A few comments after trying this out myself: 1) Back USB-A ports support limited device types. I had a couple USB 3 hubs that I discovered only worked in the front USB-A ports. After several exchanges with support, they resorted to indicating this was by design, because the back ports use a "second level HUB chip". Nowhere in their documentation or online do I find this limitation documented. 2) Test out all your ports when you received the unit. The one I received had an SD card reader that didn't work. I tested it with SD cards that worked in a USB-A SD card reader plugged into one of the USB-A ports on the front of the unit. 3) The unit I had also had ALL the USB-A ports stop working after 72 hours. 4) I had several interactions (through email, generally a day turnaround per interaction). They clearly do not read emails, as each email included questions that were already answered in the prior email. So in summary: USB-A limitations, poor quality control (SD card reader and fail of all USB-A ports), poor product support

@@MaxTechOfficialawesome! Both current docks are quite warm, plus add the two 10 GB Thunderbolt NICs, looking at how clean your setup is I'm hoping it'll yield similar results. Can you use two separate TB cables if in the future a Mac (or TB4 PC) has different port spacing? I imagine if they keep the model and the future computer is popular enough they'll make another super-cable.

I have a quad monitor setup. It was originally 4 Dell Ultrasharp monitors off of my Mac Studio but a piece of software introduced a bug so it won't work on the four monitor setup but will work for 3 monitors. So I added a 5k iMac to get my 4 monitors back on my desk. I also have an M1 Pro MacBook Pro and I ordered it before realizing that it only supported 2 external monitors. So I had various configurations of M1 mini and iMacs to get 4 monitors and then bought the Studio. If you regularly need to run with 4 monitors, then I prefer the Studio as it's one device with a ton of ports and a big heatsink and strong fan. So it keeps the number of cables down, deals with any cooling issues, and gives you lots of ports. My Ultrasharp monitors all have built-in port hub for up to an additional 15 USB-A/C ports. My office is in the basement and I like to leave my MacBook Pro upstairs in the living room so I don't have to bring it up and down stairs depending on where I'm working. I much prefer a separate laptop and desktop. The Studio is also the home NAS so and I can access the files on the Studio from the Mac. The Studio also has a Time Machine disk always attached and a second Time Machine disk which I use monthly so that I have multiple backups. I generally copy work product to the Studio for the backup. If I need to take a trip, I copy files to the MacBook Pro for use on the road. The device reviewed looks pretty solid but one issue that I have read about with docks is if driver support lasts for 10, 15, 20 years. I think that it's difficult for hardware vendors to provide driver support for a very long time and I've seen Apple break hardware drivers on third-party gear before.

This looks perfect for what I'm after. Running a MacBook Pro 16" with Studio display just doesn't give me the ports I need. Additionally, I am forced to connect my Apogee Duet 3 audio interface to my MacBook Pro directly because of some issue when connecting it to the studio display. I'm constantly juggling cables and devices on my only available TB port on the MBP to charge my peripherals and phone etc.. since my studio display ports are all used up by external SSDs and an ethernet adapter. The dock would solve the ethernet adapter, and provide me with more than enough ports to connect all my periphery and SSDs.

Shame that it doesn’t have display link or similar functionality to enable additional thunderbolt displays using an M1 or M1 Pro. My biggest regret with my 14” M1 Pro is that I read the specs as maximum 3 displays - which it can do, however one *must* be the built in display. Even in clamshell mode only 2 external are supported. I get around it by having my 3rd Thunderbolt Display plugged into an older Mac and using the extended display to connect to it. It works well but is clunky and way less than optimal. Next time I’d spring for the extra and buy the Max version.

@@WarriorsPhotoyes, we don’t use it for internet most of the time and instead it’s for those of us who have NAS/server setups for video/media editing. You might be asking what’s the purpose of a NAS. It is a network attached storage that allows you to access your data where ever you are in the world as long as you have an internet connection as well as it helps to consolidate all of your data. Imagine having one drive that can hold multiple hard drives worth of data, but with redundancy in case a drive fails. The other benefit is it helps you to stay organized. It is much easier to access one drive rather than having to pull out like 10 external hard drives where you don’t know which drive has which files. Switching to a NAS, vs. having multiple internal or external hard drives is the best decision I’ve made in years

@@WarriorsPhoto I’m just your average joe that likes to take photos and make videos when I go traveling. The 10 gbe is just helpful for when doing real-time playback directly off of the NAS. Using the regular 1 gbe is like trying to play a 4k video using an old usb 1.0 or 2.0 vs. playing a 4K video off of a usb 3.0 flash drive. With the 1.0 you’ll get buffering and the video may not even play, but if you get the usb 3.0 drive with faster and more bandwidth you’ll be able to play the video smoothly. It’s definitely a sticker shock in terms of the cost for initial setup (NAS with 10 gbe capabilities + a 10 gbe adapter for your computer + drives + (optional 10 gbe network switch)) but the difference between this and using external hard drives is just a quality of life improvement as well as it brings peace of mind in case a drive fails. Once every thing is setup you’ll have loads of space depending on how big your drives are and how many drive bays your NAS can take. All you’ll have to do is just replace a drive if one of them ever fails and you’ll also help subvert the disaster of losing everything if you were to just use one external hard drive. That being said redundancy is the first step to protecting your data. You should also backup your data as well. I have my data backed up to two separate drives. One drive is at the bank in a safety deposit box. And I keep another one at home in a fireproof media safe. Every month I’ll rotate out the ones in the safe for the ones at the bank. Having a backup off site is the best insurance you can have against a disaster. Often times it’s easy to rebuy all of our stuff, but losing years worth of photos, videos and experiences can be utterly devastating for many

As far as the concept of a KVM switch, depending upon what you are specifically wanting to use it for, you could try using Apple's "Universal Control" feature that allows you to operate an second Mac on the same network with the same keyboard and mouse from the first system.

I'm using another one for my 6K XDR display which uses a crazy amount of bandwidth and the rear USB-C ports still work at full speed just like if it was plugged directly into my Mac which other docks have had issues with which is why with the TS4 I had to plug my server in to my mac directly with another cable.

I wonder if this would work with a Windows machine as well, if it has two TB4 ports and you use two separate TB4 capable cables to hook it up? Would be an interesting test. Is there some special sauce in the included cable? Sure I use a Mac mostly, but occasionally need to hook up a windows machine. Kind of limited target user group with the fixed dual port cable, nice to plugin yes, but also Apple might even change the port spacing. Sure unlikely, but they might. Would make sense if it also works with separate cables. And yes, pity is it not also DisplayLink compatible. With all the features and ports, they could have included it too.

Aren’t the two Thunderbolt port next to each other on the MacBook Pro on the same Thunderbolt channel, and thus have only two DisplayPort streams and 40Gbps throughput shared between them? How is it getting four 6K output? Is it some type of non-native DisplayLink type video solution? Also, if it’s a single channel, using two DisplayPort streams will seriously cut into the downstream data bandwidth, making, say, writes to an attached SSD/NVMe drive slow.
