Hozier has a way of making his music feel like a deep sigh after a long, hard day. It's relieving, no matter how heartbreaking it is.

This song totally describes my relationship with my fiance. We were friends for four years, then when i was laying in an intensive care unit, after nearly dying in a car accident, angry that i had even survived, he told me his true feelings for me. He said that the thought of losing me scared him, and he never wanted to be without me. My anger at being alive instantly dissolved and I now look forward to our future together 😙

What is wrong by finding Hozier through "Take me to Church"? You have to find an artist one way or another. Whether its his most heard song or his least. Either way, if you like the artist, thats all that matters.

  • @Nanticoke

Thanks Michael for speaking my mind and am pretty sure of many others! I never heard of the artist til I heard the song through a movie trailer. I can't tell you how many times I have discovered some of the best music and artists from around the world through movies. That kind of comment is in my opinion is... ignorant.

I love the little detail that in the line when he says there’s nothing sweeter than his baby he says “I’d never want once from the cherry tree”. It reminds me of his other song “Cherry Wine” and draws a contrast between the toxic relationship in that song and the healthy relationship in this one.

Liz, I think you missed a few steps. Our God will forgive you if you're sorry because you trespassed against him and if you are trying to live exactly like him. Excuse me for believing that that is a bit of a vain God. On the other hand, sometimes being human is about learning to forgive people who never even asked for your forgiveness.

It is still the hardest thing I have ever been through. He recently reached one year of sobriety... he got help after I moved out. I know I made the right decision. The type of love described in this song is rare... but damn, it is amazing and life changing.

This song is the one that has the strongest hold on me. My ex used to whisper sing this song to me before I would nod off. More often than not I’d ask her to sing this specific song and skip all the others. Those moments was when I’d feel the most comfort and protected and loved above all, in my life. I could just sink away into nothingness listening to her whisper those sweet words to me. Now I can only manage to listen a few seconds in before Hozier actually starts singing. I didn’t know it was possible to feel this amount of despair and pain because of a song. I come back to this song every now and then with the hope that I might give me the overwhelming comfort it once did, but it’ll never be the same. It’s not her voice, it’s not calming. It’s hell. It will always be beyond me how someone who whispered “no grave can hold my body down, I crawl home to her...” in my ear, can one day decide to leave forever.

I interpret the line “nothing in her room but an empty crib” as he got the woman in question pregnant, or at least wants to have a family with her, and this was the catalyst for him turning his life around.

When I watched the original video the words were so perfect reminds me of a twin love, mirroring each other in the dance of life/love. There’s no one else in the room but them, even though the room is full. The words are unconditional and healing, they crawl back to each other…and yes I too would like to take a bath in Hoziers voice☺️

I can't even begin to replace one single word, nor note in this absolutely perfect arrangement of truth. I am speechless by how hauntingly the words send a message from a place in my heart that I hold only one soul.. I wish for every individual person who is gifted a life in this world to feel the way I do, and obviously these cats do, from time shared with the one that can bring you to the place where such overwhelming love is grown
