I can't help but wonder if Native American horse racing gets your blood running hotter than the countless number of horses put down everyday in other non-Native races. As far as other comments some are supportive and some aren't, but focusing on them as part of your argument only suggests that you hope I will subscribe to group think instead of what I have seen with my own eyes in this video.

That's an interesting comment. How do you think the people got all the way from the east coast to California before the invention of tains and automobiles? They crossed rivers on horseback and in horsedrawn wagons, that is, if they were lucky enough to own them. It did not seem that the horses were in any distress at the end of the race. Horses can and do run on hills and swim in water.

Obviously putting a horse thru this for the tradition of it is "caring of the animal as it's highest level" This is one tradition they definitely could loose. Or maybe the guys could leave the horses out of it and run by themselves with someone hitting them with a stick for more speed.

Running down a steep hill like that, and making them put all that pressure on their legs can cause serious lameness and damage. Horses are not big and bad beasts that can barely get hurt. It's quite the opposite. They're fragile animals.

This is absolutely disgusting and horrible. Too many horses have died from this stupid 'tradition'. These idiots do not have a care in the world about these poor horses by watching the way they are whipping the hell out of them with two hands and shouting at them, this needs to be illegal.

I didn't see any injuries in this particular video. You must be halucinating if you saw someone get injured in this video that we are commenting on. Have your noggin checked. While you're at it I dare you to take your protest to Churchill Downs where champion horses end up having to be put down every year. But you probably think that type of racing is more "civilized" don't you?

if anybody has ever seen the famous pic of the cavalry rider going down a steep hill, THIS isn't anything different than what the cavalry did. yes some horses and people get hurt but in general they are doing a pretty good job keeping that hill well maintained so accidents don't happen.

The cavalry was from middle ages to around the 20th century first of all so even if the Calvary were still around, it would be looked down upon. And second, 15 or more, horse have died in these races not to mention countless injuries.

They can be. But not as much as you think. A horse is actually more sensitive than a human. Our epidermis in width is about 0.8 cm thick. While a horse's epidermis is 0.5 cm thick. There has also been a graph released by vet studies that horses have a vast amount of more nerve endings than humans. So there you go. They're not incredibly tough.

Lots of name calling on here and I know emotions run deep, but to clear up a few things: I don't see how this is tradition because a WHITE man named Claire Pentz created this race in 1935 to promote the rodeo, so its not an ancient native tradition.

Yes they were scared if horses at first when they first came to America, but the Natives over time connected them to spirituality, and considered them family members. And I'm pretty sure actual Native Americans would find this horrible and an insult to their culture. So for people to claim this as tradition of Native Americans is pretty absurd.
