The argument really started about the UK stealing resources from our territorial waters, fish, oil, etc. the isands are yours but the waters they reside on belong to Argentina acoording to the several signed treaties about territory and territorial waters. The UK is ilegaly ocuping Argentina's waters not territory. (Exuse the bad spelling, Am not a native speaker nor an expert in the languaje)

Correction! Dönitz succeeded Hitler directly as President, not Chancellor (Hitler was both). Goebbels was succeeded as acting Chancellor by Krosigk.

yup donitz and goebells succeeding hitler in different roles, head of state and head of government, at this time in world history head of state would have been considered the higher position, and thats why donitz surrendered. Head of state is usually head of the military as well as foreign affairs and policy. Head of government runs the operations of the country.

Craig Anheliger Wait, I thought the position of president was left symbolically empty after that veteran general died, leaving Hitler in power as chancellor and party leader. But I never studied the exact legal basis for Hitler's last 10 years in power.

Here in Australia, 6 prime ministers in 5 years. We vote every 3 years. Kevin Rudd, Julia Gillard, Kevin Rudd, Tony Abbott, Malcolm Turnbull and Scott Morrison.

@@antonydi Yes... he did. So Rudd, Gillard, Abbot, Turnbull and Morrison, 5 prime ministers in 5 years. You only get 6 if you act like there were two different Kevid Rudds who were both prime minister.

The Brazilian presidencial situation in November 1955 was a mess. President Getúlio Vargas had committed suicide in 1954. Vice-President João Café Filho assumed office, but had a heart attack on November 8th, 1955. The Speaker of the House Carlos Luz was sworn in as President, but then it was found that he was part of a plot for a military coup. Luz was impeached after only 3 days in power and the fourth in the line of succession, the President of the Senate Nereu Ramos, assumed office on November 11th, 1955. Café Filho left the hospital on November 21st, 1955, ready to go back to work as President. Out of fear he was also involved in the plot, the democratic segments of the military asked for Café Filho's loyalty. Just back from the hospital and with no idea of what they were referring to (his medical team decided to not allow him to receive any political news for fear he would have another heart attack), he refused to do so. As a response, the military put Café Filho under house arrest on that same day. He sent a letter to the Supreme Court, asking for his Habeas Corpus and for the reestablishment of his presidency. He was impeached on the early hours of November 22nd, 1955, and Ramos remained president for the remaining 2 months of Vargas' term. Turns out the question "Who was the President of Brazil in November 21st, 1955?" is a philosophical one. One legal expert of the time said that, if he were a Supreme Court Justice, he would reply to Café Filho's request with the shortest legal argument of all time: "I deny it because you request it", meaning no leader should request for his/her authority from anyone else. From a point of view based solely on the law, Café Filho was the President during the few hours between getting out of the hospital and being impeached, most of which he was under house arrest.

In Britain (although technically Scotland wasn't part of the union then) I guess the most famous short lived monarch is Lady Jane Grey, she was queen for 9 days between the death of Edward VI and Mary I. Edward was Henry VIII's only son, was king from the age of 9 to 15, Mary was Henry VIII's eldest daughter, and being Catholic meant the establishment didn't want her to be queen, edward left the crown to Jane (his distant cousin) in his will, decrying his half sisters Mary and Elisabeth (later Elizabeth I) as illegitimate. Mary's supporters arrested Jane and she was beheaded in the Tower of London aged 16. If you ever find yourself in the national gallery in London, I suggest you see the painting 'The Execution of Lady Jane Grey' by Paul Delaroche, a moving painting which just shows the madness around how these children were used as pawns by old men in their quest for power.

I'm just waiting for Australia to be mentioned and our strange ability to knife every PM in the back once they look like they might lose an election. Edit: Oh god that cartoon... I'd forgotten about that cartoon... a friend of mine is the producer of Media Watch and just had to go over that Serena Williams cartoon a Melbourne paper published. Australian political cartoons tend to be, well, brutal.

There was an entire exhibition of Aussie satirical cartoons in the Australian Parliament building when I visited (about 10 years ago now...oof). I gasped and laughed quite a bit at the bite. It's like they took the British satire and turned it up to 11, while dropping all pretenses of finesse and refinement on the way.

I know this is an old comment but I would put money on old ScoMo being kicked out within the next couple of months as it doesn't look like he'll win the 2022 elections.

Australia's shortest serving prime minister Frank Forde was in office for 7 days. His predecessor John Curtin died of a heart attack on July 5, 1945 and the Labor Party parliamentary caucus to elect a new leader wasn't scheduled to meet for another week. But since Australia was still busy fighting the Japanese during WWII the country still needed a prime minister to coordinate its war strategy until a permanent party leader was elected and sworn in. Then-deputy prime minister Forde was sworn in on July 6 with the intention of resigning if he wasn't elected as party leader. He didn't do much of significance and lost the leadership contest to Ben Chifley, who was sworn in as prime minister on July 13, 1945 after Forde resigned earlier that day. While it's easy to say that since Forde didn't do much or stay that long he doesn't really count as prime minister, because he was legitimately sworn in without the messy coup politics like you see in Africa and Latin America he's officially recognised as prime minister (not just as an interrim), and has an official prime ministerial portrait and everything.

In Barcelona, Spain, in 27 October 2017, for less than 8 seconds, Carles Puigdemont i Casamajó unilaterally declared independence of the Catalonian region from Spain, but suspended it right after. I thought this was gonna be here. There is even a nice meme circulating that shows separatists' faces who were watching live outside of the parliament, in a giant screen, who in turn were being recorded so we could see them on TV at home, changing expression very quickly from gleefully jumping and hugging each other and waving their flags and shouting, to looking at the screen with a gaping mouth and a disappointed face while swearing and in general freaking out.

@@laprankster3264 nah. the separatist movement here is wild. both sides are heavily polarized. they'll literally put riot police in the middle of the demonstrations to separate the separatist mass of people from the conservative mass. we also have field paramedics with kevlar suits and weighted tip lead batons who claim to be neutral but are clearly biased towards helping the separatist side.

In Mexico we had a president for 45 minutes Pedro Lascuráin but it was part of a coup d'état as they killed the president but before he was forced to resign, then the next person in the chain of power named Huerta (who planned the coup) minister so he would be president after he resigned.

William Henry Harrison in America only served 30 days before dying in office

After the Austro-Hungarian Empire fell, there were a bunch of prime ministers for Hungary during 1918 and 1919, the first one in office for 5 days. Other prime ministers only lasted for a few weeks to a few months. Hungary was just a dumpster fire during that time.

Almost all Italian political leaders since 1948 could classify for this list, since the average time in the office here in Italy is just over 1 year, with very few people having remained in power for more than 3 years. And forget a second mandate.

The transition from James K. Polk to Zachary Taylor as US President in 1849 created a one-day gap between the expiration of Polk's term on March 3 and Taylor's inauguration, postponed from March 4 to March 5 to accommodate a Sunday. The Vice-President's term had also expired, and at the time, the next office in line of succession was the president pro tempore of the Senate. Thus, occasionally David Rice Atchison is called president for one day. He is known to have slept through the entire day, having returned home from the Senate very late the night before and telling his housekeeeper not to disturb him.

About a year ago, on 27th October I think, Carles Puigdemont served as de facto president of the imaginary Republic of Catalunya when he proclaimed its independence and suspended it 30 seconds after. 2 days after he run from Spain, and all his mates are being judged for that.

Here in argentina, Cristina Kirchner resigned the presidency one day before Macri's inauguration ceremony, just because she doesn't wanted to give him the Baton and the Presidential Sash. As a Venezuelan, specially as a person who opposed Chavez since he gained power (i was 15 at the time), I have to say that your assesment of the venezuelan coup of 2002 was really good. I'm mildly surprised to find William Henry Harrison wasn't mentioned. Okay, he only lasted a month before kicking the bucket, but he'd basically managed to accomplish a great deal of nothing.

In Brazil, Zacaria de Góis first term as Prime Minister was the shortest premieship, while his party (the Progressive League) didnt get a majority and neither was the party with the most deputies (that was the liberal party), but due to negotiation he was able to be the Prime Minister, but was quickly removed in only 6 days.

Actually, (correct me if i'm wrong) the shortest presidency time goes to Carles Puigdemont with 8 seconds. According to Half as Interesting: "On October 1st, 2017, Catalonia held a referendum and overwhemingly voted to become independent from Spain. On October 10, the Catalan leader held a speech where he declared independence, saying 'I assume the mandate of the people for Catalonia to become an independent state in the shape of a republic.' But right after that, he asked Parliament to suspend his declaration of independence so that he could negotiate with Spain, giving the independent state of Catalonia a lifespan of exactly... *eight seconds.* "

At 4:28 we got something very special and specific: a parody of AVGN’s review of Earthbound, which itself contained a parody of Earthbound.

In Mexico we had a president, Pedro Lascuráin, who served for only 45 minutes before resigning in favor of Victoriano Huerta, the one who planned the coup against legal president Madero.

Malaysian second Yang DiPertuan Agong, Sultan Hisamuddin of Selangor, was the ruler that served the shortest term in Malaysia. He was elected on April 14, 1960 before dying on May 1, the same year. He ruled for 18 days

It is a constitutional gimmick: In Germany if the head of state, the federal president, resigns unscheduled the head of the federal council takes over temporarily until the next 'real' federal president is elected. This may last for up to 30 days. The head of the federal council is one of the 16 prime ministers of the federal states (Länder). Every year another prime minister becomes president of the federal council on a rotation system. You need a temporary acting replacement, because the federal president must sign state laws to become effective. This happened at least twice; as far as I know. (Other than that it's not a big deal, because the German federal president has very limited power compared to the chancellor.)

But the shortest ever time in power should technically go to Louis XIX of France. In 1830, the July Revolt forced the incumbent Bourbon King Charles X to abdicate in favour of his son, Prince Louis. But Louis, who technically became Louis XIX didn't want to rule and so abdicated just 20 minutes later in favour of his nephew Prince Henry (who came to seen as the next king Henry V by Royalists). But the real successor was of course Louis Phillippe of Orléans.

Great Video, I think the shortest ever leader was Chernov. Any way the history of Russia in 1917-18 is a complete mess. Firstly, Russia had this period where we were neither a republic or monarchy. So, technically speaking Russia had no leader. Next we had the declaration of the Russian Republic which was proclaimed in September, its official leader was Kerensky, though he wasn’t the actual president, this lasted for a few weeks. Next, there was a strange period after the October revolution in which the Bolsheviks had de facto power, yet the de jure power was vested in the Constituent assembly. There was also a strange period in which the Constituent Assembly declared the official constitution and was de jure the official government of Russia, tho it was soon dissolved (in a few hours), Even though there was no presidential elections, by default the de jure leader was Victor Chernov, becoming the leader of the shortest country ever.

In Ecuador we had President Rosalía Arteaga, who was president four 5 days, that was our shortest serving president, an actually our first and only female president

On February 1st, 1908 King Carlos of Portugal was on a royal tour with his son, Crown Prince Luis Filipe when they were assassinated. King Carlos died immediately and his son died 30 minutes later on the way to the hospital from blood loss. At the time, when a king died his predecessor became the reining king immediately after the former king died, so for 30 minutes, Luis Filipe was the king of Portugal.

In Mexico, in February 1913, General Victoriano Huerta killed President Madero and Vicepresident Pino Suárez, making the current Minister of Foreign Relations, Pedro Lascurain president. As a hostage of Huerta, his only two acts as president were naming Huerta Ministry of Government (therefore, next in succession), and resigning. Total time: 45 minutes.

Italy technically had no leader for over a year, from 1945 to 1946, until in the 10th of June 1946 the results of the referendum were published and the Republic of Italy was declared.

In my country, Paraguay, the shortest serving president was Facundo Machaín. He took office on the sunset of August 31, 1870, but 12 hours later he was overthrew from power without even exercising it, at dawn on September 1, 1870. He was also the youngest president of Paraguay, he was 25 years old when he was appointed to the presidency.

Louis reigned for only 20 minutes (the shortest reign ever recorded), and Henri for a week.

I had to analyse the Bill Leak cartoon in English just earlier this year.

During the collapse of the USSR there was an event called "GKChP uprising". On the 18th of August,1991 Vice President and some other guys has created "The State Committee on the State of Emergency". This organization was in power almost for 3 days and surrendered pretty quickly. They have tried to arrest Gorbachev and have entered tanks in Moscow.

I have heard of this event, albeit as the "1991 August Coup". This 3-day "government" sped up the dissolution of the Soviet Union, so there seems to be some irony to the story of this failed attempt to preserve the USSR. Now, the red-flag-waving Soviet people are largely the stuff of history and 30-to-70-year-outdated American pop culture (and that's an American talking!).
