Bill is the historian of the Rolling Stones and I respect that he has stood up for the truth rather than the narratives often pushed that Mick and Keith formed the band. He is the only one who still visits Brian Jones's grave and upholds his legacy as the man who formed the band from scratch

Greatest rhythm section ever?! Hardly. John Entwhistle and Kieth Moon are tops, hands down not even questionable. Bonzo and JPJ were also much better, as well as Neil Peart and Geddy Lee (this combo mostly due to Peart having consistently been rated as greatest R&R drummer of all time), McCartney and Starr, I'd also list Carl Palmer & Greg Lake (ELP), Clive Bunker w/ Glen Cornick (Jethro Tull classic lineup '68-70, listen to Tull's 2nd album STAND UP, '69); ... and others.

There's a KZread video of Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood playing and singing, with quest Bill Wyman playing bass, and you can see Rod and Ronnie completely mesmerized by Bill Wyman's bass playing, he was fantastic and really gave life to the number they were doing. As for the Rolling Stones, it amazes me that the others Mick and Keith, don't call him in to do the studio recordings, Wyman being so creative on the bass, as he always is. You see being an original member of the group he can do things on the bass, Darryl could never do, Darryl always has to double check himself, whereas Wyman never does. As Jagger says, "too good to ever throw away!" The Stones should call Wyman in for a few recordings at this stage of their lives, it would only be more magic, also, Mick Taylor's still alive. Come on Stones, do it for all of us, you know for a fact we'd love it too! Paul still swings with Ringo!

If I understood correctly, Mick and Keef always insisted on that the music and the lyrics were theirs, even when Bill, Charlie and even Mick Taylor contributed extensively to songwriting, sometimes (like the riff of of Street Fighting Man come from Bill Wyman). So I understand that they dont want to work too much with their old bandmates, even if they seem to be in quite friendly terms. Which is good. It is just something to realize.

Speaking as a bass player, it took me longer than it should have to recognize what great work Wyman was cranking out. But I got there. Mick Jagger noted once that playing bass in the Stones was not all that challenging. Song structure wise and rhythm were usually fairly straight forward and most bass players will pick them up quickly. Wyman however, rarely played in the boring fashion of the day and put together bass parts that really get it done.

Bill Wyman is a great blues man who knows a lot about it's history and origins. He mentions South America and travelling. One time I was lucky enough to visit Peru from an oil tanker I once worked on. The ship was moored about 10 miles off shore so a launch boat would run out to the ship every few hours to pick anyone up who wanted to go ashore. I was lucky enough to catch the launch and went over for a visit. Once there, I caught a cab to an open market where they sold all sorts of local art and crafts, blankets, carvings, you name it. I scrambled around and bought as much stuff as I could and brought it back to the ship to take home, how I did not know, but I somehow managed. Of the things I collected from there, one item is very large horrible looking bat, mounted in glass, which I still have, bearing its teeth, wings spread out. Also a very large wooden Spanish galleon for display. Things like this are very hard to find. Most of it is packed away in boxes, hard telling what's in them. I've forgotten now.

His book, "Stone Alone," is my favorite on the Stones. I can believe HE kept a diary. Very methodical guy. Keith not so much. Unusual bass style. He and Charlie Watts were one of the great rhythm sections in rock, largely due to their simplicity. Interesting guy, not without his pecadillos and complexities, mostly to do with women and money (according to his book not getting his fair share of the latter, more than his fair share of the former, plus the name Mandy Smith comes to mind, a serious misstep that today would probably put him behind bars, whether he had parental consent or not).

One thing that I have always wondered about is how coincidental it was that so many of the British Invasion band members were survivors of one of the most destructive wars ever waged in world history. The Germans waged a war of terror on the entire British population during the Battle of Britain. Most of the youngsters were shipped to the countryside where it was much safer. There were times when an entire wing of a hospital would be hit, killing all the newborns and hospital staff, not to mention the women who had just given birth to these children. Most of the adults in the urban areas would usually retreat down into the tunnels of the subway system every night only to emerge every morning to see the incredible destruction delivered by the Luftwaffe the previous night. Virtually all of the country's infrastructure was completely destroyed or severely damaged. So many of these people would grow up in poverty in many European cities.

Rock stars move to their own beat. Makes for an awkward, but interesting interview. God I wish he had stayed longer, their bass player Darryl is a terrible drag on the band. They sound so anemic sometimes. And it’s not because they don’t have the energy, either. Although they sounded pretty good when I saw them in Vegas a few years ago when they played songs off of Lonesome and Blue. Sounded like the band back in the early sixties that Bill talked about. He looks damn good for 84 in this. Smoked all those years and made it through!! Go Bill!!
