World Circumnavigation Country #2 Jamaica - Port Antonio | Ep 44

Last week we sailed from Georgetown, Bahamas to Port Antonio, Jamaica our SECOND country on our world navigation. We stayed at a marina for the first time in 4 months due to the cost of anchoring was almost as much as the marina. We covered a lot in 9 days. By renting a car we were able to drive to Dunns River Falls in Ochos Rios, explore the Blue Mountains including touring a coffee plantation and see one of the prettiest beaches in all of Jamaica at Boston Beach.
Follow our families journey as we plan to Circumnavigate the Globe in 3-4 years on a budget of $4,300/mo. We plan to leave the US in October 2023 and visit 26 countries and 6 continents.

About 40 years ago when our two sons were Davis‘s age, we took a big trip to the national parks out west. Instead of devices, they each had books which they were so totally into we had to almost force them to look out the windows. Finally got to the point where, when we mentioned the view, they would say ooh and aw, never even take their eyes off their book.

We are becoming your biggest fans now. I guess leaving a comment on one of your videos tips us that way. We watch them as a family on Sunday mornings over coffee and it's our favorite thing. Something we discussed while watching today that I wanted to share: we love watching you ease into boat life because it's something we want to do in the next few years and wonder how hard it is, how do new people figure all this stuff out (with kid in tow too!). The magic you have going for you is bringing us along as you learn it all. Our favorite parts are watching you learn how to do the boat stuff (and less about the tourist stuff). Just feedback from one family. It's been awesome watching you try to fix things, failing, learning...understanding how long it takes to get stuff done, see how hard it was to hoist the sail...and even just docking in the marina! We were celebrating for you as you did it. 💪And Rob celebrating you was so sweet. ♥Also, just noticed you stated your budget of $4,300 a month in your video caption! AWESOME. It would be amazing to know how you're doing with that.

Wow! Thank you very much! Rob & I used to have the same Sunday morning routine for years! I want to show all the thing I had questions about - like how do you meet neighbors in an anchorage or what to bring for sundowners, what’s the check in process for each country and how many times are we really fixing things. It’s not easy watching back harsh words or stress but I hope it allows others to see what it’s really like. We appreciate you following along!!

I enjoyed watching this. Portie is my Fav location on my island. My family been has been frequenting Portie since the 1970's. It is where we spend long weekends and holidays since I was a child and now where I take my family. It is relaxing, not too Touristy and lots of off the beaten path places to explore. There are certain experiences in life that you lock away for a rainy miserable day, experiences you will never forget and never want to forget because it warms your heart and take you to that happy place. Well my entire experience in Portland is filled with nothing but happy memories and I am happy you got to experience it. Safe Journeys and happy travels.

I don’t care how the parish council and the tourist board tries to spin this. The town is rundown and in need of proper planning and restoration back to its original state. To make it truly rustic and full of old world charm. I get scared when Jamaicans use the word development.

It is so good to see you enjoying my home country of Jamaica, and in one of the nicer parishes(our version of a state) Portland, specifically Port Antonio, aka Portie the capital. Knowing the foods are unfamiliar and takes some time to get used to, along with the cringe moments when Jamaicans hear you mispronounce, describe an item incorrectly, or eat it in a way we would find strange, yet with time you learn. The Jamaican motto is "Out of Many, One People", so while deeply rooted in African culture, it is a combination of many cultures and global influence. For example, the Jamaican apple originated from Malaysia and our left-handed style of driving was handed down through our British colonial past. We look forward to the next visit and more happy exploring, along with happy sailing.

Nxt time if u see those apples again, just wash it and bite into it skin on. However, depending on the ripeness of it, the skin will either be very sweet or a little bit sour. The darker the red, the sweeter it will be. The red can be just the typical red, or so dark it looks like burgundy, or like a purple-ish red. When this happens, you have to try get to them before the birds do, because they mostly only eat them when they hv a dark red skin because they are sweeter at that time.

Jamaica is a British colony so they drive on the left side as if you were driving in England. If you happen to visit again in the future just be prepared with what you want!

Really enjoyed the video. How well-behaved boats kids are. Its so good for them to have a real life and learn instead of learning form a teacher that also diid not have experience. The area you drive through is like some areas in Europe, although no palm trees there. but the small steep roads in villages, very much Luxembourg, the Ardennes and some French areas. You drink diet coke? oeff, you better drink real coke (or obviously something else) and look at the rest of your diet. diet coke is nothing less but extremely bad. all alternative to sugars effect your cognitive thinking. And as for losing weight? it does not work. Just my five cents. Hapy sailing

  • @SailingParadiseFalls

We have found boat kids are more mature for their age than land based kids. They are given hefty responsibilities earlier in life and are able to deal with change. Davis has a hard time with change, but it's slowly sinking in that plans change in a heartbeat when you are on the ocean. You have to adapt and move with the situation and the journey and end result may not be what you originally planned. For instance, Jamaica was not an intended destination, but more of a stop over for weather!
