As a lifelong Philadelphia sports fan, this collapse is nothing new. The Phils have two World Series championships in 140 years as a franchise.... Eagles have one Super Bowl ring... Sixers haven’t won since 1983.... Flyers since 1975. Let’s face it, choking is as natural to us as behaving like drunken nitwits when we do win. Getting so emotionally wrapped up in your professional sports teams success or failure is exhausting and detrimental to your mental health. It took getting to senior citizen status for me to realize it. Expect the disaster.... it won’t hurt as much when it comes.

Really? Try being a Mets, Jets, Rangers, Knicks fan. 6 titles in the 58 years I've followed them. 232 chances. Last years of championships...Mets 1986, Jets 1969, Knicks 1973, Rangers 1994. The Mets, Knicks have but 2 in their history, Jets 1, Rangers 4 in 95 years.

As a Dbacks fan, I can say I have never seen such a fanatical fan base. When reporters were getting feedback after the Philly loss, you could see they had basically lost their minds. Screaming their disappointment and anger at Philly for losing a game every one around the world expected them to win.

Yes, that was a big one, but I recall the 2011-12 Canucks who won the President's trophy and went on to almost get swept and ultimately knocked out in the 1st round by the 8th seeded LA Kings, who went on to win the Stanley Cup. Playoff chaos also exists in hockey.

There were a lot of moving parts and reasons why they lost. 1. They were gassed. They had to work so much harder to not only make the postseason but be the third seed. They, also, had to work hard to make it deep in the postseason. You can tell that there was just no energy. 2. Managing. I like Rob, but he managed this season poorly. Leaving in guys that should’ve been taken out and taking out guys that should’ve been left in. Sanchez and Walker hadn’t pitched for 20-something days. We should’ve had them relief so they would be warmed up to start a game, but no. We did the same thing we did last season and pitched the same people and they got exhausted. Not using a 4th pitcher may have worked in the wildcard series and the NLDS, but this was the NLCS. 3. They were cocky. Going into game 3, you could tell that they didn’t have batting practice. I understand that going into that game they had the advantage of being up 2-0, but they were so cocky to think they didn’t need batting practice, and they came out completely flat. 4. Only trying to hit homeruns. After the first two games, you can tell that the hitters were trying so hard to hit homeruns, but they hadn’t gotten on base or scored more than 1 run. They should’ve been trying to get on base more than anything and they wasted AB’s to do this. 5. There was no urgency. This has been something I had seen all season long. Much like last year, the team started the season off poorly, but by the end of May and beginning of June, they found their groove and started making their way up the standings in their division. But when they lost I had heard Rob basically say “We lost. It’s okay. We can win another one.” That always annoyed me bc he had said this a lot throughout the season, and when it was starting to get to the end of the season, it shouldn’t have been the same speech. There should have been some aggravation and not this nonchalant attitude about winning games. Heck, if they did have any urgency, they would’ve have had to work so hard during the second half of the season. Now, in the last few games, there was just no fight. They didn’t play like it was the last time. They treated the last game like it was game 3. 6. Hitting in men on base. This is a problem they have had for five or six seasons now. When men are second and third and there’s one out, they can’t score the run or manage to score only 1 and the innings over. They don’t do as much damage to the other team as they’re capable of. They waste opportunities at the plate, which adds up. 7. Pitching. When the Bailey Falter experiment failed, we needed another pitcher. We also needed more men in the bullpen. Even after last season, our bullpen wasn’t perfect. But this year we had guys like Soto, Marte, and Covey, who were just awful. Marte went 1-1 with a 5.08 ERA and a 1.63 WHIP in 40 games. Playing in 69 games, Soto had a 4.62 ERA with a 3-4 record and only 3 saves. Despite having a 1.93 ERA since August, Covey had came in the middle of the season with a 6-30 record. In the month of June, Covey had a 5.68 ERA with hitters hitting .338 against him in May and June. We didn’t need a work-in-progress reliever. We needed someone who could get the job done. Going back to our starting pitching, we needed more relievers. We could’ve put Walker or Sanchez in the bullpen to strengthen it if they had gotten another reliever. Despite the praise, in only 19 games, Sanchez had a record of 3-5. While a game or two may have been from a flat offense, Sanchez typically gave up a minimum of 2 runs almost every start. Every time he pitched we had to expect the offense to score at 3 runs. Sometimes it was even more and we lost those games. Maybe he’ll be even better in 2024, but he wasn’t great this season. Aaron Nola’s inconsistency didn’t help either. He either had a good game and gave up only a run or he had a bad game where he gave up 4 runs. He could never have a two good games in a row. Despite his the year he was nominated for a CY-Young, he hasn’t gotten better. He’s only gotten worse. Since 2019, his ERA has gotten higher. With a 12-9 record, Nola had a 4.46 ERA, giving up 32 homeruns (7th highest in the MLB and 3rd in the NL) and 105 runs (6th highest in the MLB and 3rd in the NL). Although, he was ranked 73rd in walks with 45 and 14th with 202 strikeouts, you never knew what you were going to get out of him. And lastly, there was Lorenzen. Despite having a great start in Miami and throwing a no-hitter against the Nationals in his second start, he just collapsed after that. After given 8 days of rest, Lorenzen came back. He posted a 9.23 ERA in 6 appearances since his No-hitter on August 9th. In 26 1/3 innings, he allowed 40 hits, 30 runs (27 earned), 14 walks, and only 14 strikeouts. 8. Pitching staff. Now, while I had given Nola and Lorenzen are hard time, we might have to consider that the pitching staff could be a problem as well. Like I said, since 2018, Nola hasn’t gotten any better. We have seen former players like Eflin and Gibson leave Philly and improve. While they might not be CY-Young contenders, we can see that since they left they have grown from the players they were for the Phillies. Much like Nola, even Wherler, despite how great he’s been, he hasn’t gotten better. His improvement has been stagnant more or less. Next season we need a better bullpen. Soto and Marte didn’t work out. We should also consider a new pitching staff.

Rob Thomson is NLDS was great But his managing in NLCS is atrocious He refueses to change the batting order despite we've been struggling since game 3 Diamondbacks could pitch wide against Schwarber, Tuerner and Harper because Bohm and Stott's slump Against our most dangerous first 3 batters, they could basically walk them and target Bohm and Stott for the outs And the timming of pitching change in NLCS is also really bad In game 3, when we were up by only 1 point in 7th, instead of using Alverado, Thomson used a rookie Orion Kerkring In that high stake situation, you'll want someone experienced on the mound Then Kerkring didn't get any out and give three base runners and one game-tying earned run Only then Thomson used Alverado Alverado immediately got 3 outs swiftly without giving up more runs And in Game 4, Kimbrel had already given up game tying homer At this point we were still tied up at 5:5 Instead of pitching change immediately, Thomson only pulled in Dominguez after Kimbrel gave up two more base runners Then one hit, we're going into the 9th 5:6 The most inexcusable is game 7's batting order, and timing of pitching change throughout entire series Thmoson refused to make any change despite we were clearly struggling going into game 7 Thomson's often change pitchers when the damages had already been done

I was looking for a 1964 or 2011 reality check, which were way worse than this. The '64 team had that massive end of season collapse. My grandfather didn't get over that until the WS in 1980. Overall, it was the worst collapse. The 2011 was worst playoff series loss. The team with the famous "4 Aces". The Cards intentionally walking Utley to load the bases to strike out Ryan Howard, who went 1-16 that series. The series ended with Howard tearing his achillies.

The fat lady started singing in game 3. This is when the Sillies did a 180 degree about face in the other direction. This was the year to do it if they were going to make a run at it. Many of these players are older and the Braves are younger with loaded talent. The Phillies neglected their farm system while spending 100's of millions on overpaid charlatans like Turner, Schwarber, Harper, and Castellanos. All are in their thirties and may be coming towards the end of their careers. Castellanos reverted back to his old self as he usually does and absolutely did nothing at the plate. The future doesn't look good. I doubt this team is a contender for maybe 10 to 15 years. This reminds me of the 1983 and 1993 Phillies. Bringing in high players only to lose in the WS and being bad for 10 and 15 years.

@wingding6758 I see but it seems that there's a disadvantage for teams with 1st round byes. In the last 2 seasons with this new playoff structure, teams with 1st round byes are 3 for 8 in advancing from their initial rounds. Players are complaining that the 5 game rest is too long (mostly hitters). Power teams with all-star, mvp candidates and 100+ wins are coming up empty while teams with no rest are dominating. I mean if I were a fan of a team like the latter I would be super stoked we're making a Cinderella playoff run, all I had to do was endure an entire 162 game season of above avg baseball. Pretty awful to see your 100+ win team fizzle out completely when it matters most. It's getting to a point where you WANT your team to be above avg and NOT nab a 1st round bye because so far stats show a disadvantage for them (however it is pretty early to determine). Yes, I know, MONEY, but wouldn't a WS with say, Hou vs LA, or Bal vs Atl get better ratings? As for me and many others, we're not really stoked about Tex vs AZ to be honest.

Offense completely disappearing, at home, for multiple games. Philadelphia's 4 sports teams are a combined 8 - 24 in championship series, meaning WS, SB, Stanley Cup, and NBA finals. One of those NBA finals doesn't even really count because it was before the team moved from Syracuse to Philly. Thats a .250 win percentage. FUCKING GARBAGE. Sorry Phillies. You need to learn to play small ball. Walks, base hits, stolen bases and bunting to advance runners. The big guys need to shorten their swing and learn from Alvarez. He never strikes out and he is better than any player you have. Good pitchers beat good hitters. A 360 foot homerun counts as much as a 460 foot homerun. Once the Rangers learned that lesson they started to handle Houston pitching and won.

Castellanos can stop putting the ring finger up and maybe start hitting. Trea and Harper had great playoffs but it means nothing when you lose like this. Why not pinch hit Rojas with bases loaded? I mean put a recovering Hoskins out there or something. Anyone but Rojas - I get his defense is good but my goodness nobody died when Pache was out there for a couple of innings. And why did the commentators keep bringing up the Phils "dominant" bullpen? My goodness they're bad. Great job by the Dbacks for playing small ball and fighting through each and everything. They deserve everything they're getting. Just a great team all around. I'm excited for a couple newer teams in the WS with Rangers and Arizona. Looking forward to a great and entertaining series.

@@WilliamBeaver-tb9nt I said nothing about the series being unfair. The DBacks won fair and square by taking advantage of the Phillies’ mistakes. The primary mistake the Phillies made was by overlooking the DBacks. They lacked focus, discipline, and intensity. They gave up. Nothing unfair.

It's ironic the same thing that happened to the Braves happened to Philly. Maybe teams should be the underdog.

Hopefully no Diamondback fans got beat up after the game.
