Working for a world-class architect - what's it like at David Adjaye's office

In this video, I go through my experience working as an architectural designer at Adjaye Associates London office. Sir David Adjaye is an award winning architect, most famous for the African American Smithsonian museum in Washington DC. I go behind the scenes to talk about my time spent in the office - the good and the not so good.

    How can the "experience" of working be separate to the money you earn from it? Isn't it the reason you do it in the first place? I'm sorry, don't mean to be harsh but this whole situation with architects make me sick and I'm tired of people explaining how "ok" it is to work for free. This thing need to stop.

    It's similar in all fields really, when you start you don't make much and gaining experience is more important than amount being earned. It's a derivative of the apprenticeship system.

    You got a point. We’ve been conditioned to accept this status quo. It’s a real problem from a devalue of our time, all the way to a winning a project. It’s unbalanced and unsustainable... arch has a lot to reform.

    I think the big difference with the mining industry and others, is there is unionisation. The creative world for the most part is not. It is a real problem. Apprenticeships and internships are incredibly valuable, more important than a lot of the theoretical learning that happens. A lot of companies are not inclined to invest in the early part of peoples careers, which is short sighted. Unions have, along with others, have helped to redress that imbalance.

    definitely agree! with no unions and people so happy to give up their rights just to have a starchitect name on their cv, future of young architects does not look so bright!

    Hi...I enjoyed listening to your experience at David's office. I've done a few competition collaborations with him over the years, we won one in 2006, but it was never built. I've just made the jump to using Blender and I really like it. I wondered if you could help me - I'm trying to decide on free 2d cad software. Something that does what Autocad does for construction drawings. Is Freecad good for 2d architectural drafting?

  • @UHStudio

    @UHStudio

    Жыл бұрын

    Check out QCad. It's open source, but paid (cheap, about $30 or so) to provide development. It does have a learning curve, and it isn't as powerful as Autocad. Freecad can also be used, but again, it has quite a bit of a learning curve but can also be used for modelling work and for drafting work. Another more expensive solution is Rhino. It's a perpetual license that costs about 1000 $/€ and even though Rhino is more known for 3d, it's equally capable for drafting work and works in a very similar way to Autocad.

    @@UHStudio ah thank you. I did try Qcad very briefly and quite liked it. Think I'll give it another go. I've also only ever heard of Rhino being used for 3d, I didn't know you could also do 2d drafting. Do you know if Blender can be used for 2d drafting? I've just been using it for 3d and it does anything 3ds Max does. I now do all my rendering and VR in unreal 5.

    how about their design process?

  • @UHStudio

    @UHStudio

    3 жыл бұрын

    The design process is interestingly unique. As you would expect, every big idea comes from David. However, not all ideas are as practical as you would have in other firms. Many are reflections of what David may see as important or interesting. Then, as mentioned in the video, it is the team's job to make that idea into a working architecture project with all the necessary elements. For example, I worked on an auditorium, and there are certain types of auditorium footprints that provide the best seating experience for the most amount of people. However, in the case of the auditorium for Adjaye, I had to develop a script that could easily populate a new shape to test whether provides the necessary audience numbers.
