Recently diagnosed Type 2, my endocrinologist prescribed Farxiga rather than Metformin due to my age (67), cardiac and kidney function issues. It pulls sugar out rhrough your urine. My cardiologist and nephrologist were thrilled due to it assisting cardiac and kidney. They suggested adding Ozempic short term due to similar benefits. Insurance copays were cost prohibitive but my endocrinologist was able to refer to a grant plan that allows me to take that I can afford. I went on a diabetic diet of 1400 calories a day and have lost 40 lbs in 8 months. My A1C is back to pre-diabetic numbers, I feel better, have energy again. Finding the right med for your situation is critical. But I wouldn't have known that and other if I hadn't found Sugar MD and began self education. He is absolutely a God send to all with diabetes or caring for a parent with T2D. After learning the mechanism of this drug (Glipizide) he was taking, I told his dr. to take him off and he agreed it will worsen his condition without hesitation he removed it. He then saw another dr. (pcp in same office) who placed him back on as I did not accompany him to this apt. He soon afterwards had a scary acute pancreatitis attack. (he was on metformin and jardiance while on glipizide. Metformin is the only diabetic med he is on now, but I'm wondering if maybe he will do best on jardiance alone, as you? thanks for sharing. So glad you have found what works best for you!

Wow. What a timely video. I've been weining myself off of Metformin and Glipizide. I was taking 1,000 mg of metformin twice a day and 10 mg of glipizide twice a day. For the last 2 months or so I was able to cut it down to once a day and my fasting glucose has been testing between 50 at the low end and 76 at the high end. Yesterday I didn't take either medication and my fasting blood sugar this morning was 128. I was able to make changes, due to a change in my diet. I'm eating mostly plant base/vegan now, and I cut out sweets. I will be looking into a natural Metformin replacement supplement for if I cheat on my diet.

Have you ever prescribed semglee for your patients? My insurance company wants me to take that instead of Lantus which has worked well for me for some time. I believe it is a cost issue. What are your thoughts?

Wish you had been around 20 yrs ago maybe my first husband would still be living He was taking 3 slow acting 2 fast acting shots of Insulin metformin glipiziide metformin and acts. Plus he he diabetic neuropathy and it went from his feet all the way to his hips. This month makes 14 years he has been gone. He was 51 yrs old. I am grateful that I have found you! I started taking metformin about 30 years ago when it was called Glucophage . 2000 mgs daily, and it helps control my blood sugar. I'm also almost 79 now and hoping a possible side-effect of metformin, slowing aging, proves to be true. Metformin is one of the safest and most effective drugs ever invented, at least for me....

Very timely video for me! On the strength of one of your previous videos (and now this one too) I made an appointment for next week to discuss coming off Gliclazide (UK) with a view to trying Ozempic® (semaglutide). My brother is getting on well with it after decades on Metformin. I couldn't tolerate Metformin (💩 ++ 😣) and have been on Gliclazide since diagnosis about 8 years ago. Hope that not too much damage has already been done! 😟 As usual, thanks ++. 👍

My colleague peptides show high levels of insulin yet my A1C is nearly 11. Taking 600 metformin 2pd and 14mg Rybelsus. Glypizude was effective for about 6 months then stopped working. Not medical advice but what think?

I'm glad you talk about this because my doctor just prescribed all these extra medications (Jardiance and Glipizide) after my Gloucose reading read a surprising and alarming 335. I've since not tested myself no where near than number, but was 157 and as high as 192. I've dropped down occasionally to the low 70s and the low 50s, which was scary. This all in about 2 to 3 days. I'm also still taking Metformin. I'm not liking the real low numbers I've been getting lately and especially not like the crappy way they make me feel. Not sure if Glipizide or Jardiance, or both is causing my blood sugar to drop to unsafe levels, but I'm convinced one of them is. I never felt any discomfort taking the Metformin alone, well my body did adjust to it, maybe too well.

januvia is a SGLT2 inhibitor....basically blocks the pathway that allows sugar from your blood that enters teh liver go back to your blood by cutting off that channel and making you urinate it out instead.

Great video and information and something that I want to speak to my endocrinologist about. I've been on Metformin-1000mg twice a day and Glimepiride 4 mg for many years. Is there ever a time where the medication will just stop working and maybe it's time to try something else? I'm a type 2 Diabetic for well over 15 years. Current A1c is 6.7. Thank you Dr. Erghin.

Metformin gave me stomach cramps. It took about a year for that it happened so it took awhile to figure it out.

I’ve been taking metformin for long long times… it’s cheap pills that what I can afford. But I’ve heard metformin is not good to take? But what else I can take beside metformin? Any kind of diabetic pills are cheap like metformin?

I'm technically a "type 2" diabetic (at least according to the icd-10 codes on my lab work orders although I do consider myself to be an insulin dependent diabetic as I've been tried on various oral and non-insulin injectables with either no effect or bad side effects since my original diagnosis in like 2012. However, since developing adrenal insufficiency my insulin needs are at best...... complicated and interesting. About the good thing about the adrenal insufficiency is that my A1C is dropping, but perhaps too well and definitely too quickly. When symptoms started my A1C was 7% something, then in December it dropped to high 6% and now it's at 4.6%. Sad thing is, taking either the pain meds I'm on (hydromorphone) for CRPS or,benzos (clonazepam) for tourettes will have my sugar crashing on me. But, if I dose with steroids then I best be sure to dose with insulin if I want my body to properly respond to the steroid dosing. Honestly, it's like FML for me.

I was taking Farxiga a couple of years ago. It was working great, my sugar was down, I lost weight. I started getting severe abdominal pains, like heartburn. They thought at first it was acid reflux. Then they realized I had euglycemic diabetic ketoacidosis. I had to go into the hospital for several days on a combination insulin and glucose drip. I'd almost like to try it again, but I don't know if I want to take the chance on that rare side effect.

Was just prescribed Glyburide-metformin

I was just taken off metformin, which makes me happy. I always had headaches from that drug. Instead I am taking a small dose of Farxiga which is working well for me. My last A1C was 5.3! The best medicine is a healthy diet. I have completely given up processed sugar, and have moved to whole grain whenever possible.

@@bobboscarato1313 I was doing very well with weight loss last year but hit a big snag after New Years. Brain chemistry, hormones, who knows but my appetite was completely out of control! I was STARVING every minute of every day. That’s why I was started on Ozempic in April. .5mg dose for now and it’s just starting to kick in. I am starting to lose the 15 lbs I gained back

I ended up in the hospital about this time last year. I was diagnosed as having Diabetes 1.5. I'm currently on Novolog and Levemir, do you have any other suggestions or are these adequate and appropriate for my diagnosis?

I'd say Metformin has caused me no adverse reactions but apparently hasn't controlled my diabetes that well. Well a lot of that is probably on me. It's the addition of Jardiance and Glipizide that appears to be dropping my blood sugar to unsafe levels.
