@Drew, in Poland we have voivodeships which is almost the same as your "states". Each voivodeship has it's own capital, each one has it's own arms and many have other culture. I think that the thing that differs voivodeships and states is that states mostly have their own law when we have only one for the whole country.

*7:42** It actually takes 3 hours to get to Brittany not 5, you're forgetting all the eastern part of Brittany and its capital Rennes (where I live) and you can pretty much see it takes 3h30 to go from Paris to Rennes (and only 3 hours to the eastern limit of Brittany)* and no it doesn't take traffic into account ^^. Why it takes so long it's because highways in Brittany are not limited to 130kph but 110. But there's also no toll contrary to most of others French highways :P

About "abandoned" railways. It's quite easy - in 19th and 20th century a lot of big factories had some kind of railway really nearby to transport their products. Now we have trucks and highways. And almost no production :) These lines are just useless.

In the 1950s, Dr Beeching was tasked with trying to save the government some money by modernising British Railways. Part of his plan was to reduce the number of small lines that didn't earn much revanue. This led to the closure of many branch lines and smaller networks, which remain abandoned or un preserved to this day.

In Lübeck in Germany, there is a little street called Fegefeuer, which means "purgatory". It got that name because it's a shortcut from the main street to the bishop's church, were people would run to request sanctuary from the law. If you made it through Purgatory, you make it to Heaven. When I was working in a nursing home for a year, one of the old ladies with dementia said she needs to get on the bus back to purgatory. Fortunately I knew that that's the street where she used to live. Would have really confused the non-local caretakers.

5:25 The north/south divide in the UK is honestly astonishing, the north is deprived of any resources while the south hoards disproportionate amounts.

Disappointment Island is named after the fact that an explorer was looking for Iceland, because of how beautiful he had heard it was, but when they got to what he thought was Iceland, he realised it wasn’t Iceland at all.
