Very interesting. I took the Bergen to Oslo train route in 1992, but it was at night so honestly don't remember much - it was late in the season, also, so it was cold and slushy, and think the train stopped a lot. Not sure I realized what the Flam line was, thought it was all the same train route but you learn something new right and there is so much to see in Norway, it is kind of overwhelming. Just getting around is an adventure in itself. In Bergen, I asked about camping at the Information Kiosk and I was told there was none at that time, but that if I took the Funicular on the last trip up I could find someplace to camp there which I believe is allowed in Norway but she told me not to tell anyone. LOL. Overall I would say it was a bit late in the year to be camping even in September too cold and was not comfortable with the idea. Bergen is quite built up along the fjord. I had a nice walk down from the top of the Funicular in morning, very nice people out for a morning walk along the way, even an American or two, Bergen has more of a small town feel than Oslo although almost every town in Norway has a small town feel where you run into people that you meet again and again.

Thanks for rekindling our memories of Norway. In 1997 we travelled from Newcastle to Bergen via the Color Line ferry, sadly no more. We stayed over in Bergen until the next return ferry back three days later and celebrated our Silver wedding anniversary there. We took the Norway in a Nutshell tour travelling on the Bergen Oslo line to Myrdal and the Flåmsbana down to the fjord. A trip on the ferry to Gudvengen and a coach trip to Voss for the return trip to Bergen almost 12 hours later. A Chinese meal rounded off a magnificent September 1997, 25 happy years married and my 51st Birthday. We returned to Norway in 2003 via a fjord cruise, sadly our last visit. One trip I would recomend is a trip up the Dalsnibba from Geiranger, a truly epic trip.#

What a fantastic journey in the train 👍. When I was last year in Norway, we were supposed to go on a train ride (evening and night) to the Lofoten, but it got unfortunately cancelled and we had to fly instead, which was fine, but a train is a great experience through the beautiful landscape. Great video and very well presented. Top notch 🙏

Im really enjoying this fascinating journey with you to Norway, a place I dont think I will be able to visit so seeing it through your eyes is fantastic for me - thank you. Just curious how you prepare for the icy conditions ie footwear, clothing generally and how is the driving too - icy I imagine, were there lots of difficulites? Can you give us an insight into the prices of meals out etc, its interesting to compare. Many thanks again for a wonderful visit with you all today. xx

  • @MemorySeekers

We have quite a few winter trips so over time you get all the footwear and winter jackets and thermals. It wasn’t that cold really -7 was the worst but it can be colder there. The cars have winter tyres so most of the time you feel like you are driving normally. We didn’t have any really bad roads apart from near our cabin and you just slow down and take it easy. We never felt it was dangerous or we couldn’t manage it. As an example a beer is about £10 a pint wine £25 a bottle and for something as simple as burger and fries in a restaurant it could be £30. So we mainly cooked for ourselves where possible or really picked a restaurant carefully and didn’t try and have anything fancy.

Hi Simon and Will. I was just watching the newest video you put out this Easter weekend and realized I somehow missed this one. I was looking forward to it because I think the train is a great way to travel. Did a bit in Scotland and England. Only once in Canada where I live. The trip you took looked fantastic. I can’t imagine how jaw dropping going through the mountains would be. The first time I saw mountains was in Jasper, Alberta on a beautiful hot summers day when I was 14. All I could think of is that this is what it must feel like to stand next to God. I can’t imagine what these men endured setting down the rail lines. It must have been back breaking treacherous work and it’s good to be reminded of the sacrifices of those that came before us. Was curious if you found the 20 minute stop long enough before you had to head back on the train and how long was the trip in total to and from? Anyway it looked well worth it. Not many of us can say we’ve travelled the mountains by train. Thanks again. Your videos are always a treat. Take care ❤

Glad you found this one! It was a real highlight of the trip in Norway. There really isn't anything to do at Myrdal apart from change trains or wait to head back. 20 mins to take in the views from here was fine. In total our time on the railway was about 2 hours 30, but it just sailed by!

Hello, is the R45 train That leaves Myrdal the same train ( Flåmsbana) u showed in the video? We are going to visit Norway in May and are trying to book a one way trip from Myrdal to Flam but cant find That info anywhere. Should we book at norway Best or can we use the VY website? Also whats the Best side to sit on the train While going from Myrdal to Flam? Thank you for the vídeo, its amazing to see a glimpse of this views

Hello, There is only one train type that runs up and down the line from Myrdal to Flam and vice versa, Flamsbana. No other trains run on that branch line, so I would think the R45 is right but I cannot say for sure. When I did a quick Vy.no search for trains FROM Flam to Mydal is also mentions the R45 so maybe that is what VY.no refers to as the Flamsbana train in either direction? You can book combined tickets with VY.no as mentioned on this page www.norwaysbest.com/the-flam-railway/round-trip-with-the-flam-railway/ but I don't know if its cheaper or more expensive to book direct with bestofnorway. I think you would be wise to email best of norway and tell them where you are coming from (I assume Bergen) and they will tell you best options. They were are very helpful and quick to reply when we booked. For the views from Myrdal to Flam the left handside for probably 1/2 to 3/4's is best but it does switch around. Hopefully if you your train is not to busy you can switch or go stand by a door to get alterative views. Hope that helps in some way Have a great time!

I believe there are a few walking trails open in the summer only, but nothing else to see around the station.

As a Norwegian, I have visited. But please, before you go to Flåm, buy some food and drinks before arriving there. It's all tourist traps and the whole town feels fake. Norway is expensive, but not this expensive.

DONT, DONT, worry buddy, we got a nice DULL, shovel for you. NO EXPERIENCE required. You better get to work or you and your Chinese friends will freeze to death, like in the Rockies, shovel found frozen in their hands.

This train is part of the "Norway in a Nutshell" excursion. We took that a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of all parts of the trip! Highly recommended!
