Worlds CHEAPEST subwoofer takes on 12,000 WATT Amp!!!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I purchase and connect the cheapest subwoofer I could find online (Pyle) to my crescendo Encore 12k to prove that you can run low powered subs on a high power setup if need be. Proving the point it is better to have headroom and over power your speakers rather than under power them. Enjoy!

So I’m old-school. And I’m in my 50s. About 35 years ago Pyle Was the speaker to go to if you wanted base. If you look at what they called a Pyle driver 6 x 9 it was as heavy as some of the 10 inch subs today. It’s probably 3 Times heavier than that subwoofer.

There’s a lot of misconceptions about power in the car audio community making me glad that this video was made. People think that sending too much power to a driver will shorten its lifespan when that’s not the case. It actually plays better because of the extra dynamic power available. My Comp S that’s rated for 300 rms/600 peak receives about 500 watts of clean power and it has no problems utilizing it. As someone else said, blowing equipment is usually when clipping and excess distortion comes into play otherwise you’ll be fine. Coil may get warm but if your woofer has a good cooling system, that shouldn’t be too much of a problem either.

Not sure, clipping is usually about tweeters because they get more power when trying to reproduce all the harmonics in squared off waves. Also tweeters are killed by inadequate crossover (set too low or with too shallow a roll off). With bass it's more about whether the music is long continuous tones without breaks, or short kicks with possibly a bass guitar line. You might be able to send a thousand watts or more to a 300 watt sub on rock music (provided displacement limits aren't exceeded in the enclosure you're using), but would kill it as soon as you switched to rap bass. I've found the dangers of excess clean power are that the speaker doesn't even sound all that bad before it dies.

From my understanding, pofessional sound engineers generally try to use an amp which is capible of putting out 2 to 4 times more power than the driver is rated for. If I were using 100 watts to play a 40 hertz tone which results in an output of 130 db, and the recording reaches a point where the level of the 40 hertz tone dropped 10 db in the studio, it will result in reducing the amp power from 100 watts to a single watt. Having extra power provides headroom for the dynamics of music so when parts of recordings that are recorded at a lower level are reached, there is still plenty of power to drive the speakers without clipping.

@@TimpBizkit No, clipping is not “usually about tweeters”. Clipping can occur in an amp, subwoofer, speakers, tweeters, etc.. Their are plenty of resourceful videos and articles that can explain in deeper detail about what clipping actually is. Just make sure your equipment is receiving the proper voltage/signal and you will avoid waveform extortion, therefore making sure you are not clipping and not at risk of damaging any of the components in your system. Wether it’s the amp, sub, tweeters, speakers, etc.

Finally someone talking about that and not the opposite when the amp is the limiter. Also in the case of a high power amp on not even half what it can do make a lot cleaner power and is very dynamic compared to a small amp that is just enaugh for the system. Because of cleaner and more dynamik power it also sounds better :)

I’ve been telling people for years that if they send clean power to a subwoofer that is not clipped and you aren’t mechanically maxing out the subwoofer then it will last a very long time. I’ve got a video on my channel showing how long it takes to blow a cheap subwoofer. Seconds is all it takes if the signal is clipped. That same 125 watt 8” subwoofer lasted 9 months with 500 clean watts going to it! That’s proof that those people bragging about blowing subwoofers just don’t know what they are doing.

Amp power is only half the story. Distortion and clipping will kill it faster than over powering it in very short bursts. As long as you don't hit xmax and bottom it out it can probably take 800 or more for a good while before getting toasty. Got some old school road masters rsw80 dual voice coil subs and they are rated for 40 watts per coil or something close to that and I've pushed them with 100 watts plus driving them hard to the mechanical limits *with out bottoming out* for extended periods and while they did get pretty warm they did not darken the voice coils and they did not blow.

Good job on making this video without destroying a piece of the earth. Understand the demonstration is to show that underpowered sub can handle high power amp if the gain is set correctly. But what about sound quality? are these subs producing reasonable sound quality for those who are budget constrained?

I did on An older model plg 10 gear series (light purple coloured ) its ok i used it playing full range at first its ok but wen used as mid range with passive cross overs sounds splendid ' i still use it with a 3 wat home amp with a 2 way split (2" 5w tweeter ) i was shocked that the sub still played on such low power with digital eq on ( an set for the type of music one plays ) jus manages to fill the room an not disturb the negibours and their pets complaints for every day use ( music an gaming ) i cant wait to learn abt these newer models

Yeah i used to to play shit out of 2x 15" JBL GT152 subs back in the days(25 years ago or so), they where rated something like 300w peak and i was putting to em around 2000-3000w rms, they where just fine around 2 years until one of em burn, but they where so loose already that they where gone anyway at that point.. after those i got Hifonics 15", that never burned but was rated something like 1000-1500rms :D

Question for you? I have an old school MA audio amp HC-4002. Rockford fosgate P-400-4. Audio Control 6x crossover pre amp line driver, Audio Control EQS Consert Series EQ duel bandwidth pre amp line driver, Rockford fosgate 6 1/2 prime components with crossovers also. Rockford fosgate 6×9's. Pioneer head unit. It's the older unit with the built in crossover and EQ with multiple displays etc. Any advice as to whether I should ditch the crossovers for the separates and run straight from amp? But then what do I do about the 6×9's if the 4 channels are tied up. Should I ditch the audio Control EQ AND cross over and run it from my head unit? Or keep all that etc. I had this In a 84 Camaro. And pulled it out to put in my semi. Oh, and 2 Rockford fosgate punch 10's T-1'S. Any information is greatly appreciated

Sorry for the delayed response. If I were you, I’d keep the crossovers that came with your components. For 2 reasons. 1, They are already dialed in by the manufacturer for your mid/tweet to perform optimally. And 2, frees up channels 3&4 for your 6x9’s. If you got a decent head unit with lots of functionality, I like adjusting the settings from the actual head unit so I can fine tune easily on the fly if desired.
