Woodworking: Building a Simple Coffee Table

Sister-in-law Tinkerer wanted to build a simple coffee table from 2x4s, so she came over to my shop for assistance. This is a simple design that only takes (5) 2x4x8' boards, glue, and screws. Filmed with the iPhone 7 on the iPhone camera stand. Logo design by Brandon Kettle. Logo music is "Sour Tennessee Red" by John Deley. Video music is"Take it Back", "March On", and "Search and Rescue" all by Dan Lebowitz.

Nice one, good job. Two things I would correct here though: If you already use pocket holes, you probably should attach the top with them too, from the bottom side. Also the long piece down there could be also done with pocket holes, it would be stronger connection. Other than that, nice and easy!

Kevin, first of all, thanks so much for the view and the comment. I have pasted a reply I did on another comment a while back that was asking the same thing. Hope this helps. I didn't write down any dimensions when I built this because I typically make it up as I go. I can guess that the cross pieces would have been about 10.5" long (based on overall width of 17.5" minus two 3.5" legs). The legs would have been about 16.5" tall (based on overall height of 18" minus the 1.5" thickness of the top). As far as the stretcher bar that runs along the bottom of the table and connects the two leg assemblies together, its length would depend on how far from the end you inset each leg assembly. It looks like my stretcher is approximately 37" long.

Should have joint turnover boards and planed then next then glue them together! Then sand from 80 grit all the way up 240 or 300 grit super smooth the add a nice wood finish to bring out the grain!

Burton, I am sure that would look nice, but the point of this build was to make a simple coffee table that anyone could do without special equipment. Also, all that work would have been a waste because my sister-in-law painted the table, and it would have been covered up. Thanks for the view and the comment!

Mike, thanks for the view and comment. Sorry it took so long to respond. I make most of the projects up as I go so I usually don't have dimensions to give, but I looked back at a previous response in the comments and found some basics. Really though, this table can be made whatever dimensions you want. That is the beauty of the simple design. Hope this helps. - I can guess that the cross pieces would have been about 10.5" long (based on overall width of 17.5" minus two 3.5" legs).
