I use overtime to my advantage. I don’t like when employers borderline harass you or try to make you feel bad for not picking up overtime. But I like that in nursing there’s ALWAYS the opportunity for overtime it can help you get ahead on things and you can definitely use it to your advantage/goals but agree with you on maintaining work life balance

It is important to know your limits. Glad to hear you use it strategically. I hate the harassment/ guilt about doing it as well. I plan for floats rather than giving my team a hard time. If the want OT, they come to me and I reduce the float requests. #SimTribe

As a security officer most of the time overtime is mandatory. However if a person works two jobs then 1 company can't give too much overtime to it's employee.

Mental health nurse here.... the hospital I’m employed at offers incentive (time and 1/2+10) due to being short staffed... we also get mandated to work 16 hour shifts from time to time. The money is great and easy to get addicted to, however, the work is both physically and mentally draining. Because of the nice checks, I would pick up incentive shift all the time, but be too tired to do anything on my days off. Now I only pick them up for special occasions or when I want to make a big purchase.

Girl! I can't believe you got your wisdom teeth out the day before thanksgiving! But yeah I work OT. When I was a CNA and in nursing pre-reqs, I literally worked 60+ hours every single week. The bonuses were so good. Now that I'm an LPN, I try to only work 32-40 hours since I'm in an ADN program, but I have been forced to work OT every week lately bc of the pandemic. So many nurses have quit or they have gotten sick. And we have no bonuses. I am so burned out lately with working full time and going to school, but I live by myself so I have lots of bills to pay. And like you, I'm trying to buy a house soon. It'll all be worth it someday. I graduate with my RN in May.

My train of thought is that I worked in the Philippines for 2 years and London, UK for 3 years before working as an ICU nurse in the US. Yes I will definitely work overtime depending on the reason. Right now I’m in a crisis contract and I’m doing 4 days a week 12 hours of course and the pay is great I do not think I will do it long term though. But as long as the rates are out here I plan to do it when I can so I can also save and invest!!!!! Get your money boo!!!!!!

I’ve noticed that overtime really only makes sense for me up to a certain extent. Generally I find that I make the most money if I do 4 shifts per week, maybe I can even pull off 5 one week (you know in a biweekly pay check). I feel that if I do more than that I end up giving most of the money from the shift right back to taxes so it becomes pointless unless their giving our a good incentive like double time or something.

I’m in nursing school and I have one more semester left but I work as an evening receptionist at a nursing home and sometimes I work overtime. I would work 14 hour shifts from time to time and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with picking up a little overtime, but I do believe that there should be a limit to how much u work if that makes sense. I know when I become a nurse I wouldn’t mind working 3-4 12 hour shifts, but I refuse to work more than that lol. I knew a nurse who worked 6 12’s and I don’t know how she did that, it’s just mentally, and physically draining..

I don't work overtime at my full time job because it's taxes. I am a PACU nurse and we have the option to work 3/12s. .4/10s..or 5/8s off on weekends except for taking call once every 6 weeks. I also work for a local pre diem travel nurse agency. I can pick up daily travel shifts. So l could literally pick up a 6-8 hour daily local travel shift and make like 800 bucks (depending on the assignment) in one shift no taxes taken out. However l do have additional taxes taken from my full time job. For me that's the better option because l can sign up for per diem travel shift 24 hours in advance. I only pick up minimum 2 extra days a month and make 1400-1600 extra. If the shift gets canceled l still get paid.

I used to work at a SNF and the only way to really make any money was to pull doubles. So I used to do back to back doubles. The pay was so low that overtime was the only way to pay the bills. Not to mention some days there was no relief and management didn't step in.... Finally left there after realizing that hard workers get the shit stick and no respect. 🤷🏾‍♀️

I work overtime every week and I hate it because its not even my choice most of the time. I work in a clinic rather than a hospital and we are short staffed with way too many patients per nurse so with taking care of them, charting and doing small little chores around the clinic, I'm being overworked every week and come home late almost everyday. I prefer a work/life balance bc personally idt its worth it
