Animal instinct can be remarkably acute, detecting when people harbor ill intentions. Personally, I couldn't imagine raising a cat or dog with the intent of separating the offspring from their mother. In the animal kingdom, fathers may not always be necessary, but mothers certainly are. :)

I rescued my cat at an abandoned house by the main road. Her and her siblings were everywhere, and a ton of big cats too. They all ran away from me except Millie (my cat) and we could only help her. Then turns out her siblings all got ran over on the main street, it was sad but at least I was able to help 1
