absolutely incredible hair....

So glad this movie is - finally! - available on DVD with good picture quality. As an Inger fan I like the movie for that reason alone of course. But you really have to have lived in the "duck and cover" era, even practiced the same, to really appreciate the nostalgia. And there is more on many other levels too - but just love the movie.

This is one of the most underappreciated films of the 50s

Harry Belafonte was a great man surely speaking his own truth in this film

@ShawDAMAN okedoke! but i never said that was ALL there was to the scene, or that all emotional scenes involve sex. but there is a strong vibe of it here that is not accident on the part of the film-makers.

I saw this good film in 1957,italian title,"la fine del mondo" the end of the world". Great Harry Belafonte!

This was a very daring scene for the times. In fact, Ms Stevens was the aggressor in this movie. She made it clear that she wanted a relationship with Mr. Belafonte. Very daring for its time.

Mmm-mmm! Inger and Harry had a genuine, beautiful "chemistry" going on in this film - scandalous to many in those days. To me, a very classy pairing. Inger had a reputation for falling in love with her leading men. In this case, I could believe that to be true.

@ShawDAMAN yes i heard about that. we've lost a few good ones in the past. i could never make up my mind whether this film was a bit silly or not, but i found it highly enjoyable nonetheless! i definitely think this scene is supposed to resemble a painful, awkward bout of lovemaking- not for its own sake, but partly, to emphasise the racial taboos that were prevalent at the time (and now, judging by some comments on youtube!) ...and partly because i read it somewhere!

If there is ever a remake of this movie my dream cast would Idris Elba, Lupita N'yongo and Benedict Cumberbatch. Benedict Cumberbatch would play Harry Belafonte's role; It would be a reverse of the scenario in the original.

@norristerse LOL not at all. I love the film, just not your interpretation of it. I like these actors a great deal. I think Stevens was particularly underrated and I'm sorry for her unfortunate end...

Of course there's more to the scene than showing he's a bad barber. There's also more to it than some clumsy attempt to show how horny the main characters are(?!) There's a lot more to humans as well, and much current entertainment/attitudes seems to forget this. That bothers me. I didn't say sex and emotion were mutually exclusive. But nor does it absolutely follow that where there is emotion there is sex, or sexual 'undercurrents.' Whatever, didn't intend to start an argument. cya

@norristerse I have noticed, surely. I'm just tired of nine out of ten videos on youtube (seemingly) having crude sexual comments on them, almost irrespective of the actual subject matter at times!! The scene is *emotionally* charged for sure, but 'steaming groinage' is really a bit much to say the least.
