Woody v. Bo: The Ten Year War
Two great colleges & two great football coaches. Woody Hayes & Bo Schembechler met on the field of battle from 1969 thru 1978. Bo & Woody discuss behind-the-scenes strategies of these games. These physical and psychological battles became "The Ten Year War." At stake: National Ranking, Big Ten Bragging Rights and the Ultimate Prize...a trip to the Rose Bowl!!! Relive these moments with Woody & Bo and view great highlights of each game.

It is December 2021 and college football is heading down a path where it is no different than the NFL. Big money is taking over the programs. Without any transfer restrictions the players are not effectively year to year free agents plus they will get endorsement money. It is funny that now the coaches are earning more money in college than the NFL coaches.

I had the privilege to see them coach when I was a student at Michigan. Great gentleman and coaches both!
"There's an old saying that I learned from the coach at Ohio State, and that was 'when people say a lot of nice things about you, look out.'" These words really ring true this year in Michigan. I liked being the underdog, and all that hype about blowing through TCU didn't sit right with me. Hype never wins games, heart does.
Long live Woody Hayes!

Whats really remarkable is that Bo and Woody were lifelong friends. Woody was so upset with Bo when he left and went to TTUN. It didn't end the friendship however the rivalry did get even more intense.
Love this video! Makes you realize why this rivalry is one if not the best in all of sports
I remember my uncle had this. That man absolutely HATED Michigan and was obsessed with OSU and Woody Hayes
Greatest opening I've ever seen
I was 10 years old in 1969 and that Michigan Ohio State game was the first college football I saw on television. 27:50: Incredible. 30-2-1 over 3 years and no bowl games. Loved the sit-down between the two coaches at the end.

Sadly. Woodys saying on winning too much applied in 2021
I remember my 1st Michigan Ohio state game. One of the band members was dressed as Woody and imitated him breaking up the side line markers which made the Michigan stadium go wild.
What a great ending...Bo and Woody sitting together talking like the friends that they were!
I’m not kidding when I say I watched this VHS from the age of 4 more than any movie until probably age 10. Always made me kinda like Woody even as a diehard Michigan fan.
_Get 'er done Maize & Blue!_ Looking for *THREE IN A ROW!*
My dad was at the 69 game, he said the whole student section was drunk on schnapps and high on 'grass', as they called it then.
Woody said the '69 team had no weakness...well clearly they did. Special teams!! They couldn't even convert on their first 2 PATs?? Lol
Great video. Brings back fond memories.
So wholesome
Love you Bo.
My first rivalry game was Ricky Leach's freshman year whe the Buckeyes scored two late tds to beat UM. Heartbreaking!!

The guys who played for him loved him.
First play of the game in '69 Kern runs for 25 yards, easily and without limping. Give it a rest, Woody; your guy wasn't hurt. ("He could hardly walk when he woke up Saturday morning.") You got rolled.
Two coachs with a great rivalry
Florida State would feel Bo’s pain in 2023. At least the ACC had FSU’s back.
The game had passed hayes up by 1970. He had more talent but was outcoached. I was glad to see him go.
Archie looks like the first modern running back
This is the only proper way to start the College football season. Go Blue!
While I still think it's the best rivalry in sports, I think the "respect" for the rivalry has, in my opinion, exited. While "hating" the rival used to be said a bit "tongue in cheek", it's now real. I'm a Buckeye who used to go to some games in Ann Arbor. I would never go anymore. The behaviors have become coarse, vulgar, and physically threatening. I'm sure some Wolverines feel the same about Columbus. I think the respect ended that night in 2006 when I saw most of Ohio Stadium in tears during the tribute to Bo, who died the day before.

Dang Coach Duffy is 3-5 against both of them during the war (1969-1972) Michigan: 1969 Ohio State: 1971 1972
@stevekov6740
6 ай бұрын
Yeah Duffy was on his way out then but he got in a couple of big upsets.
As good as these two teams were, neither one of them could have beaten the 1969 Texas team. The right school was the consensus #1.
Back then, Michigan and Ohio State would battle it out to see who would play in the Rose Bowl only to get stomped by USC.
"Officials that can make mistakes like that will NEVER WORK FOR ME AGAIN." Well doesn't that just say it all. Woody was too full of pride. He was a good coach in a talent rich state that would scare everybody...except Bo. Maybe a teaspoon of humility would've been a helpful remedy for the old coach but his pride kept him from seeing that losing his temper in public could cost him. Acting like tearing up the sideline markers was somehow justified is beyond comprehension. Eventually this all led up to his ultimate demise culminated by the punching of the Clemson player. Too bad he was a condescending, prideful figure whose memory will always be tainted because of it. He had great teams but his disrespect and disdain for Michigan will always be the calling card for which he is remembered along with that long shadow of entitlement which resides deeply within the psyche of all buckeye fans to this day. Other than that, I loved growing up in that era and learning to live and die during The Game.
@BeatlesLennonjdi

He seemed more respectful in his reflections of the game. The man had his heart and soul between the sidelines and he couldn’t hold his composure. Every man has his regrets and mistakes. As a Michigan fan, I have tremendous amount of respect and admiration for what he was able to achieve throughout his career, setting a standard in which drove not only Michigan but the entire conference to strive for. Whether you agree or not, my opinion on the matter is: there would be no Bo, without Woody. For that alone, I am thankful.
Man, I'm a buckeye fan,but in 1974 lantry made that last field goal. This film clearly showed the ball go through the goal posts and then drifted left.

Nope, 5-4-1 was the final count in favor of Bo & the Wolverines. They ruined osu's national championship hopes twice (1969 & 1973). Go figure that 73 Buckeyes team that won the Rose Bowl was the only time that the Big Ten won a Rose Bowl over that span. So the winner of the 10 year War was 0-9 in the Rose Bowl.
If Woody Hayes hadn't been cheating, he would not have won a single game against Bo.
