Nice vase, PF. It is good to see that you have some sponsors to your channel. Your hard work is beginning to pay off. Also, the ad ponsorships go to show that you have gained trust with advertisers. That means you are doing a good job. But, I wish Carter & Son tools would offer a sponsorship since you have gone out of your way of promoting their tools for quite some time FREE of charge and out of the goodness of your heart because you believe in their products. At the least, they could say THANK YOU.

@PFWoodturning That was nice. Last time I heard from you about sponsoring or getting stuff from Carter & Sons was a couple of years ago when you first mentioned desiring them to be a sponsor. Glad you got something! The tools were a very nice gesture.

I struggle with the EWT hollowing tools sometimes. I have a set of John Jordans if you can still get them (I think his wife still sells them) They are HSS tips and can do a great job with aggressive hollowing without the chatter you may get with EWT on harder woods. That said, I think the EWT #1 is the best hollowing tool they make.

Yes, I do like it! The blue resin goes well with the wood. It looks like a rather large acorn! I'm particikarly glad you showed the use of resin on discrete cracks. These occur in a number of my works in progress. So, it's good to see how it's done. Thank you!

A technique that I routinely use for epoxy resin filling that helps minimize the voids (without using a pressure or vacuum pot) is to heat the wood around and in the cracks with a heat gun (not to extreme, but you want the cracks warm), apply the sealing tape, then heat the epoxy resin with the gun as you slowly pour it in. This significantly refuces the viscosity of the resin (making it act more like water) and the capillary action of the small cracks will draw the watery epoxy in, rather than resisting being filled. You do not want to use fast cure hardener and never heat the epoxy to a temperature where it starts to smoke. It works well for me to use a heat gun aimed ar the stream of epoxy as it is leaving my mixing container. Warming the wood first ensures that the epoxy doesn't cool too fast as it makes it's way into the cracks.

I do similar work filling long cracks with resin, and find filling from the end grain traps a lot of air causing voids. My method now is to rough turn to a parallel cylinder, ie no curves. Lay the log flat and fill each crack one at a time. When pouring I agitate the resin in the crack with a long stiff wire. Still get those annoying 'pin' holes but nowhere near as bad as those you demonstrate here. Coincidentally, much of my current output is cherry, being as I have so much of it at the moment. A fellow turner informed me that cherry is prone to develop fine line cracks during sanding, which I have experienced more than once. Like most woods heat can cause this but this guy is of the opinion that cherry is worse than most. I'm inclined to agree! Anyway, I love your end result, cherry is so well figured and the pieces I have at home mellow with age and the grain becomes more defined. Gotta love a bit of cherry!!

Great job, Peggy. Te vase looks beautiful. Have you ever considered making a hot glue "dam" around the cracks instead of using the tape? Would probably allow you to fill the cracks in a single pour with less mess. I've done it a number of times with good success. Just a thought.

Would a large, thick. rounded bowl scraper be useful for the final steps of hollowing a vessel like this? For example, the Hurricane Turning Tools, HTT-256W, M2 HSS, 1 1/2" (x 3/8") Heavy Duty Half Round Scraper, or something similar. Thanks for the video. Love the project. 👍👍

Would you consider going over your experience with your lathe? Good things? Bad things? I'm still troubleshooting, but I think my lathe might have died this morning. I've been looking at Laguna REVOs for several months - just haven't quite worked up the nerve to pull the trigger. Thanks!
