When we were kids we acquired these Japanese wood puzzles which were a marvel. Your lid mechanism triggered a memory of those puzzles. Arigato gozaimashita!

I came across this channel yesterday. Absolute magic. I am transfixed by each and every video. Thank you so much.
I've just finished my own toolbox. And yours is indeed awesome. Great job!

man, this is a gorgeous Japanese style Chest, I enjoyed so much this video!
Man! Kinda wish my hubby was "in" to woodworking now! He loves Zatoichi movies & this would be a super-cool gift!
This is fantastic! I'm just getting into woodworking, and I also own the Zatoichi box set.
I ´ma just in the project of making a traveler tool box. I was looking the internet for a good idea. Your build is amazing the best I have seen. Not going to make the same but sure it will bring me some inspiration. Thanks have a good day.
Beatifull design man...i love it !

Me too! hopefully I'll be able to make some of those awesome little puzzle boxes
This is fantastic.
Great box, great details! Shaping the drawer locker to a sword would be a great deal regarding the swordsman inspiration :) It almost look like one already (okay, more a western one than a katana)
I really like your locking mechanisms.
Pretty cool. Thanks for sharing that.
Great design elements! Funny thing is, I kept thinking how I really like the leather strap for a handle.

AdventuresInDIY Thanks! I'm glad you like it. The leather does make a big difference when it's loaded down with tools. Much easier on the hands! lol
The locking method of the top is really cool!
I like the looks of it. About your keyed lid lock, you could use the bar to lock both end gates if you make the bar pivot on a pin in the center of its length.

Thanks for the comment and for watching! That's a really good idea actually
It's a little late now, but making a rebate on the underside of the horizontal beam of the lid would give you a place to store your drawer key that is out of the way (no losing / dropping /stepping on the key) and the rebate would not be visible when the lid is closed, since the two uprights on both ends would hide the rebate. I really like your ideas, great work!

Jason Wood that's an excellent idea. Maybe even add a magnet to the key and have one on the rebate?
Unique, interesting and elegant.

The drawer lock is very similar to the lock used on the front panel of the Dutch style tool chest !! I built one and it works great. Nice design by the way 👍👍

Actually a long history of the Dutch in Japan; it would have been funny to call it a "Kōmō toolbox" ;)
Excellent.... Thank you ...
Excellent design, sir!

Thanks for watching! glad you like the design.
Lemongrasspicker, whether it is "totally impractical" or not is irrelevant. All that's important is whether YOU like it. I think it is lovely, especially with its secret locks. Take a bow, Sir. Well done☺
Firstly love the box, the contrast of woods, the locks and just the size are all beautiful! I hope you don't mind me saying but the lid lock could simplified. The pull out bit with the two pins could do the same job as the slide across part in stopping the lid coming off, so no need for the part that slides across. Handle with two pins through two holes would stop the lid going left but allow back to front movement, take handle/lock with two pins out and then the lid would be free to move left and therefore be removed. Please don't take offence at my observation as I love the box!

I appreciate that. I probably won't do another since this one took forever. I'm kind of favoring a simpler toolbox over anything more complicated. Thanks for the compliment!
Neat ideas, I like it.

Very cool man.
Good design 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
For the lock to move more freely, I think wax would do wonders. The same with the other sliding pieces

And it would be cool if the drawer lock had a sword shape, something like a katana ;)

Sehr schön! Ich habe das Video sicher schon 10 mal gesehen. 😀👍
Interested in seeing the inside. How did you organize it. Without organization its just another wooden box. Love the lid.

It was so long ago I dont remember really. I think I did one drawer for chisels and the other for measuring tools
I’ve come back to this video several times over the last year and have to ask: Would you be able to provide some measurements and a few shots of the interior? I know most of the construction can be gleaned from watching this video, but I’d really appreciate the extra help on recreating this beautiful toolbox.

Honestly it's been so many years since I made it, and it got crushed in the move to our house so I don't really have any solid reference for it. From what I recall the top section was maybe 7" deep and 12-14" wide. The drawers were the same width but maybe 2" deep.
Good job very clever .Use some wax to make everything move smoother it helps

Does it massage you too?
Subscribed! You are clever!
I want to make one now!!!I have a suggestion - make your key a little longer so it goes through bottom drawer and sets into slot in bottom of toolbox. That being said, I think it is a great design!
@Lemongrasspicker

That's an excellent suggestion Chuck
I like your ‘secret’ ideas. How about the drawer locking key goes all the way through to a ‘keyhole’ recess in the base ? Any reason why the left side runner is not L shaped ?

Sadly this toolbox got smashed in moving so I no longer have it. It did serve me very well for over 3 years though.
Zaitochi!! :))
Too clever
How did you connect the dark wooden piece to the sides of the box? What kind of blind joinery?

Just glue actually
A minor FYI: as to the name, it is pronounced 'Za-toh-i-chi', not 'Za-toy-chi'.

Additional even more minor note, technically the name is just Ichi. Zatou is a designation for a blind person, although Zatoichi makes it his own. Nice box though, your vid is motivating me to make my own custom box!
