    my personal "canonical example" of a name slowly changing over time is Joan of Arc. that is not her name, she wasn't ever really even called the name that "Joan of arc" derives from at the time. she was just "Joan" often called the "Maid De Orleans" (possibly mis-spelled here). but her father was called "Jacque Darc" so books of history would call her Joan Darc, and someone assumed it was a shorthand sort of spelling of Joan De Arc. and so her name became Joan of Arc. of arc? where or what the hell is arc? nothing! it's a misunderstanding.

    That is great. Thanks for that. Upon looking it up I find it doubly funny that the Wikipedia page which explains why this was never actually her name is also using that name to refer to her repeatedly. While it was not her name, it is the name given to her by history and thus has become her name after all.

    I for one loved the way you presented it in Strongholds & Followers, with the thought process on display and alternative given. But then I have been playing d&d and dming for 23 of my 32 years and with probably more than half of your vids i watch and I go “oh yeah, I guess that’s kind of what I do too, but I never heard it explained before” :) keep up the good work Matt, love your stuff and looking forward to more

    Also: The Sahara Desert (Desert Desert), Chai Tea (Tea Tea), Naan Bread (Bread Bread). This is a super widespread naming thing that happens the way Matt described. Foreigner goes "what's that?", local says "chai he (it's tea)", foreigner says "Oh, chai! That must be the name for this specific type of spiced tea". And so, the general word for a thing in one language becomes the word for "the version of that thing from/in that place" in another language.

    While they stopped being specialist colleges because teaching facility is shared across the colleges, you still have some colleges being pre disposed to different subjects or having a larger percentage of the intake.

    I wonder if this is an appropriate place to ask about Ajax? I have heard Matt mention that Ajax wants to see the world covered in blood, but I don't understand what that is about. Sauron, for example, wanted to cover the world in blood, but only as an antecedent to his primary aim (at least, as he saw it) of trying to bring everyone under enlightened control. Is Ajax in that vein, or does he literally want destruction and blood for its own sake?

    Can someone explain the city layout, very confusing. Whats up with the colors and circles? How is that a city?

  • @crunchydragontreats6692

    @crunchydragontreats6692

    4 жыл бұрын

    The city is basically round and on the coast. Each of the colors represents one of the Families that hold power in the city and where in the city they hold power. The light blue represents water. The white and other colors represent land. Think of the boroughs of New York City with each borough being controlled by one Family or another. Notice he refers to them as House (insert Family name here).

    The map was grabbed from the game Diplomacy. The shapes don't really matter all that much and aren't meant to be geographic. What matters is what districts are touching what other districts, what districts contain power centres and where the water and city limits are. In short it's not the kind of map you would use to plan a route, it's the kind of map you'd use to keep track of who's in charge.

    Sorry. I respectfully must disagree that Anna is doing or going to do a lot of role playing. She has chosen a Lawful Evil character and does nothing to act within the definitions of that alignment. At best she plays neutrally.

    Even if it's not playing the alignment on the sheet that's still role playing though? Personally I don't think people should restrict themselves as being defined by their alignment. Plenty of people of play their character different than what they thought the character would be, it's part of the discovery proceess in rp.

    Now that Judge is commander though, she is much more Lawful (commanding, authoritative) and much more Evil (power-seeking). I think her seeming neutrality derived from the fact that she was a follower/soldier under King’s command. In her lawful perspective/attitude, it would not be her place to question King’s orders - that is not what a good soldier does. And King is neutral good, so Judge probably seemed more neutral in light of that. Of course, it’s all sort of arbitrary. They are human after all and may not be ‘perfect’ role players (characters actions always align with characters motivations). I’ll return to my initial point though - now that Judge has usurped command, Anna, and therefore Judge is really playing up that Lawful Evil alignment.
