Dude, getting 14 mpg, mixed driving, with a rig like that is amazing! I'd be lucky to get 12 mpg hauling my truck camper on my stock super duty. I think I average between 8 to 10 mpg on my trips. Also, y'all could mitigate some of that highway body roll with beefier sway bars paired with quick disconnect end links for the trails. All in all, that's a beautiful rig and y'all did a fantastic job putting it together. Such a joy watching the video from start to finish!

We were pretty happy with the numbers after the dust settled! Sway bar disconnects would be awesome, haven't seen it done on an 80 series yet.

Awesome work! I remember the Toyota Chinook camper vehicle. I used to know someone who had a 1977-78 Toyota Chinook. For some crazy reason, no one at the time ever thought to offer an off-road version of the Toyota Chinook camper.

I have that same "tiny useless kettle" - I love that darned tiny thing! I use it every time I camp.

Nice to see your build! I have been watching all your other videos with great admiration! I have a Toyota Tundra that I have built out with an AluCab. I want to get my son into a Rig now and I believe yours is a great example for him to build upon! Your suspension is sooo important and the amount of detail and research that you did obviously paid off! The places that you have taken yourselves have proved that over and over! Great work! Thank you for the comment Megan! Stacey did a wonderful job on the details for sure. The solar panels are awesome, very high quality. In full sun they pull in over 200 watts! It would be nice to have some mounted on the roof as well, but these will charge us up from flat in about 4 hours. Currently cruising about Southern California until King of the Hammers!

I was wondering why you didn't go with the 1FZE and that totally makes sense. I love watching these videos.

Thank you for explanation on the details; on a long journey, those things really make or break your experience. I was one of those who bugged you with questions about the engine, I had some concerns. So, I paid attention and really liked your explanation for picking up the 5VZ. You know it well, and that is also important.For your intended purpose, I believe that i makes a viable proposition. Ease of repair, adequate torque, decent mpg. It's a sensible choice. I was curious of your rationale at the time, since most series 70's populating the roads around here use the 1GR (2UZ in the fancier SUV's). So parts are easily available and it's a bit up in torque for a heavy rig. The 5VG has not been as popular for a few years now here, so parts are more scarce. The old, super durable 1FZ remains popular too(so parts are also abundant) but I get it why it won't fit, and it is also an unbelievable gas hog, much worse than a v8. Most people who have crossed Darien will confirm how important mpg is, to the point that it influences your route and areas that can visit (I added a supplemental 24 gallon, for 47 total). I've been driving a 4Runner with a 2UZ, with 16-18MPG with 700kg+ loads racks, mud tires, etc..and I have been very impressed by it, it seems superior to the 1GR. However, I recently learned that changing the starter engine is NOT a side of the road proposition. That alone will make me consider a 1GR long chassis series 70 for my next vehicle; ease of service at the expense of engine life. Similar choice to the one you made. Rig is looking better everyday, and so are your production values. Amazing job, keep it up!

I got stranded next to a prison in rural South America. Like you, traveling with my GF, we were 18. We broke a water pump, middle of the night, huge thunderstorm. We barely made it to the gas station near the prison. No other building nearby besides those two. We were told to watch out for "The Tiger". My two buddies caught a ride to the closest phone, a brothel about 1 hr away from there. Wee hours of the morning. My GF and I tough we would be safe from "The Tiger" if we stayed inside the car. As soon as the buddies left, the attendant told us that "The Tiger" could easily open the jeep's doors. We wondered how he was so smart, found out that he was not a wild feline, but an escaped convict. We grabbed onto our signal flare, trying to keep guard and each other awake. Our buddies returned at sunrise, with some interesting stories and a half sleep mechanic. He walked right into the station's parts store, bought a toyota 2F water pump, the most ubiquitous engine in the area, got to work (making a cardboard and silicon seal) and we were able to leave before noon. Had we been driving tone of the other cars we considered, a 360 wagoneer or a 78 Range Rover, we would have had to camp there for another couple days. Fetching a harder to find pump required traveling to a larger city, in a place with non existent trains and very primitive public transport. So, thank you for your patience with my inquires, they don't come from a pissing contest frame of mind, but from trying to save you a similar experience. It wasn't my first or last break down in those roads, but the most dramatic. But the other stories repeated the trend: trucks with 2F engines were locally and quickly repaired, rarer engines required waiting for parts to be fetched from larger cities, extending the trips for days or weeks. Luckily for you, it seems that parts for your 5VZ engine are still available, since some Prados and Hiluxes also carried that engine. It's not as common as the FZ or the GR, but you should be able to get parts. Also, 14 mpg for that Rig is pretty impressive, that's very close to what most FJ's with V6 or Jeeps are doing. Good job there. With a decent supplementary tank, you should be able to visit areas in the desert restricted to other vehicles. More importantly, avoid being forced to stop in known dangerous zones.

These are all the considerations we thought long and hard about! The 2F is definitely a better global platform asa far as availability on parts. We're planning to equip ourselves with the parts that may need to be replaced or serviced along the way. Obviously there's no way to be 100% sure, but we will be as prepared as well can. It's great to hear stories like this! Thank you for sharing.

@@ToyotaWorldRunners That was a long time ago; nowadays, the 1GR is the most common (toyota) gas engine here, followed by the 1FZ. 5VG and 2UZ probably a distant third, usually a decent auto parts in a city will have parts. Amazingly enough, you can find some consumable parts for the venerable 2F, not as common as it once was, but still chugging along many dirt roads all over the world half a century after it's debut...

Your priority on trail worthiness will get you places I'll never be, and that's worth the trade off in comfort while you're young. I'll be keeping my F350/Bigfoot as I'm in my 60's.

Awesome video guys! I love the build so much. I recommend some Yokohama geolandar m/t 315/75r16. That’s what I currently run on my 80 series. They were cheaper than the 295/70r17 size I had for my GX460 and had more meat 🤷🏻‍♂️ E load, look great, work great on and off-road and pretty light in comparison. Keep making epic content and keeping good vibes! I hope we cross paths someday!

Very good! Hope it makes you feel better that my EFI swapped 2F nets me 10 mpg and is just station wagon. Thanks for the great ideas. I too especially like the custom bumpers. I also like the San Lou's Valley, such rugged mts. Dual cases would be great or even a taller ratio someday. It's a very impressive build and I love watching your videos. Jen isn't not hard to look at either. Even better is that she is all in on this as it's sure to be stressful sometimes with such tight quarters. (Been there). Look into Redfield Canyon east of Tucson for some remote camping and winter hiking if you are headed that way. Chiricahua Mountains are really nice too.

My first gen Tacoma gets 19-20mpg on the highway so that’s not bad. I’m Building an 80s chinook and I’m undecided if I should swap in the 3.4L or maybe look into a 3RZ. 🤷‍♂️

@@ephjay6t87 I actually swapped the 20R in the 77 chinook for a 22R. The plan was to combine the two and build a hybrid engine but I’m swapping chassis. Love the 20R though 🍻

Nice work guys! The amount of work, and the quality of it, you have both done is so impressive. 14mpg is so good for the size of your rig! I doubt there are many 4x4 rvs out there getting in the double digits.

Get a 4.7 single T case. Makes sketchy downhills a breeze! eliminates all the Hi-Lo gear overlap. With that weight and size, slower would be very nice off road when needed. You could have used it in the off road test video. amazing truck and trip. you two are lucky!

It's definitely in the plans for the future.

Since your wheels are 2 piece, you could get a shop to rebuild your wheels and have them step lip them up to a 16 and run E rated 315 75 16s. Going to be custom and might take some time but you'd get to keep the Bergs. Or find a set in 16!

It's been solid so far! Once in a while it'll flutter between 700 and 800 but typically it's steady around ~750

Did the 4.3l bolt up to the FJ motor mounts??

When are you guys starting your journey down the Pan-Am? And will you be taking the Baja then ferry to mainland route? We'll be in Baja in a week or so from BC as well, for a couple months. Would be stoked to bump into y'all and this rig!

Are you going to solar the roof for your trip? I have 4oo watt panels on my roof tent with 200amphr lithium batteries, runs my 2000 watt redarc inverter with an induction plate for cooking, also my toaster ..plenty sunshine here in Oz .." all hail the happy ball" free power lol

We would definitely love to have solar on the room once we reinforce it. Will have to find a good way to run the wires too.
