You did not correct this behavior. I am 💯 certain. First, you are pushing the dog down which goes right into a dogs natural instinct of opposition reflex. You push away they want to come back! Not a good technique. Teach the dog what off means first by holding the dogs paws when he jumps up until the dog struggles to get away. Release the paws and say “off”. Promote the dog to come back up and repeat process until dog hesitates to come up after several reps. When dog hesitates to jump up after being lured reward with praise on ground. The dog learns that getting stuck in that position is not fun because they can no longer leave on their own terms. After a solid week of teaching the word off a correction becomes fair grounds for introducing a negative reinforcer to the behavior. Try that not what you are doing!

When it comes to owning any animal you need to learn when YOUR behaviour is the issue, allowing your pets to walk all over you will make the whole thing 3 times as hard! I thought my partners staffie was a terror, turns out I am the issue because I let him push me over because I think it’s cute then he jumps or tried to eat my face (with love!). Once I started actually listening to my parter about how to handle his dog it got so much easier! It’s almost never the dog, it’s the owner! Remember your behaviour will be copied by your animals just like children 😅

Yes I now know it’s totally me after owning dogs my entire life and they’ve almost all been reactive on walks and just not dog friendly other than with each other but my last one just passed and I rescued a new one from the shelter & she was so well mannered & dog friendly the first few weeks then I brought her back to the shelter for heart worm treatment & she attacked a dog in the waiting room & went for a cat. Luckily she was on leash so I got her before anyone got hurt but I was in shock cause she was so friendly before that. I still have no idea what I did to cause it but know it’s me cause when my boyfriend or sister has her on walks he won’t even bark at other dogs or humans but if I do she is going all out in protect m/attack mode. Is it cause she doesn’t feel secure with me? She needs to protect me? She doesn’t know I’m the leader? I think I just answered my own question. Lol

My Staffy jumps too. Most of all when he got some stress from another people. I adopted him one year ago tomorrow. He's abused and they always put him in a small cage. He was only 1,5 years old and I'm his fourth owner. He is an amazing dog I love him so much. He's my big baby boy. He's always happy. I really don't understand why people this dog doesn't like because he is doing so well here with me. He lay on the bed on the couch and have a lot of toys and a hundred balls I think 😂

That's what I ran into. Mine is 12 months and the previous owner kept him in a crate because of his behavior and lack of training. I'm struggling with jumping and leash pulling but we're working on it. Hopefully these lessons help. He's spent his first days in my home OUT of the crate completely and is now going into it when he wants to and knows he's free to come and go which has calmed him down quite a lot.

I strongly agree .. No such thing as a bad puppy just terrible owners .

When adopting a dog you really need a lot of PATIENCE! it takes time for a dog to get adjusted and learn these new rules that they probably never had before. We adopted a dog that was in and out of the shelter twice. He’s a lot of work but how I love him 😍 he’s only 8months half Dalmatian and Labrador

Our rescue is a mutt but I see sooo much of her in this pup. Terribly sad that such loving, happy go lucky, eager pups could get put down just because they naturally express their love and excitement so much. Ours is trained thanks to an amazing foster who had her before us and we continued the training. But it's always at least a little bit of a struggle trying really hard to be a good girl and just giving us all the love and joy she has. Staffies are truly the best

Aren’t they!? Mine whom I need to retrain thanks to my not knowing how and breaking her of all her manners but she is the best lil snuggle hug always happy and tap dancing while sitting with a big ole smile on her face. Just so happy! She just runs around with her toy by herself and it’s the cutest thing ever. I wish they didn’t have such a bad rep.

You are inspirational man.

I work at a shelter and there's this huge pit mix. He is visibily 80+ pounds of solid muscle. He would jump, hump(to the point of leaving bruises), pull and even get a hold off people's sleeves. He destroyed at least 3 blankets and five towels. He has knocked people over. So a training plan was put in place. He now sits on command, rarely jumps or pulls, and no longer humps or bites sleeves. It's amazing what consistency and training can do.

I currently have a staffy and he spent most of his first year in a crate due to his energy level and lack of training from the previous owner. 3 days in a new home with me he's drastically calmed down and become less anxious, but I have serious issues with leashes and jumping on people. I hope your training lessons help. He's not done growing and I'm concerned about his wanting to run at and jump on strangers.

Will first of all I love your videos! Your opinions on different breeds and behaviours and approach to choosing the right breed have helped me a lot in choosing the right dog for my girlfriend and I. We now have a laekenois shepherd puppy of 5 months old, and since we've got him at 8 weeks old he's been fenomenal in every way except one: Each time a new person enters the house (could be me or my gf as well) he approaches very submissively (ears and tail low and bent down belly almost touching the ground) and then urinates a little bit... The weird thing is it doesn't look like he's scared because even though it's low, his tail is wagging and he chooses to approach. We've tried ignoring him when entering until he's calmed down a bit, but he then still urinates once we direct our attention to him. I'd love to hear your take on why he displays this behaviour and how we can help him feel more confident when someone walks in. Thanks in advance! Great video. I've got to 11 month old blue staffs two brothers. Phoenix is also good so easy to train he just gets it. But Griffin is a bit to much excited and needs more work especially when he meets other dogs and people a lot of jumping and mouthing so I'm going to try this video on him.

I work in a no- kill shelter. Martingales to easy walks. I’m really appreciative of the slip lead since watching you and Cesar. Most of what I deal with are 50-65 lb pit mixes, bowling ball heads, bigger than your English variety

Shelter dogs have a tough time controlling energy: they seldom get the exercise or the attention needed. I spent more than 5 years doing volunteer transport (transporting dogs out of kill shelter to foster/no-kill shelters). In addition to the attention/exercise issue, these dogs. Many may not realize that these dogs don't get much quiet. As soon as they get in a moving car they would relax and sleep. I was always amazed at how trusting these dogs despite some of their tragic backgrounds. Very rewarding volunteer work and easy for most to do. For those who have an interest in particularly breeds, there is generally a "rescue" for your dog breed. Very easy to get involved in volunteer transport to help get dogs from point A to point B (shelter to foster or to a forever home). The dogs that I worked with came out of Kinston, NC and went as far as Maine in a weekend. Also, I worked with the English Setter rescue....and these dogs originated from all over...traveling hundreds of miles as an eager trusting passenger.

My boxer jumps a lot too, so this video was useful. Will, thanks for everything you do for these dogs. I hope you and your family have a great new year.

My boy was like this, and still does when he's dad acts hyper soon as he tells him no he gets down and sit and waits! Love staffies there litersly toodlers just persistence is key! Mine won't even treat train hates it. Praise all the way. He does the hand nibble to only on my partner now but didn't take long just took routine of knowing what's okay and what's not!! I want a rescue staffy but my son is to young for most witch is a shame

I sure wish I had you to help my pittbull! I'm 110 lbs hes almost 70 and no matter how hard I try He gets up and scratches and. Nearly knocks me over💙 I rescued him from euthanizing...but never even imagined I could not handel him! Now idk what's going to happen...you make it seem easy! Love your channels mate and love the content... suggestion: less of the Decca-Communication sales and presenting arms waving everywhere ... it's kinda of putting... its works in America but for the UK not so much. 👍

As a trainer, I can officially say I prefer working with severe aggression cases than severe jumping or anxiety cases, the jumpers tend to mess you up more than the ones with aggression issues! Gotta be prepared for anything in this field of work,

you have to be totally and utterly prepared for this breed... we have a staffordshire/pit mix female as well as 6 yorkie males... she's 45 pounds, they're about 40 pounds in total... she's been great with other dogs forever, as long as they're around 20 pounds to 150 pounds... no issues. however, she's bred to hunt things smaller than her, and that's what she's been doing... last week went after them, one at a time in rapid succession right in front of us and almost killed one - 5 punctures in head, neck, throat, chest... shook him violently and slammed him onto the ground here in Flagstaff, Arizona. Wish we could find a home for her where she'd receive lots of love and attention and energy. Otherwise, they're very strong, very energetic, very loyal, very loving.... she's currently at a 2 week intensive training in Sedona Arizona with TopLineK9... we'll see if this changes things... if not, she's got to be muzzled at home and always separated from the others, or re-homed. She's gorgeous, beautiful, and we love her... but this is a difficult situation.... she really deserves to be around another dog that is a match against her, for sure... and that she can socialize with - it's only fair for her...

Awe sorry to hear this. And just wanted to get an update? My staffy is about 50 lbs & so strong that she does tend to hurt my 25lb other dog when playing. He’s older and has a gimp paw so can’t really rough house. I always say she would be great with a dog closer to her size & age that she could chase & rough house with and burn that energy off. She hasn’t tried to attack mine but if he were any smaller I could see it happening. She just killed a squirrel in my backyard today. :(

I've owned a few different Staffs one American Staff and 3 BullyxStaffs they all needed attention and they are velcro dogs. They are also very hyper and need lots of exercise. I would run with my dogs and get them tired before going home. Then after about 3 hour nap they were ready for the nightly run.

When in doubt, get a staffy. Love it! I have 2🤣 actually surprised they havent made your list for best guard dogs for first time owners. They're on the smaller side but pound for pound would be one of the strongest dogs.

I always thought my girl would be a terrible guard dog because she loves humans so much and is generally a calm well mannered dog. But she is very close to me, so would be interested to know her response if someone went for me...

I love the breed. I've owned and APBT for 10 years, great breed when socialized and trained properly, and of course lots of exercise. Socialization is key to any powerful breed in my opinion.

@@bethgill9297 yes I am aware, I was saying I also have a terrier, did not mean they were the same.

I can control my staffy when she is jumping at me using these techniques and she's very responsive. The problem is if we go out for a walk and she gets close enough to other people or when people come to visit she just goes absolutely mental and nothing I do do apart from restraining her will stop her from jumping up at them. It's awful because I want to let her off the lead but I can't at the moment.

She's definitely getting better but she will still jump at people especially if they show any interest in her 🤣 I had her on a harness for ages but I actually find that just encourages her to pull so I've switched to a slip lead which she seems to be ok with. Other issues include jumping onto me whilst I'm on the sofa, face licking and just an overall lack of respect really 🙈🤣

@@EddieFelson88 what I did with my now late amstaff was I just redirected this behaviour into something more acceptable. Maybe not the best thing to do, but when he wanted to start jumping, I told him no and immidiately offered him a toy or slippers instead. Much like you get a puppy not to bite people's fingers:)They can get so excited they just need to get this energy out somehow at such moments, I guess- and he learned to redirect it into finding, bringing or just carrying around a toy or slippers and showing it to the guests, it was super adorable :D Also, it helps a lot if the dog is crate-trained, so for some guests,. I'd tell him to go into his crate instead of running straight to the door and he listened, I locked him in for about 4 minutes so he could calm down just a bit, he could see and hear the people already and then he didn't feel the need to jump to greet the guests any longer. It also helps if they try to ignore him (turn away and don't make eye contact) when he wants to be too jumpy etc.

Yes I would like to hear the answer also , I think it is that you have to train the people you know how to address it , and with strangers , if you can catch the dog the second before he does the behavior and correct it there that is best , also do this with people who are not trainable , because ultimately you are the leader and the dog must do what You say 🐕 😉

I saw a few tok toks where people gave their staffys a stick type toy or just a favorite toy when someone came over and just holding the stick helped them not jump somehow and then could get all the pets without jumping. Adorable too but did not work with mine. Mine sits to start out with sometime but just cannot contain her excitement with visitors and jumps and tried to lick their faces. She’s so love able and cute but so worried an elder will get knocked down or something. I’ll keep trying.

I have an 8 month patterdale find recall hard never runs to far comes back stays with me but don't want the collar back on treatd toys dont work hes clever tuns it into a game lots of energy

How would i achieve this with a bigger dog, like a German shepherd… (pushing him off is a bit harder since he is big and quite strong)?

Now, how would you do that without leadpressure with a slip lead?

My staffie was a really crazy, excitable dog who was constantly jumping up in my face (and strangers) and would snap. I was told she was 12 wks when I bought her but the vet said she hadn’t even been weened. Puppy/older dog training classes told me she had issues. On the long lead she was great with recall but seemed to know as soon as I let go and would literally run as fast as she could over to strangers and jump up snapping in their faces. I needed help as I knew I was obviously doing things wrong. I also have an autistic son who at that time would get the dog so over excited making it harder. I paid 2 private trainers - one gave me a coke can filled with rice to throw at her and sold me a leather lead. The other one told me to buy a prong, told me she was anxious and left after an hour and me £250 down. I was at the end of my tether and even thought of giving her up but I couldn’t. One day she ran up to me full pelt jumping towards my face so I lifted my knee up which caught her chest and she went flying backwards - she never ever did that again. I watched hours upon hours of training videos and she is a lovely well behaved dog who’s now an old lady. She looks at me for everything to check if what she is doing is ok and is a wonderful dog.

We have a GSD puppy who on walks will get over stimulated and will jump up constantly and bite your clothes / hair / skin anything. We’ve tried changing directions / walking into him to change direction / ignoring him and putting our backs to him / distract with treats or his ball / telling him any other command like sit or down and nothing is working !! It’s gotten to the point where we can’t walk on main roads in fear of him jumping into the road etc and have to wear old clothes and have our hair up as he’s ruined our clothes by ripping them with his teeth when he jumps up and bites. He’s in puppy training and doing really well in it and we’re on the waiting list for 1:1 training but it isn’t til the end of March and we feel at our wits end. Is there any suggestions you have for us please? It would be really appreciated 😩

This is the kind of dog I'm looking for. One that takes a lot of work, a lot of skill, and a lot of patience to get to the level of my Malinois mutt. As a starting dog trainer I feel I got off easy with her, so I need one that's absolutely terrible behavior-wise.

I’m helping a Malanois mix foster, and she’s been difficult to find a home for. She’s so energetic and not trained, so she jumps a lot, and is reactive on the leash. But she’s only 2 and very sweet. I have no idea how to train her, so any tips would be good. She was thrown from a moving vehicle and who saw it someone picked her up.

Hi. I am thinking of getting a staffing. She is 4 years old and has had zero training and won't even sit down! She has a good character. I am experienced as a dog owner and can lead but I am apprehensive about taking her on. She is very independent and indomitable although just on one walk she recognizes me as the leader due to my consistency and awareness.. I intend to try to train the dog further using rewards and a training lead. In your opinion, is it possible for me to train this dog when she is so independent? I have an 8 month old Staffy and his very good toilet trained within a few days and goes into his bed no problem and gets exercised a few times a day for around 40 mins at a time but he just wants to jump up all the time and I’ve tried the slip lead and praise him for four on the floor but he still is jumping a lot any help would be greatly appreciated

How do you correct this with a puppy and off leash running around I do this same thing off leash and it makes it worse I turn my back to him and he jumps on my back , I have toys etc for him and nothing works when he becomes in zoomies that's when it becomes I call [Demon time] jumping biting hanging from clothes , I've done everything even with treats and nothing works this has happened since I brought him home and he started to develope etc. Anyone have any suggestions??? I even did my research on him before I got him to know what I was getting myself into and I knew and when it started I tried everything to correct what internet stated and nothing it makes him even crazier!

There such cuddle buddy's. I love all dogs but staffordshire terrier mastiff and great dane and loads of big dogs are my favorite.
