For me, AMC corporate and their policies were really strict and in many ways kinda felt like they forced a lot on customers. Coupled with slashed benefits from the carmike days (we went from 4 free movies and free concessions to 2 free movies and half priced concessins) and weak pay for a lot more work and expectations it was time to dip. But as a first job in high school it had its moments and there was a period of time from august 2016-April 2017 where I actually looked forward to it because everyone from managers to crew was fun to work with. It also got me used to being on my feet and having to hustle for long hours at a time which has come into play with in film on sets.

Hypothetically you could bring you plus 3 others and all get in for free, which is what made it worthwhile. i'd bring my friends/family often because we would all be in free w/ free drinks and food. naturally they limited that to 2 tickets, not that i ever adhered to that.

AMC was one of my first jobs during my Sr. year of HS (13 years ago now) and it was def one of my favorites, at least at the start. I was also a film person and the free movies, early screenings, free friend ticket, and half price concessions were all amazing perks for me, and are great perks for any HS kid. I'm not sure it would be sustainable had I stuck with them through college though. Initially, the job was great. We had some great managers and supervisors, one of them had me fast tracked for a booth and supervisor position once I turned 18, but that year was when they replaced all the projectors with digital and it happened just before I was supposed to start training. The good manager (the guy who hired me) left the company shortly there after and the two new managers they hired were awful and played favorites. I was about to start as a supervisor but I got secret shoppered one of my last nights as crew. I jumped in to help concession and didn't upsell someone during the rush, and they were a secret shopper. I was supposed to be fired but instead I lost the supervisor promotion and took a writeup. They started messing with my hours and putting me exclusively in concession, which is where my love for the place began to slip. A few weeks after, the chick they promoted instead of me told me and two others that we got cut early bc it was slow, and so we left. Turns out, they got hit hard with a rush just before close and instead of fessing up to it, she told the closing manager that we must have left without checking out. All 3 of us got write ups for it. At this point, I was getting scheduled once per week, most of my friends had already quit, and management was horrible, so as soon as I got a new job, I quit without notice. It was a fun time for a while, made some good friends I kept in contact with for years after, and a lot of it I look fondly back on. My biggest regret is I never got to run booth. A great job if you're younger and don't have a lot of responsibilities, enjoy film, and like free movies. Def not a career tho.

Was thinking about going back and this just reminded me of why I didn’t go back after being begged to after the re opening of theaters during the pandemic

I worked there from 2013-2019. 2 yrs crew, 3 sup, 2 manager. And the general manager is what makes it or breaks it. My first gm was really committed to the entertainment business, and my second gm just wanted everyone to kiss his ass. It’s a fun job coming out of hs or if youre in college. They expect you to have open availability 2/3 weekend days for the most part and the rest of the week is more open to flexibility. They really try to push you to sign people up for the membership. Before the company went public, you’d get your 8hrs and afterwards they try to “save” money at the cost of employees. So they’ll schedule you less than 7.5 hours so by law they don’t have to give you a break. Or they’ll overlap shifts in each department, so when the closer for the night comes in and the mid shift employee will get sent home depending on business levels. But you’ll meet some great people, I’m still friends with most of my hiring group from 2013 lol. I left due to not seeing eye to eye with the general manger.

I was a Crew member for about 7 months, overall the job was a wonderful experience. I even got employee of the month the first month I was there because my first GM was super supportive of me and I was a hard worker when she was there. I cant speak for every theater, but where I worked we got along with our fellow crew members very well, we were like family. However, Management at my theater was terrible. After one specific supervisor got promoted to manager, he dated a crew lead for a while and favored her and her friends who also worked there. They could get away with anything, while he would write me and a few others up constantly. The General Manager was very helpful and encouraging towards me but then she resigned and we got a new GM who basically was convinced by management who hated me that I was a bad employee. This resulted in constant write ups for performance so they could say I didn't do something right and they can write me up whenever they want. My mental health was going down as well so I would have to call out often (literally for my own safety) and they didn't care. These call outs and a no call no show (major food poisoning) lead to my termination. They would write me up a lot to have a case against me so I cannot claim wrongful termination. I can't even go to HR because HR reps are close to my managers and they would not care... I was going to resign anyway but at least I was able to move on. I loved the job itself but it can be stressful, especially on weekends and when major movies release. Guests would often cuss you out and harass you for things that are not your fault (especially food and drink prices). The benefits were awesome and we would even get to see movies before they release at pre-screenings for employees. My fellow crew members were like family, and we would always work as a team. Even though I got fired, I still am friends with lots of my co workers outside of work. Also at work, I was great with customer service and registers and dealing with guest complaints and I think that was my strongest part. Customers can be challenging, especially when they are mad at you, or if they are being disruptive during a movie or leave a big mess behind. Customers being disruptive in theaters was very common, and I have had to stop teens from being noisy to stopping a organized sex activity involving three couples during a movie. Cleaning up after customers can be disgusting, including god knows what is in the napkins they leave in cup holders, cleaning vomit, feces off the floor, urine (yes in a theater), and cleaning up after adults who pleased themselves. If you want to apply to AMC, go for it. If you passed the interview, accept the offer of employment. Just do your best, even if you couldn't keep up with shifts like I did. However, I agree that we are underpaid and overworked. The pay was terrible for all roles even managers couldn't make a live-able wage. The job was a great experience and when I get my car I hope to work for another theater brand, because I just love the environment.

@@leonardoa4820 No not really. It’s a lot of the basic questions. If you answer them well, you will most likely be offered the job on the spot and not wait for a call, like what happened to me. Overall, It comes down to the job itself. Find out who the good managers are. Get advice from other crew members, and know who your GM is. I would say find if there are crew members, or leads that are in cliques. Usually if they are on the managers side it’s best to hang out with them but if they are toxic, just leave them. I didn’t hang out with them much and got along well with other co-workers. Of course the managers didn’t like that and if the GM doesnt do their job right they can manage to get you out. Just be careful, and have fun at work. It’s a fun but wild job, especially when you’re an usher. :)

Hey how’s it going, I just sent in my application to work at an amc in my area. The question I wanted to ask was what clothing would you recommend to the interview?

I used to work at a theatre called CinemaStar. Made it to the supervisor position. Even though I somewhat loathed it, I must admit that I miss it...somewhat. The reason why I say this is that there are a number of areas where I could have been a better employee overall. However, some of the guests became my greatest lifelong friends! I, to this day, have no idea what I did for them. They were just such great people, in the end.

I worked at AMC for one summer from may-august in 2021. I didn't hate it but I didn't love it enough to ever go back. The pay sucked especially for the hours, I worked F&B exclusively and would be there from before opening until concessions closed. Since I was over 18 I was not prioritized for breaks and because of how young my co-workers were I would almost never get one since someone over 16 had to be behind the bar at all times. I would also have to stay late to close even if I wasn't scheduled. My co-workers were nice and I genuinely enjoyed working with them but the GM got under my skin. Towards the end of my time there the oven that cooked the pretzel bites almost fell on top of me because it was placed on a rusted wheeled refrigerator instead of a proper surface. The impact was enough to completely crush the oven. I only got a scratch on my arm but I did not fill out any kind of employee injury form, I thought this was odd because I had filled out a few for some other minor cuts and burns that I got on the job. The only thing my GM said to be was "go get a broom" so I could clean up the mess that the oven made. This was 20 minutes before we opened and the oven fell in front of a register my 14 year old co-worker would have been working at that day. I understand accidents happen but I really feel that this was a preventable, if it had happened at any other time of day it could have gone way worse. Had the oven been placed on a proper table it wouldn't have happened at all. Obviously my experience isn't everyone's and my AMC could be an outlier but I don't think I will ever see the company in the same light again.

I worked there for 3.5 years. Pros is I was younger. Met who would be my girlfriend of 4 years there. Made some good friends. Easy to do so there too (make new friends). Pay is horribly low, even Managers make lower than other like retail managers. Super rude and aggressive customers…box office, usher, and concessions, I was yelled at. I used to prank call some rude guests from a random VPN. The high pressure to upsell the dumb stubs card is horrible. AMC supposedly “loves your smile” but they want us to purge every dime we can out of them. Your General Manager makes or break your experience, for better or worse, there’s no true way to avoid him or her.

Management positions are just awful you made the right decision turning it down

Copying this from my post... and it's a good response to yours: I also appreciated that I could get extra hours whenever I wanted them, because I knew that the theater would be busy and they would not have enough staffing. I would go in during a busier time with my uniform in my hand and say, "Hey, i'm free, do you need me?" And they would always, desperately tell me to clock in and hurry. 😁 🤑 Ka-ching. This usually works on weekends evenings and busy holidays... But of course, what that means is you're giving up your free time. You want the money? Do this trick. It worked for me nearly all the time.

Correct, I believe it's capped at 7 to ensure adequate time for homework and sleep. You should have a pretty flexible availability then being homeschooled; that will be to your advantage at the theater Tryston.

Could you explain more the "free movie benfit" how did that work? Like do you need to wait a certain amount time before can see it free as let say you go to another AMC theater one down the road can you get free movies at that one also or just the theater you work at?

Good question! Shortly after you get hired you'll be able to set up your stubs account, which is AMC's reward program. You'll have a "cast" account, for employees, so any time you want to watch a movie (at any amc across the country) you just show them your account on your phone app and that's how they see you're staff

That changed, AMC now requires everyone to use their OnePass benefit, you get 50% off food but now in order to see the movie you want, you have to wait until two hours before the showtime in order to get tickets. You probably already know this but once the movie gets full you will have to pick a different showing or time. This means in order to see a movie at 10pm, you have to wait until 8 to get the tickets.

The pay suckś, that’s the biggest problem, even for “managers” at AMC the pay is not good. Plus the really cheaped out, even before the pandemic, canceling the nighttime cleaning crews and making employees clean up before they leave for the night. I definitely wouldn’t recommend anyone work there, other than a part time HS job but that’s it.

Here another question always wonder what theaters do let say it very slow day as you have no customers inside a certain movie theater. Do you guys still "play the movie" in an empty theater or just cancel it?

Showtimes are programmed for a full week's worth in advance, so each showing is already scheduled and just plays off of a scheduled calendar time. We don't have to manually push start and stop; everything is automatically done. So if no one shows up to a particular movie you could stop it and just skip for the next scheduled showing to play when it's time, but most of the time its just left to play through by itself. If it's the last one of the night and it's empty we'll normally skip it just so we can get out a little faster. No point in waiting on a movie to end if no one is in there.

Hello, I just start my first training jobs for 8hrs tomorrow and I just let’s my manager know to change my hrs time but I’m not sure if they can change it because I’m start training tomorrow afternoon plus my real schedule is this Friday for 4 days straight and I still want same different time of my hrs for 7hrs the rest of my schedule instead 8hr. Do you think they can change fast my schedule since tomorrow I start?

Does anyone have any experience as someone whos recovering from an injury or who is disabled? I broke my foot 4 months ago and just got my walking boot off around 3 weeks ago. I can walk, but stairs are hard and my foot hurts after standing for more than an hour-two. Do you know if there are any possibilities for accomodations, such as a stool to sit at the counter or ticket checker area? I know this video was posted a while ago, but if anyone who has worked there could help out I'd greatly appreciate it!

If you can prove to them you're more useful as an usher then I'm sure you can talk them into just letting you usher instead. But that'll probably depend on their other staffing and who they really need (for example they may have plenty of good ushers and are looking to hire more people for box office specifically).

At the moment I watched this Im currently working at AMC Theaters in my local area and when I noticed the part on the onboarding in-house training it said “diversity and inclusion” and that’s sending me a red flag about the business. Next red flag was the fact the GM mentioned Latinx (which for those who don’t know is offensive to Hispanic community and I know this because I never heard of it until 2022 and I worked with a lot of Hispanics at my other job and I asked them if they found it offensive). I’m already second guessing my job there and I have only just started.

I joined AMC in October of last year and just quit two days ago. It was the best thing I’ve ever done. I loved talking to guests about movies, as I was a film student ; but working at a flagship location in NYC gets hard. Guests lose their heads when they enter a theater and some have no respect. Some of the CL’s and other higher ups were okay but in total they lacked care from basic things such as checking emails. As well as promoting horrible people with nasty attitudes ; flat out saying they’re just going to porter around and not really work. The lack of hours as well was excruciating. Having one day a week and being paid $200 EVERY TWO WEEKS in NY is not livable. I appreciate the coworkers and the fun that I did have during the job. But corporate sucks, their software sucks, their “benefits” suck (part time, you don’t traditional benefits) and their system of mass hiring is the reason why their in the red as company. sorry for the rant.

So I assume you went to crew lead, and then supervisor? I currently work at a theater, and actually have my crew lead interview tomorrow! Any tips would be much appreciated!!

As an AMC Classic worker, I believe I can say that AMC does not care at all about their classic locations at all. They'll just let them run down until it's eventually deemed necessary to shut them down.

as of retaliation on me they made me usher on the busy days all by myself. one time aka last shift they assigned me concessions and had a write up. i literally argued with management after they denied me with coverage or any help to get through with my issues i had a family member in the hospital, i was dropped off to have them borrow my car, literally they cut me after i said i can’t go home after starting 2 hours, that flexible schedule crap is just what i said crap, they cut all the time, don’t work any. please avoid them all cost

Made $25/hr in an office setting. I just can't do it anymore. I am fried. I interview for an asst. manager position at my local cinema in 2 days. Pay is $13-14/hour. Ouch, but looking to get something out of this job, more than money. Satisfaction is important.

Hey! I started working at AMC last September and I felt the same way. I thought it would be really hard and it would take a really long time to get to know how to do everything. But, after getting hired and working with some great people, I realized that everything would be completely fine. After about 4 months as crew, I learned basically everything there was to know about the crew position and I eventually got a promotion to a team lead. For the interview, I was very nervous and I thought I did bad, but it was fine and I still got hired because they basically hire anyone. I would definitely suggest to prepare answers for the questions provided in the video as they were in my interview, but overall just try and come up with an answer for everything and you should be fine. Good luck on the interview and if you get hired, try to enjoy the job and take advantage of your benefits if you’re a movie person!

I'm a facilities manager but I have two buildings one of the classic and the others are regular just AMC I'm also fixing to turn 54 next month in September and the other four AMC's in the area where I live they have one facilities manager and they only take care of one building but I have to take care of two buildings and drive to two buildings and yet they make as much as I do that's the only big downfall that I have so far and I've been with the company almost 4 years started out as crew I enjoy it I like the free movies but there is things that I don't enjoy about AMC the money could be better especially for me since I have two buildings our budget just sucks we can't get the money we need to keep the building the way it needs to be and I'm sure it's not just where I'm at I'm sure it's all over

It varies per District (like many large business do). When I left they started there 2 year restructuring for the future of AMC. Which was a polite way of saying they were merging jobs and paying less for some. Like with the Facilities Managers they were moving it to 1 per 4 theaters (or there likes); phasing out supervisors for “crew leads” (less pay); cut away projectionist and made it Managers job. Theaters aren’t dying (at least anytime soon) but the kingdom is very likely going to keep increasingly shrinking.

It depends but probably a few days to a week on average. You can call the theatre or go up there and give them your name and let them know you're still interested. If they like your application they'll give you a call back.

You shouldn't need anything for the interview unless you have a resume. Once you've been extended an offer and you're going through the onboarding, they'll provide the paperwork for you to fill out and you just need to bring proof of citizenship.

If you mean operating hours, every theater is different. But expect to work a few hours before and after opening and closing.

I applied for a job at AMC Theaters but have not heard back is there an email they have because I would love to work there?

How much do they pay u hourly n is it weekly or every 2 weeks?

As an investor in AMC Theatres, it troubles me that AMC wasn't able to retain someone like yourself. I'll try to reach out to corporate and see if any changes can be made, for future employees. @amctheatres Thank-you for sharing your story.

Update : So I reached out to CEO Adam Aron through his public email address, talking about your concerns, and asked him to watch your video, and see if there's anything they can do, to make AMC a better place, to retain employees like yourself. As an Investor I had a vested interest in reaching out to him, and as someone who wants to work for AMC as an experience in life, I also wanted things better, in case I decided to stay longer than just an experience. I did what I could, and will continue to advocate for stories such as yours. On a positive note, this was his reply : " Thank you for letting me know about this. " ~ Adam Aron
