World Famous Permaculture Property Tour - David Holmgren and Su Dennett's Melliodora
In Episode 2 of Permaculture Tours, we visit Melliodora, the beautiful home of David Holmgren and Su Dennett in Victoria, Australia. David is the co-originator of the permaculture concept and this tour offers an insight into how he and Su have designed their home and gardens according to permaculture design principles.
Come and take a tour through the four zones that make up their 1-hectare property - vegetable gardens, fruit trees, geese, goats and chickens, a tiny house, and a very cool “cool cupboard” in the kitchen!

Hello , if possible could you share the design of permaculture farm aswell which would act as a guide to people who are new to permaculture like myself cause i believe design is the most important thing in permaculture to make it sustainable
I was going to do this right out of high school, or grade 12. Had the money saved for a good start. Then reality, life, and others' expectations started to set in on me. So I went to college to do the "correct" thing. My life is a wreck now. Follow your gut instinct. Don't let others sway your opinion if you are set on what YOU want to do. The world needs more of these types of human habitats. May the creator and company bless you all.

It's never too late! I gladly listened to my gut and decided not to go to college and start a permaculture farm but it wasn't easy especially because of the expectations of other people and the fear that I won't be taken seriously. I wish everyone could just do whatever they want without this stupid fear.

Education does not always means expensive college degrees but what you can apply. If you like permaculture then visit local permaculture farms and networks. Finance small property and scale small to large. I work as lender and handling loan for small farm and residential.
Omg we are all wasting our lives. Thank you thank you Happen Films for showing us an alternative to how we were raised and told what to value - the 9-5, consuming , money, the grind etc. Absolutely this is what we should all be doing. How wonderful it would be to live sustainably and as a community sharing our resources.

@@debasishghoshsays ok wise guy. delight us with your explanation
The best at min. 3:40 is something you can do right away: dishrack over sink, dishes dripping go directly to rack where they will dry after they are washed. So intelligent.
10:58 "We don't need huge numbers of people to change behavior, to make a big impact. That, I think, has always been underestimated." Great statement. It reminds me of Pam Warhurst and the Incredible Edible Network's idea that small actions matter. Let's start, each of us, today.

@Was Guilty If you realy do effectively operate a small farm you should already know some things. Not every one is a farmer or will farm. OK your right. Big busness farming is destructive to the land and environment. It is wasteful of resources. It relies on huge energy inputs to operate. When farms are monopolized, the people have little choice but to pay what is asked and eat whatever is avalable. Not good. Family farming is good for all of us but is being discouraged. Look at Urban Growth Boundaries in Oregon. No land evaluation was made. Some of the best farm land became subdivisions and malls. Every few years some more of the best farm land is added to the urban growth areas. Much of the less valuable for farming land can't be used for homes, it's outside an arbitrarily boundry. If you do have farm land you can't live on it unless you make what the government thinks is enough money to justify it. That is the effective end of new small famliy farms as the existing farms go large land owners.

@Was Guilty but you can live a much lower impact life without farming everything. Not everyone should farm, but we need to stop the endless consumerism

Every little act counts, it is the thoughts behind it that makes it powerful.
Su, very wise and precise and why not, Good things, when short, are twice as good: "you shouldn't think that you have to own a piece of land to feel that you're part of it and to feel duty towards that piece of land; to try to understand its needs and how they work in accordance with your needs". Really grateful to you.
I wanna quit my city life to this peaceful life. Live n love with nature. What a wonderful life.
These types of people are my favorite
Growing up in Australia, I was fortunate to discover permaculture at a young age. David and Bill Mollison were the founding fathers of permaculture. Their wisdom and foresight has benefited and inspired so many.
These films inspired me ten years ago, and they continue to inspire me today.
we moved in our first home 2 yrs ago, and since then i have been gardening indoors and how I love how my greens have been striving even in the coldest of the winter, they take care of me and how i love taking care of them.. something about taking care of plants give you this fulfillment that no other amount of luxuries in the world could ever give you.. we are nearing to our phase of finding our forever retirement home, by 37 we will be able to finally do this - where we can permanently apply permaculture and pass this beautiful life and habitat to our young ones. thank you for showing how beautiful this life is to the world.
I agree: Social Permaculture is the most important field to develop right now. Most of the technical aspects we have already dealt with. The thing now is how we get this to the public.

Are they a couple? If so, I hope she's actually older and doesn't just look older. That would suck. When I was younger I used to love it when people said I looked older than I was. Especially when I could drink in the pub at 16 (they weren't strict about ID back then.) and people thought I was 18. However, now that I'm 52, looking older than what you are is most definitely not fun!

It takes a long time to get to this point and we could all learn from their lessons. Everyone can apply permaculture principles in their living space, even in inner city areas. A pot of veges, growing on the balcony, is a start. Some herbs growing on your window sill. Watercress growing in your bathroom. It will bring you joy !
I had the pleasure of hanging out with Su and David my last year living in the country north of Melbourne. We met at an event we were speaking at and immediately were drawn to each other's work and perspective. I have so much admiration and respect for their work and how they live it.

So inspiring. I wish I could be like you. For me I try to maximize what I have now. Super small house 60m2 + very small garden 40m2 (considered I'm kind of 'lucky' because most of my neighbour only have 10m2 garden in my block). I try to grow as much as possible with the space I have
I like to believe with the right community something like this will eventually be possible for my disabled self (I have EDS). I'm already teaching my friends and flatmates about forraging and permaculture gardening and am already seeing a drop in our living expenses because of the food I gather and grow
so blessed that I grow up in the countryside 🏞

4:49 so the grapevine arbor on the north side is a critically important part of the shading structure, which is there in the summer and the autumn, but not there in the spring and winter - so works with the passive solar design 6:37 animals that are giving you a service, you must also provide a service for them
