should also highlight your achievements and the results you've achieved. Use metrics like numbers, data, percentages, and time to show the impact of your work.
Mistake #5: Using the wrong font or layout. Your resume should be easy to read and visually appealing. Choose a professional font and be consistent with your formatting. Avoid using fancy or decorative elements that may distract from the content of your resume.
By avoiding these mistakes, you'll set yourself apart from the competition and increase your chances of landing your dream job. Watch this video for deep dive into each mistake and how to fix it.

I’m helping my friend now with a résumé, and I can tell you as a civilian myself I found the whole process of trying to help him bring everything into the résumé was a little intimidating. I love what you said about not really summarizing your career description, but point out your highlights. So the question I have for you is, how many pages was your résumé when you were finally done? I find that trying to condense his stuff. I feel like I’m taking away all the important parts, or the aspects of what he did. But I can tell you this is been a fun ride. He has or months until retirement and we’re only on day one.

What if you worked mostly in retail and have little accomplishments? That’s my resume struggle. Like how do you make years of retail experience look good? My resume consists of a cringe “career statement or cover letter” Core Competencies and then it’s job duties. I could put my linkedIn but again I feel it’s for more accomplished people in their careers. I struggle with my resume and things like LinkedIn because I lack or I feel I lack accomplishments. Though I know I contributed to the companies I worked at. 😞

Thanks for sharing great info. Question - you mentioned not including your full address for one, to avoid unconscious bias. What do you think about the detailed ethnicity and disability question that every employer seems to ask on their applications these days? It is positioned as to show their diversity and nondiscrimination efforts. But it just comes off feeling boxed in and judged. And if a person chooses not to answer, which is always an option it almost seems pointless because there is the unstated assumption that a person has a disability or minority if they don’t answer.

Great question! In general, employers are not allowed to ask about disabilities on a job application. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits employers from asking about an applicant's disability before a job offer is made. There are some exceptions to this. For example, an employer is allowed to ask about an applicant's ability to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation. I hope helps! Let me know if you need further clarification.

  • @ShunReads

@@ProfessorHeatherAustin wow well that perplexes me even more because in recent applications (almost all) at the end there is the usual disclaimer statement about equal opportunity and diversity. Then there is this question that ask if you identify as a person with a disability. They list a whole bunch of symptoms that are examples of a disability (from clinical depression, ptsd, learning disabilities, autoimmune and heart disease) just to name a few. Then they ask if you identify. It’s multiple choice giving you the option to say (yes, no, prefer not to say, etc.). The other question is what race do you identify as…. I just don’t see how these questions are fair and even relevant.

@@ProfessorHeatherAustin Apparently a lot of employers these days think the laws don't apply to them and asides from all the disability and race questions, have the gall to ask how people identify, what their sexual persuasion is as though it has anything whatsoever to do with one's ability to do the job, all in the name of DEI, diversity, equity and inclusion. Were they not so blatantly discriminating against people, they'd have no reason whatsoever to ask such questions. Don't believe me, go and apply for a job with GoFundMe as one example and see the questions applicants are asked. They and others deserve to get sued for this abomination.

What happens if the metrics work against you for making your career portfolio Look too small or too big for example if you use finance if you say you work for an organisation work 30,000 as apposed to organisation worth 3 million pounds

  • @ProfessorHeatherAustin

Great question Andrea! When including metrics in your career portfolio, it's important to use accurate and relevant information that accurately reflects your experience and achievements. Be transparent about the size and scale of the organization you worked for, avoid exaggerating your experience, and focus on highlighting relevant experience and qualifications. Remember that metrics are just one aspect of your career portfolio and should be used in conjunction with other information such as job responsibilities, accomplishments and skills.
