Today, 3,000 hospital beds in Britain are still occupied by men wounded in battle, and about 400,000 men are at least partially disabled from wounds suffered in “wars to end all wars”.
What effect has war, and the memory of war, had on their lives?
In this extract Peter Williams speaks to injured War veteran Charles Hankins about when he was wounded in North Africa in 1942 and how it has affected him.

Most World War II interviews are when they’re much older this is definitely an early interview and the memories are just a bit more fresh in his mind he definitely gives a very chilling mental aspect of the war.
I owe him such a debt,so brave. I will never forget him,or those brave men.

That is a tough bloke, he kept himself well acted as he remembered terrible awful times.
A sobering, worthwhile interview.
That's a real hero!!
When people ask why that generation didn't talk about the war you only have to watch a few of them actually giving details to see why
God bless him, and all the other Veterans. So much respect for him, and not enough words to give him, and the others, what they're really due!
That is one brave honest man. That is why you should wear your poppy with pride and never forget what those people did for us and our country. Thank you 🌺

I grew up in the 1970s, still plenty of WW@ and some WW1 vets around.Including my Grandfather and some uncles. They didn't want thanks, they didn't march on Anzac day, they hated war and the politicians that made them go. War is a rich mans business , but they never fight.

Not particularly true in both world wars the upper classes in Britain died at higher rates than the working class

Wow this is another interview from the same producera as the ”Sidney Williams(?)” who was a veteran from WW1? Do you perhaps have the whole version?
This is the old school British "stiff upper lip" Toughness. This man gave his all.....so all of the current pansies in England can run around over using the word brave and courageous.....and give away their rights to self determination and protection. It's sad. God Bless you Sir.....and thank you for your sacrifices.....there are those of us who appreciate it.
