Although both Steve and I (the talking heads in the video) are both physicists, there are thousands of people working at/for CERN who are not. There are engineers of various descriptions (mechanical, electrical, microelectronic, civil...), technicians at all levels, admin staff etc. So there are loads of different opportunities. What unites us all is that we are all working at the cutting-edge of science and technology in a really exciting multicultural environment. Come join the fun!

Physics is often perceived as "hard". But it depends on your perspective. I always found the quantitative subjects (maths, physics..) far easier to grasp than the qualitative ones where I had to write essays and hope that the examiner agreed (or at least appreciated) my perspective. The main thing is to enjoy what you are doing. If this is the case you will do well!

This is actually quiet fun to watch a video about CERN and especially a Q & A video right after my own visit to CERN. I came back form my field trip to CERN just a week ago and it was awesome! I pretty much knew all the things from the video, but it was fun to see places that you just witnessed with your own eyes. We didn't get to see the detectors though, 'cause the LCH was on during our three day visit but it was cool non the less!

For more information, you can look at Wikipedia articles of History of the Internet and History of the World Wide Web, and view the Sixty Symbols video "What is CERN?" from June 23, 2012 starting at 5 minutes into the video.

I think there are only a few and probably not many vacancies for MD's at CERN. I started as a freshman with the goal of going to the UM Medical School. Changed my mind. There are a very limited number of internships for high school students, although one can find information on CERN's HR pages (can't put URL's here). Ways to participate? Find a nearby University that participates in any of the experiments. Ask your physics teacher to set up a Masterclass with that institute's help. Come visit during vacation. Above all, study and get good grades!

This is a long lasting structure(given there’s upkeep as well), so maybe we will see CERN be used for other purposes in the future. Also, I wasn’t doubting that you knew discovery precedes application. No, what I was trying to get across that given the course of history you can trust that investigation IS worth it. Then there are more personal reasons for investing in science. CERN motivates me and no doubt others to work at our ‘craft’ because I am amazed at what people can accomplish.

I want this comment to just prove a point and hope Brady considers it, but I must admit that your reasoning is solid. I haven't considered that point and it's valid, but I think using such close ups sparingly would produce a better effect especially since Brady uses very tight shots too often. I expect most people who disagree with me to have some immature refute like claiming I don't know how to make quality videos or supporting the status quo for no reason. You have a great interpretation.

It must be so dreary to have no innate curiosity, and to see no value in the understanding of the world around us. I cannot imagine having such a lack of imagination--and am so grateful for the creative and highly intelligent people that allow us to know about the universe we live in. And not just because what they learn has practical application (we would not have any modern amenities without them)--but because they enlighten us and spur our curiosity. Well, most of ours, anyway.

Many people applied the same argument to the space program. What possible benefit can shooting men briefly into space then bringing them back 3 days later possibly be of any benefit? Well, technologies and industries that produce things like LED's, water purification, solar energy, food safety, the list goes on. We have progressed as a society because of the knowledge we have previously and continue to build upon.

In fact this tunneling microscope is so good that it can even resolve individual atoms! Now you may say what is the good of a microscope that good. Well it can be used to create ultra-miniaturized circuits, with wires having maybe just 10 atoms across! I have written a lot now and I really could give more unexpected applications of abstract discoveries, but hopefully you will be okay with having to trust that discovery does lead to applications even if you can’t see it at first.

Why large, complex structures to probe matter? Because E is inversely proportional to wavelength. The smaller the wavelength, the smaller we can probe. Also, the more massive particles that decayed during the big bang require more energy to produce (E=mc^2). To get high energy collisions, you need a large accelerator (think Indy drivers). The detectors must be large and precise to detect those particles, as they decay into high-momentum particles. Precision is essential.

In your place, i would look if there are any educational physics networks in your country. In germany, there is one called "Netzwerk Teilchenwelt". It ist a network in which some research institutes cooperate, for example CERN ande an few german ones, who provide workshops for young students. And if you visited some of them and are a active part of that network you have the chance to go to CERN for a workshop. Maybe there is a similar thing in the netherlands.
