World Première Recording: Paul Hindemith - Enthusiasm. By Stathis Karapanos & David Aaron Carpenter

New album of Paul Hindemith's complete works for flute by flutist Stathis Karapanos includes the world première recording of Paul Hindemith's Enthusiasm for Flute and Viola (1942).
From the American composer Harold Shapiro we have an impressive description of his first lesson with Paul Hindemith. Hindemith had written a long cantus firmus on the blackboard right at the beginning of the class and had asked the students to write a composition in strict counterpoint within five minutes. Nobody could complete the assignment. Hindemith then sketched another cantus firmus, and after he had supplied the voices, he said to the students: “See? Here’s how you should be able to do it …fluent, quick.” Hindemith composed a comparable piece, Enthusiasm for Flute and Viola, during a composition class at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. He wrote the piece on the blackboard while his students looked on.
