World Premiere of Hadrian: A New Canadian Opera | Hadrian Opera | Talks at Google

On October 13, 2018, the Canadian Opera Company marked the opening night of the highly anticipated world premiere of Hadrian by composer Rufus Wainwright and librettist Daniel MacIvor. The opera recounts the epic love story of Roman Emperor Hadrian and his young lover, Antinous. Erased by history, their story is reclaimed for the 21st century by its creators in a star-studded production from renowned Canadian director Peter Hinton.
The creative team and cast behind Hadrian visited Google for a panel discussion on the eve of their world premiere. This lively panel discussion covers many topics: opera for beginners, including learning about the opera landscape in Canada; the definition of a "Dramaturg"; and why an opera centered around a same-sex love story in the context of a foregone empire means something now, even millennia later.
This is the ultimate behind-the-scenes look into the first world premiere of a Canadian Opera Company-commissioned opera since 1999, and the first COC-commissioned opera to premiere on the stage of the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.
Panelists:
Composer: Rufus Wainwright
Librettist: Daniel MacIvor
Director: Peter Hinton
Dramaturg: Cori Ellison
Opera Singer: Isaiah Bell
Moderated by Bob Cornwall.

I realized that the composer, librettist and dramaturg work with great intensity to get the various elements of the opera together, like the history, emotions etc which must flow to create an opera. The role of the dramaturg was new for me.It was also interesting was the fact that for a premier of an opera, the singer doesn't have role model or previous performances he can review. So it is definitely a challenge as he is the role model.
