    Nice - I use a Dremel with a metal cutting Wheel Disc. I do cut sometimes when the edge will be hidden. Beveled an edge once (once - lol) with a die cutter.

    Thank you for making this video! Would you not recommend using a hole punch prong thing to make the holes? Is the calcium too strong. I have some I want to use, but don't want to screw it up since it is expensive.

    I need to learn more. I’ve always wanted to make a card wallet out of stingray. But should probably practice on regular leather first.

    the method of construction is the same, it’s just the cutting and finishing of the stingray that’s so time-consuming. Make Supply Leather has some great free templates to acquire and practice with. best of luck 🤞🏾

    To put Shagreen on a wallet , could I contact cement a peice to the exterior in a folded position, or should I bond it to the exterior peice in a flat position prior to stitching the wallet?

    How do we dye stingray leather ourselves? I’m looking to dye a bright blue stingray leather into black or dark brown. Will the dye also dye the calcium nodules ?

  • @JRenardLeatherCo

    @JRenardLeatherCo

    Жыл бұрын

    i dyed a stingray that was shagreen, vice pearl finished. it worked quite well. HOWEVER, i believe that it worked because the inside of the nodule was exposed because of the sanding to make it shagreen, as the due penetrated very easily. i think it would be different on a pearl finish.

    Kinda off topic, I'm wondering what tools to use to create brogues in leather goods?? Great show, Cool Mask!

  • @JRenardLeatherCo

    either a rotary hole punch hand tool, or an individual punch hand tool. the rotary hand tool is great because it has multiple sizes on one tool, but they normally only punch within 1-1.5 inches in from the edge. individual hand punch tools are better for broguing further in on a piece and you’ll also have other shapes like ovals, hearts, and stars available to you too for an extra bit of flare. BUT, switching between tools, vice rotating a wheel is a notable consideration.

    as far as i've been able to tell, unless someone has a tanned and bleached hide (called a crust), the only way to add color to stingray hide is to paint it.

  • @JRenardLeatherCo

    @JRenardLeatherCo

    i purposely buy the hides w/o the diamond shape now. i have to cut from the middle of the hide to provide a customer with something that is merely something the tannery chooses to do. if customers really want the diamond, i charge an extra $50 for my pain & suffering😆
