Great video. I’m trying to culture a flightless mutation into a wild caught drosophila species. I have several species now but this wild type that I have yet to identify has a huge larval stage. My F1 generation is in pupa form right now. This video will help me sort my cultures. Thanks!!

Hi there, I would like to do something like this with my Biology students and this was very helpful. I'm wondering how long you leave them in the culture tube to reproduce? How does that process work? Thanks!

Yeah so much fun if you don't mind the learning curve (some cultures might mold over, some flies will escape, etc.). Can email me (think email is in contact info for more specifics). I would say 2 - 3 weeks after putting males and females together (and eventally removing them) you'll have the next generation in adult form.

No, "mutant" is a more general term for any individual who has any change that makes him or her different from others in the population. Vestigial flies have a particular mutation that gives them small, nonfunctional wings. But there are lots of other mutations that are possible to observe in fruit flies.

The nodding in the presentation like we are gossiping about fruit flies and their familial lies!
