I just looked up Cathcart Rail as a follow-up on another thread, then I saw CC's name here & was quite surprised. Best wishes for your business! I still think there's hope for rail, though US manufacturing trends are grim. Handsome paint scheme on your locos.

Maybe this gentleman could give JT an extensive visit of his train company. If JT would like to of course. Wouldn't we all like the view of JT climbing one of these iconic locomotives.

One thing railfans know about Jaw Tooth: He always goes the extra mile, on in this case, trestle, in his quest to provide local railroading history. I had never seen nor heard of this before and got an immense kick out of seeing it. And how many would find the house overlooking the tracks with a driveway under the trestle? Imagine all the railfans that would salivate over the thought of living there. Add to all this the excellent photography and commentary and we have the recipe for one helluva video. JT is indeed the intrepid explorer.

Yes, a cool place to live for a railfan but moving in would be a hassle with the slope under the low bridge.

I live here and actually they are doing repairs on it right now. One of the pieces holding it up starting breaking aoart

I crossed this bridge 6 times in 1956-57 on the National Limited while a student in college in Cincinnati. It is an exciting feeling going west as you start across the bridge as the buildings appear to go down & the train goes up in the air similar to taking off in an airplane & the landing when going east toward Parkersburg. Thank you for filming the bridge.

Don't get that with new bridges, do you? Unfortunately, there's gotta be something for workers to hold onto while doing maintenance, so that view disappears. Of course, their safety's much more important.

I just posted a reply relating a similar experience. Traveled the route several times with family from Baltimore to Chillicothe, Oh. The westbound, 29, stopped on the trestle as it left Parkersburg. Some switching was happening at the rear of the train, at least on one of several trips we took. We could have been on the same train, as that was about when I was riding with family. I would have been about eight years old if that happened. By dad was a B&O locomotive engineer and we got to ride for free.

Wow what an experience. When I worked in St Louis in the early 1980s I marveled at the 4 bridges over the Mississippi and 40 years later they still look great. Even move 100 feet and you get a whole new perspective

@@andywomack3414 Question - did the eastbound train go thru or near New castle PA? I ask NC when I was little, my mom & I took the B & O from Toledo to PA, and I remember going VERY slowly over a huge river. All you could see from the window was water on both sides. I admit that it was scary indeed, and I still can picture it 60 yrs later. I've been trying to figure out where this might have been.

We have a railroad bridge alot like this one here in New Orleans called the Huey P. Long Bridge, It was built for the Southern Pacific

About 50 years ago a friend of mine hopped a SP freight across that behemoth in a 40 foot boxcar behind a pair of C630s. Talk about some titty Pics

The summit of that bridge must be the highest point in Louisiana. It has to clear sea-going traffic I guess.

I grew up in Belpre, and still live in that area. I can tell you that in 1968, a local train would come through going westbound every afternoon just after school, and often if you hung out near the tracks, the conductor would toss some candy out of the caboose. All the way through Belpre, this track is elevated -- it basically cuts the town in half, right down the middle. CSX is upgrading and laying track right now in Williamstown and continuing up the WV side of the Ohio river, I understand all the way to Wheeling, so you might want to get over there and get some footage. I was told by the crew that they're re-routing traffic that way from other routes because it has less congestion or something to that effect. One of the continuous rail trains was parked on the Williamstown siding two days ago. Happy hunting!

That is one of the coolest trains I've ever seen in my entire life! Wow!

The engineers who have constructed this bridge have done a exellent job, 150 years is a long time for a bridge.👍🇺🇸JT, brilliant pictures.By the way, it's a very noisy living near the bridge.

Bridges _used_ to be built like that - extra large, heavy and strong, but now with modern computers and detailed understanding about the strength of materials, bridges can be built "just strong _enough"_ and so tend to wear out. One hundred years from now there will be no bridge infrastructure left from the second half of the twentieth century, but Victorian bridges and infrastructure will mostly still be going strong.

@@pulaski1 You're not kidding, since a lot of American infrastructure is crumbling. I've heard that many if not most American bridges need repairs if not replacement.

@@pablohammerly448 I think "most" is an exaggeration, but "many" certainly. The state (NC) is replacing numerous small bridges in my area. Of the ones I drive over occasionally or frequently, there have probably been ten replaced in the past 10-12 years, and those are only ones that I know of because I drive over them. Each one means that the road is closed for 9-12 months. About ten years ago they also replaced one of the most decrepit bridges in the US, here in NC, where an interstate (motorway) bridge that was over 50 years old was an absurd design irrespective of its age - it was narrow, had a steep slope (the bridge was down in the gorge), and as if that wasn't bad enough, it had a kink in it. So about once a year, usually at night, an 18-wheeler (artic) would hit the wall, tip over, and block the interstate. The new replacement is extraiorinary - it is a simple concrete beams on concrete pillar construction, and is pretty much flat over the river and gorge, so if you didn't look sideways beyond the paved surface, you probably wouldn't even notice that you had crossed a bridge.

My paternal grandparents used to live in Parkersburg then moved over to Belpre. Thanks for bringing back some great childhood memories!

This is my hometown! I didn't know this railroad trestle was the longest in the world! There are many fascinating things about Parkersburg.

What Amazes me is that after 150 years, the trestle is still being used! Obviously, it is well maintained! Thanks JT!

Nice to see 40 to 50 year old locomotives that have been rebuilt, repainted, looking like they just came out of the box. Local pride in good quality GM power. Great video.

What amazing is the fact that the engineers back then built the bridges big enough to accommodate the trains today.

This trestle reminds me the el trains that run through the five boroughs in NYC, lots of history in this picture just by the buildings alone. It also reminds me of the former high line that ran through the meat district in Manhattan,love the horn on this loco,never saw one quite like that,ten thumbs up,thanks jaw tooth!!

Forty years ago, I lived a block south of where you started filming, in a boardinghouse between the church and the white building. That's a parking lot, now. Between the trains and the truck traffic over the Belpre bridge, that building never stopped shaking. Thanks for the memory!

Stephen Pegum- he was coming up on a railroad crossing - they are required to give two Long blasts and one short blast on the horn- or something like that. I thought everyone who liked railroads knew that

That is cool as all get out! It's like a roman road coming into the modern city. I would bet it's scary to be on the crew and looking down as you cross with the train - no visible means of support :) And how nice is it that we see a short line at work on the trestle.

This Trestle is as Solid as it gets. They Don’t make Anything Remotely Close to this any longer. 👍

My son just moved to Virginia. When i come up there, i will surely have to visit this trestle. Very nice.

In the first scene,that's pretty cool "sheet" how that bridge levels off at the street with that grade crossing! Takes pretty fancy engineering to get that just right! 👍👍

Never seen a trestle like this one. At 7100 feet thats amazing. This is in West Virginia coming out of Ohio. That was so cool. Now we do have some spectacular bridges in Kentucky. That one beat the cake.

The BIP locomotives are beautiful.

Its amazing how the old bridges and trestles have withstood the test of time. Thanks JT.

I moved here in November. Love it here and the trains.

I looked up Parkersburg, West Virginia on Google and found the trestle on the photo image. It is one of the longest trestle and bridge I have ever seen! I also like that you will travel so far to get things like this on KZread!

But this one touched something in me; a testament to enduring work, how this monument built in 1871 is still functional and extremely aesthetic. I could sit there all day watching the trains ascend and descend the grade to the trestle.

@0:43 This seems like another time/ location that you would have benefitted from having a drone.

Back in 1972, it got hit by some barges, and was kinda shored up for a time. That line ran through my native Athens on it's way to Cincinnati from D.C. We would swing down that way to take the free bridge across the Ohio into Parkersburg, typically on our way to Ohio Valley Speedway on Friday nights. Sure do miss me old home 😉

You got that right!

Cross the tracks going into the highyard everyday on my way to work. Can walk outside and see the trains whenever they come through. The BIP Railroad is more active than CSX ever was. Awesome video.

I remember the old Belpre-Parkersburg Bridge...you could see right thru to the river AND back in the 70s Amtrak stopped in Parkersburg
