#10 James Simmons
Senator from Rhode Island from 1841 to 1847 and again from 1857 to 1862, Simmons got caught getting a contract for two Rhode Island rifle manufacturers in return for $20,000 in promissory notes. So basically, he was bribed to help these two companies make lots of money from the U.S. government, which needed lots of rifles as it turns out since it was fighting the Confederate forces in the Civil War. The reason why Simmons isn’t higher up on this list is because technically there wasn’t a law saying you couldn’t do this, although Congress promptly passed a law banning it after this.
#9 William Blount
Senator from Tennessee from 1796 to 1797, Blount was a Founding Father, and the only Senator on this list to actually sign the U.S. Constitution. Originally from North Carolina, Blount was instrumental in opening up lands west of the Appalachians to settlement. He bought up millions of acres out there himself, but his risky land investments caused him to get a lot of debt. Due to this debt, he conspired with Britain to take over the Spanish-controlled Louisiana to try to raise the prices of his land. Well, he didn’t get away with it. When Congress found out in 1797, he became the first Senator kicked out of the Senate and also the first federal official to get impeached. Blount was arrested, but posted bail and went to Tennessee and never came back. He never showed up to trial, and the feds eventually gave up trying to arrest him again.
#8 Joseph Burton
Aw man, this dude’s from my home state. Senator from Kansas from 1901 to 1906, uh Burton had a little conflict of interest. He was getting paid for defending a company successfully against the United States government while he was Senator. Eventually, he was found guilty of public corruption, which means he was misusing the power he had as Senator for private gain. Burton became the first member of the Senate to actually be convicted of a crime. Now, does that mean other Senators weren’t doing stuff like this before this? Of course not. But he was the first one to get caught.
#7 John Mitchell
Weird coincidence, Mitchell was Senator the same time as Burton. He represented the state of Oregon from 1901 to 1905 and was all about Big Business and against most of the political reforms of the Populists. The biggest reason why he’s on this list is because of his involvement in the Oregon land fraud scandal. Yep, this was more public corruption. Mitchell abused his power, helping a client get patents to fraudulent land claims.

The Senators that left to join the Confederacy did so because their respective States recalled them. At that time, Federal Senators were not elected by popular vote by the citizenry of a State but were selected by a States Legislature. They represented the State at the Federal level and not the citizens of their State. Before the Seventeenth Amendment was passed in 1913 every State had a law that gave the power to send and recall Senators to either the Governor or State Legislature. Most of the southern Senators were recalled from Washington, some against their wishes. To lump them all together is unfortunate as there were some who sought to seek a diplomatic and peaceful resolution to the foreseen war.

His racial positions were in line with the majority of white Southerners at the time. If you want to take a good look at corruption, look at Mississippi's "senators" during reconstruction. I know something of Bilbo because my cousin was widely-believed to have "ghost-written" his book, "Take Your Choice." Bilbo was slowing dying of throat cancer and simply in no condition to be writing. Evelyn Gandy, on the other hand ..... I've read his book. It is racist to the core, but neither Bilbo nor Gandy had a problem with that.

Nice video overall. To the criticism you're receiving over lumping all Confederate senators together despite their obligations to their state: the could have easily resigned or protested. That being said, few southern senators really disagreed with the succession of their states or withdrawal of their colleagues so it doesn't make much of a difference. Jefferson Davis was famously against succession and fought for the preservation of the Union. However once his state left he resigned his seat. On different note; I love reading the comments on you're videos. Despite so many videos about history and civics readily available on your channel, some people don't seem to understand the basics of either. Plus people commenting current or recently-made former-senators clearly didn't pay attention to the literal first minute of your video.

Blease (1868-1942) (D) another twofer for South Carolina not just cause they where racist but a special kind of Racism and some of the most most divisive, and hateful people in American history. You forgot Jesse Helms, the longest-serving popularly elected Senator in North Carolina's history. Helms helped organize and fund the conservative resurgence in the 1970s, focusing on Ronald Reagan's quest for the White House as well as helping many local and regional candidates. His efforts here was key in leading the Republican resurgence and the rise of neoliberalism with Reagan. He led opposition to federal intervention into what he considered state affairs (including legislating integration via the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and enforcing suffrage through the Voting Rights Act of 1965). As chairman of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee, he demanded a staunchly anti-communist foreign policy that would reward America's friends abroad, and punish its enemies. He opposed civil rights, disability rights, feminism, gay rights, affirmative action, access to abortions, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA), and the National Endowment for the Arts. Helms brought an "aggressiveness" to his ''conservatism'' (fascism), as in his rhetoric against homosexuality. The Almanac of American Politics once wrote that "no American politician is more controversial, beloved in some quarters and hated in others, than Jesse Helms".
