WORKBENCH with DRAWERS - Lots of STORAGE, super STURDY (2/2)

I built a workbench with drawers (DIY) with a super sturdy frame, half-lap and draw-bore joinery and added 12 full-extension drawers to the mix. The result is a beautiful workbench with lots of storage. This is part 2 of 2.

I want to let you know that I cooperate with a couple of tool companies. Occasionally, they provide me with some of their tools for me to use in the shop.

Thanks Stuart - that’s very kind of you. And I feel you’re right. Building this workbench I felt different, more relaxed and more confident that I know that I’m doing. It’s nice to hear that it shows. I’d be interested, though: can you lay your finger on it and give me an example or two in which aspects you feel that it shows?

Hallo Andreas. Sehr reflektiert.

Another question :) How did you plan this all out? Was it rough drawings or via Sketchup? I'm now thinking of copying your design for my little workshop for when I have a few weeks holiday in August.

  • @holzhandwerk_ak

I made the first drawings and sketches over two years ago. But I found it difficult to get all the details of the joinery right. In the meantime I had started using Fusion360 for CAD and I modelled the workbench with it. That helped me tremendously getting everything right and also sped up the cutting process since you know all the measurements beforehand. I’ve just published my plans in the video description, here’s the link: holzhandwerk.andreas-kalt.de/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/workbench-with-drawers.pdf

Thanks. Do you find it too loud? I always reduce the volume with the idea that it’s enough to convey the shop atmosphere but not so loud as to be annoying. From 3:45 for a about a minute I forgot to reduce the sound, though - I only realised this after uploading.

Hallo Andreas, I'm a new subscriber and came across your site. For me as a native English speaker with little German knowledge (however, learning by doing) find this very useful as I am very new to woodworking, and although there are many other sites in English, when it comes to local knowledge tools, wood etc it is much better. The one question I have if I may... Where would you recommend I obtain wood for projects etc as I find places such as Toom etc very limited and expensive. Unlike the UK there are lumber yards or reclamation yards where you can get wood at better prices. Thank you in advance and keep up the good work...

Thanks for your feedback. Do I understand you correctly, that you’re in Germany now? You could look out for "Holzhandel", e.g. in the yellow pages (gelbeseiten.de) - not all of them sell to non-businesses and you might have to check some out before you find one that offers the stuff you’re looking for. I had to as well but now I’ve found one in reasonable driving distance where I get my sheet materials from. What I also do is check eBay Kleinanzeigen (ebay-kleinanzeigen.de) for "Blockware" - that’s solid wood cut to boards. You need a jointer/planer to work with that. There are many private people who offer such wood, e.g. from cutting up grandma’s plum or cherry tree etc.
