World War III 'will happen' if Russia beats Ukraine | LBC analysis

As Ukraine's Prime Minister warns there 'will be World War III' if Ukraine loses its conflict with Russia, Andrew Marr speaks to Lord Nick Houghton, Former Chief of the Defence Staff and Professor Peter Frankopan, Professor of Global History at Oxford.
In an interview with the BBC in Washington, Denys Shmyhal spoke on the need for US security assistance, stressing: "We need this money yesterday, not tomorrow, not today.
"If we will not protect... Ukraine will fall. So the global, the global system of security will be destroyed... and all the world will need to find... a new system of security.
"Or, there will be many conflicts, many such kinds of wars, and in the end of the day, it could lead to the Third World War."

It was Mr Putin who unilaterally chose to illegally militarily invade a sovereign, internationally recognized nation and society. Ukraine posed no similar threat to Mr Putin's Russian Federation. No threat of first military strike, and no threat to militarily invade the Russian Federation either. Consider first the actions of Mr Putin, as whatever he is stating about the invasion is at minimum... 90% pure misdirection narrative, and bluffing.

€260 billion of Russian assets have been frozen in European accounts. €6 billion has been earned in interest on that money so far. The rules based order is based on sovereignty aka the legal equality of UN member states. Big or small it doesn’t matter, they are vested with juridical equality. That’s why Russia cannot just do what it wants in Ukraine. Imperialists hate sovereignty.

  • @jologo18

The "rules-based international order" (the "RBIO") is just a term the US made up because international law imposes too many inconvenient obligations on nations, including the US. Hence, the US only calls for the application of international law when it is advantageous to it. When international law is disadvantageous, it is ignored. By applying the label "rules-based international order," the inherent hypocrisy of this sophistry is elided. For example, unilateral sanctions (as opposed to UN imposed sanctions) have dubious legality under international law, but are a mainstay of US foreign policy, and by extension of the US-invented "rules-based international order." This is consonant with the principal objective of US foreign policy, which is to maintain "full spectrum" global dominance that is the essence of the so-called "Wolfowitz doctrine." Caitlin Johnstone defines the RBIO as "... an order in which the US makes up the rules [that] nations had better obey .... It means rules for thee but not for me."

Your opening remarks are not an accurate framing of the Ukraine conflict. This war, which is essentially about NATO expansion and Russian fears of a hostile power on its southern border, was completely avoidable. But it wasn’t avoided owing to Western arrogance and intransigence. (See its scuppering of the peace talks in Istanbul in March 2022.) Ukraine was never going to win this war, and there is nothing the West can do to change the outcome. It's not only a matter of material now, but of trained soldiers - of which Ukraine has no more supply. People like Scott Ritter have been predicting this result for 2 years. If you weren't so blinkered in your reporting, you would be aware of such alternative viewpoints, and Ukraine's inevitable defeat wouldn't come as such a surprise.

Bye bye Syria, bye bye Kazakhstan, bye bye Georgia, Armenia, Mali, Niger...and others. Russian did this in 50's, 60's and 70's and it broke them. Seems they need breaking again.

The money the US has sent as we know is basically going to US manufacturers or has been 'lost'. This kind of war mongering conversation helps no one. The idea that the West has a moral high ground doesn't hold up. I did maths at Oxford and what I learnt is that to solve a problem you have to look at everything -from every angle-in order to see what is happening. The conversation here would not be out of place in the 18th century.
