The thing about energy is true. Although not everything in your life will give you energy. Things will drain your energy, and that's okay, that's natural. And it's also okay if work drains your energy, as long as there is some energy left and you working enables you to do the things that you'd like to do + things that recharge your batteries. However, it could also be the other way around: Maybe work is giving you energy while home may drain energy because you have a 2 month old keeping you awake all night. Doesn't matter - as long as there as a balance between - yeah, balance, not harmony - of things that give you energy vs things that drain your energy, your able to move forward in life.

people who are criticizing him for being divorced are missing the point, sometimes marriages don't work what, so what? the point he is making is basically if you want to work in high tech or other competitive industries, you have to work hard, there is no other way around. If you want to be extremely successful thats the way to go, if on the other hand, you are ok with being modestly successful but happier and with more leisure, then you don't have work that hard, which is a more sane position, but they are mutually exclusive specially for people who are trying to create a business from scratch. One is not necessarily better than the other but the question here is, which is more important , the extra achievement praise and luxuries brought by outstanding success or the free time / leisure that you have thanks to not pursuing a path like Bezos' ? it's a very personal and contextual decision to be made, it's up to you

The money was good enough for me to quit and find something else, 51hrs of overtime does that. Don’t ever sacrifice your life for a corporation, if you have to work your ass off in order to catch up, do it, but then tone it down and enjoy. They people who need work life balance enforced on the companies culture don't have the freedom to take year sabattical on the spot. They would be homeless and starving within couple months. It is funnt he talks about the interns and the C level. The two places where the work life balance is least issue. C levels have enough money to just buy their way out of work life balance problems or just retire. Interns usually are young with no family and youth enthusiams. The bit he doesn't talk about: The vast majority of the staff, the plain old line workers. Doing the job, because the job needs to be done and you get paid doing it. The people most in need of company (or regulation in company being unwilling) making sure work life balance is maintained by not working them crazy hours. There is a reason 8 hour work day was a fought for thing to point of strikes and getting beaten by police. So yeah nice flip of him to go from work life balance to work life harmony. Your work energizes you. Packing Amazon shipping boxes for hours straight with no breaks is energizing and motivating? Really Jeff? you hear what you just said? Where is the answer? Just trying to convince people that working 10 hours and commuting two hours would leave you with any energy to workout enjoy time with your family, sleep will, educate yourself, relax, and eventually will leave you with enough money to pay for all that. FYI Sweden lowered the working hours to 6 hours daily

Guess what you boss does not give a fuck about your life, goals, desires, and you as a human being. Your boss only sees you as a number on the financial statements. You have to bow your head and obey your boss (master) no whatever what or guess what you will get fired and someone else will do your job. The system is beyond fucked up and repair. The only way to have work life balance is if you are your own boss or have a boss that gives you a lot of flexibility.
