modern videogames are honestly a miracle. There is so much complexity in software products, and game engines alone are so complex, not to mention games being built on top of those engines. When you think about how many lines of code are necessary to make even something simple like an FPS player controller work, it's astounding.

Speaking of how game developers interact with the community. Do you remember when Patrick Soderlund said *_"Dont like it, dont buy it"_* when trying to market one of their up and coming BF games? Pepperidge farm remembers. Im not a game developer. Just your average game enjoyer. But I do like a developer that listens to the community and gives them what they want and not what the people wearing the suits in the boardroom think that we want. Saints row reboot.... Dev team butting heads with the community/fans of the franchise and that game flopped bad....

@@l.3626 When a developer is facing large amounts of backlash/concern over a title and that is their response. It doesn't exactly paint a picture of confidence. It comes off as defensive and angry. People who have played games like the battlefield franchise for years on end and enjoyed them, want more stuff they can enjoy, they want a good game, and they want the developer to succeed. So when you are those people and you air your concerns about the title and say hey this isn't really the direction we want to go or we have concerns, only for those comments to be completely dismissed out of hand isn't great. And yes you show the developer you dislike a product or their actions by not supporting them financially. But in an idea situation it never need come to that point. Certainly I wouldn't call it the gold standard or first action a developer should take.

Going into game development made me only see the issues in modern day game development to the point where I said fuck that shit and went into data center work instead. The only development studios that actually make interesting shit anymore is smaller developers because they actually care, unlike large companies and their devs.

When Larian announced that they would not do DLCs for BG3, I understood it when the reasoning they gave was "Their headspace was in a different place". You really have to be motivated and focused on a game to make it end up good. Uninterested developers/distracted team leads to a bad game.

Good video Devil. I've only done a bit of minor game dev in my free time (some Unity, currently learning Unreal) but I'm pretty familiar with general software development as I have a Computer Science degree and have worked as a .NET developer professionally for about 15 years, and yeah, software can get COMPLICATED. I can't even imagine how complex a big game is; even in a fairly small software system you can change one thing and it'll affect things you wouldn't expect. That can/should be limited by proper or more intelligent software architecting, but it's not simply something you can totally eliminate regardless of how you architect things, particularly as the system gets more complex.

Followed your channel for a really long time, as I'm into pretty much all the same games you cover. Can't tell you how awesome it is to hear this. It can be pretty tough to work on something for years of your life, sometimes crunching for 60-80 hours a week to get something out, only to have people with no experience just tear it apart. People think coming up with a game idea itself is easy, until the find out about the Artists bible and Game Design Documents that have to be compiled before you can even begin work. And the GDD includes the tiniest things like the Elevator Pitch (one liner to catch someone’s attention). It’s insane how much work just goes into the idea alone on paper.

I got the opportunity to take a couple of game development courses back in college and I absolutely love video games. However, because of those courses I have always had my mind blown and perspective blown wide open for what all goes in to making games. The complexities are endless but so are the possibilities. People who don’t have any experience with what goes on behind the scenes have no idea. That industry is also a meat grinder.

Game development isnt a chore is a massive undertaking of at least 10+ people to make something great. We get it. The problem isnt the fact that so much goes in its how it runs from what ive seen its a game like mercenaries from the playstation back in the day. It sounds Good,Trailer Looks good. But does it run well with the general populace? thats why we suggest things to enhance be it gameplay mechanics, types of game modes, will it have Workshop capability ?, how Graphic intense will it be ? cause not everyone is a content creator and can buy a new PC when they want. Or a new graphics card. From the Trailer its going to be graphic intense, so one might suggest that maybe lowering it a bit so everyone can play instead of the lucky few who can. I am happy that your seeing things from a new perspective as i have been watching youre vids since the Old Arma 2 days as well as all through your Great Moments on Arma 2 Dayz Mod which is probably my personal favorite Content youve done with Onnerby and friends i had a blast watching. i just want a NEW experience not something thats looks great has a lot of features but the design itself is based off another. OR does what a lot of games do lately and hold back all the content by adding DLCs after the games Launch that are supposedly new but where apart but where segmented off so that they can make more money off it. or adds in game cash shops be it for cosmetics or actual gear. its nothing new to me. types of games like this HAS the potential to be great. But will it fall into one of those catergories ? Be you DDG.

that's cool and all, but a lot of your views are automatically biased because they are paying you to be a "community manager". Of course you will be hyping up the company you work for, they make it big it benefits you as well. That's not to say its not true, just sadly nowadays words mean nothing to me (as should it with everyone else), actions do. To many bad developers with broken promises or poorly implemented features kind of made me adopt the "put your money where your mouth is" way of thinking. So far, Madfinger is doing an ok job. I mainly play pve and that last patch got me just extra FPS and i am looking forward the possible lz/extract camping fixes and calling in a chopper as I do want to try pvp. But honestly, that whole LZ thing should of been properly thought out before implementing it. Anyone with a sliver of common sense should of realized a game with pvp (where toxicity is the worst) camping would of happened. And a karma system should of been implemented WAAAAAAY before it was released to combat team killing for gear.
