Worldbuilding Basics - 8 Tips for Technology and Magic

Art of the Arcane presents:
8 Tips for Technology and Magic!
As always, brought to you by the Art of the Arcane blog.

• Magic and Tech should not be so powerful that they shake the fabric of your world's development. They also shouldn't be so mundane that they are impractical.
• The limits your world has on its magic or tech is what makes it interesting. It makes your heroes clever in the way they use it, and it lets your antagonists break it compeltely.
• Assess whether your magic or tech is 'just there' or a fabric of your world. If you don't integrate it properly, it just becomes a tool to move the story forward.
• Repition and consistency in the way you use spells or tech are the keys to a system.
• The more you explain your magic or tech, the more useful it can be. The less you explain it, the more wondrous it becomes, but it also is less useful to solve problems.
• Take a movie or book that uses a cliche or dated magic or tech. Now reinvent this story with practical application of the lessons you've learned. It's a great exercise!
• Limitless power is the worst kind to have. Avoid 'wish' magic at all costs.

Thank you. I have been trying to figure out to have phones in a post apocalyptic magic earth. This has been very helpful. Been watching videos for a week.

So glad to hear it! Communication with magic has to be its oldest form, right? Like writing, cave paintings, and even computers, the goal of communication is the earliest form of mastery. I'd imagine magic would be the same. All the best!

Watched some of your Worldbuilding Videos and I must say, some points you make did actually help me to take a more determined route of setting my systems in stone. I struggled alot before and was very insecure about my systems and had to adjust them not because they were not well developed , thought through or simple enough. More that I had a full book to write and I wanted to create a freshly unique system was the crux and it hindered me to finally say "That's it!". Now I even drifted off to an old hobby of mine: short stories, to convey my system a portion at a time! It's like a mosaic picture that fills out blanks with every story you read... very Lovecraft-esque and I dig that kind of storytelling, because I use much of mystery for my magic. You only grasp a brief amount of what's really going on with the magic, but it is enough to satisfy my friends and to make sense for them. I dare to say it's about 70% hard and propells alot of the plot... trying not to rely on Deux Ex Machina but I do not always want to explain the whole concept for the sake of mystery. For the better part my friends now drove me to the point were I am adapting now my fantasy world into a working Pen&Paper RPG and THERE you find alot of devils, I can tell you because it has to be fuild and picked up fast by the players and feel good at the same time. So anybody who came here for P&P purposes is damn right I say, it really helps. Keep your videos coming, they are very helpful, atleast to me!

Could make bracelets magically linked that vibrate a gem in sync with each other making two wearers able to use morse code with it. Of course it would make communication take a while. So using it in the middle of a fight would be difficult. The code might not even be as uniform as morse code making the item only useful to those who know the code.

That's definitely the kind of historically-minded thinking that makes things believable, for sure.

Just thought of a logical improvement someone might think of with magic such as what I described before. Generals can have collars on unit commanders in the field that can give them orders via the morse code esque thing so the general with a vantage point can better control the forces in the field or the collar can be put on lower rank men so if their unit commander is taken out they can still get big picture orders from the general. It has it's flaws but would essentially work similar to how old drumming/trumpet/or flag commanding worked. The first military who thinks to use them in such a manner would likely have a bit of an advantage on the battle field till other nation's adopted the idea.

I sort of stumbled upon your videos and really enjoy these series. You being an author, must have heard of Saderson's laws of magic, when it comes to magic systems & storytelling. How do you feel about those laws and his implementation of them in his books? I wonder what video will be next. I'd personally like to see something about races and cultures and how to make them 'feel' unique, interesting and fit within a world so that it still makes sense.

I feel he pretty much nails it. I do think that the four laws are a good guideline, but there is room to still make missteps while still following the rules. There is a such thing as too much wonder, just as much as there is too much technical jargon and/or too much utility. Also a system, whether it be technical or magical, should never be as important as the story it serves.

15:04 You could make it work if it's the antagonist that has that power

I think genie wishes are too dangerous in general, protagonist and antagonist alike, for the same reasons. But, I would say there's more story possibility in the antagonist having it, if the writer could find both a clever and believable way to beat the antagonist despite that power.

I have the basis for a magic system, which includes a pseudo-scientific basis for why magic exists in my world in the first place. I'm thinking about the interdependency between magic and technology and all that. More than that, I have a place in science (mostly astrophysics) for magic and thus the origin of my world. I would love to have a moment of your free time to share my ideas with you and get them revised by you.

Its so hard being a pantser writing magic systems because i have awesome ideas while writing that make sense to me in that moment. when im not writing i just cant come up with anything or i feel too lazy to go around making mind maps of my magic systems.

I am creating an Isekai series I want to create magic and tech in my world because there's a conflict that magic can't solve because I was planning an epic battle in the final book with 'A futuristic armor', I need to make the book one in series first of course, but it's hard because it seems in my world build the Dwarfs are the only technology being. The problem with worldbuilding things gets cut out the story so you could fit the story of how you wanted or not. I have been drafting and worldbuilding for a month now so how I fix this problem? I might cut out some races and keep some that are relevant to the plot or there isn't room for them in my world.
