Woodturning - Tobacco Pipe (How to make a Tobacco Pipe - Detailed Explanation)
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Making my own Tobacco Pipes is what first really started me down the path of woodturning. I wanted a way to achieve the precise drilling required to create a perfect "draw". And so I bought my first lathe! Well actually my Dad bought me the lathe for my Christmas and Birthday.....Thanks Dad! Since the Briar wood was so expensive, I decided to try some local hardwoods; but the wood just kept cracking on me! So I began to search youtube for ways to dry wood without cracking. This led me to Sam Angelo' channel ( / @wyomingwoodturner ) where I found videos on drying wood. But he also had all these warped wooden bowls he showed he was drying. What the heck is this guy doing with these bowls? What's this all about? So I watched how he turned solid pieces of wet wood into bowls and other forms and I decided to give it a try. This was just over 4 years ago. And so here we are!

A lovely pipe. I don't actually smoke but I'm English so a pipe is necessary for communication. As all Englishmen know, the only acceptable method of greeting an acquaintance in a public space is to hold one's pipe aloft and call out "Aaraah Yaheaargh!" or some other incoherent noise that sounds like a cross between gargling and groaning. It is also a vital implement for giving directions within one's locality. To point with anything other than a pipe is socially unforgivable and likely to bring shame upon one's family. After such a faux pas, there is nothing left but to do the honourable thing and spend an entire year being seen outside without a hat.

You good sir, are a trip....lol
I make and sell pipes as a hobby, and the demand is really picking up. I was drawn to your video, as there is always something to be learned, and your video didn't disappoint. The pipe is really nice, but the stem is where I really paid attention. Acrylic stems are a tricky thing, and you did a beautiful job and I learned quite a bit. Appreciate your experience and skill, and your willingness to share with others. You make a beautiful product. Be well. Jim
I never considered a pipe could be art (as I don't smoke I really don't consider pipes at all) but brother, this is absolutely a work of art. I like the stem the way it is - very unique. This was just great to watch and I am looking forward to seeing you other videos.
Beautiful pipe! Thank you for the detailed play by play on the making of the stem. Not a lot of pipe tutorials show so much of that part.
I’ve always wanted to make a pipe and wondered if I could use my lathe to make one. I’ll admit that I’m a bit nervous but I can say in all honestly, I’ve learned more from my mistakes than my successes. Wish me luck. Excellent content here on your channel.
Probably *the* best video I've watched on youtube for someone getting into pipe making like myself, who is going to make the leap from pre-drilled blocks to getting a lathe setup.
I love everything about it. It's a great shape on both the bowl and the stem. The briar grain and acrylic pattern are fabulous. Truly beautiful work!
wow! magnificent. I've been smoking pipe for 60 plus years. This is pure poetry. you are a masterful artist and I so appreciate your presentation.
Beautiful pipe and stem. Excellent commentary during the whole process. Thank you for a great video!
I’ve only had one failed attempt at making a pipe before I got a lathe but now I’m excited to try again. I really enjoyed your video it was very informative and the finished product is stunning.
Recently got into pipe smoking after enjoying cigars for a while and this made me appreciate my briar pipe 100x more. Beautiful craftsmanship and a great tool that looks great too. Cheers
The pipe is amazing, extremely successful and super beautiful! On the other hand, I was able to learn a lot from your video. Thank you very much for that! Now I will definitely make progress with my pipe construction.
as an old pipe maker myself i really have to commend you,it is perfectly balanced in the exact stem to briar equations.really a picture perfect pipe.
Excellent. I still have some valuable pipes from my Grandfather, over a hundred years old by now, and a few expensive ones I had when I smoked a pipe decades ago. Always wanted to know how they were made. Thanks you. Great craftsmanship.
That was really interesting. I rarely smoke anymore, but I have a small collection of tobacco pipes that I keep just because I love the way they look. I've never seen the process of making a wood pipe before though, thanks for sharing.
Sterling! Excellent tutorial . . . and a beautiful pipe, perfect proportions.
while I don't suggest smoking...I do keep a small jar of pipe tobacco in my office. I love the smell of a good a pipe. Haven't lit up in years...decades, even. nice presentation! beautiful burl.
It seems the older I get the more prominent my Canadian accent becomes. At 25-35 I would have told you that I don’t have an accent. At >60 I haven’t begun saying ‘eh?’ ... but I do hear the odd ‘aboot’ come out of my yap. Your accent sounded so prominent to me that I had to find your main page/bio just to confirm my suspicions. You sir, are a bona fide Canuck. I’m thinkin’ we all have it and that there must be some validity to the stereotype, eh?
As a pipe smoker myself your creation put a smile on my face. I want it in my collection of 23 pipes of the finest British, Irish with silver sterling collar, Italian with 18-carat punto Oro, Danish Dutch, and one from the States with a tortoiseshell mouthpiece. Very particular about my tobacco blend. Smoking a pipe is very satisfying. Thanks for sharing your passion with us and best wishes from the UK
The best detailed pipe making video on youtube, really enjoyed it. Great upload.
Wow, awesome video. I have been an occasional pipe smoker for about 44 years. I have always greatly appreciated the workmanship of a good pipe and the one in this video is Gorgeous. I have one pipe that is very similar that I have had for about 42 years. I am an old carpenter and cabinet maker and was always curious about how a pipe was made. A Lathe is one of the few tools I have never touched, but thats gonna change. I'm retired from the fire service so smoke is in my blood. Great, great video.
I have been interested in doing this. After going over some of my subscribed channel I found this. It is perfect. Thank you for making this video
I was absolutely amazed by this video, thank you so much for posting. Now I have one more project to add to my list of things to accomplish before I die. I'm now a new subscriber.
Beautiful video by a beautiful man. God bless you my friend. You're on the road to mastery, a path destined only for the Chosen.
I think of all the pipes you show in this video I like the pipe you just made the best. It looks very balanced. The stem ornament plays very well with the shank shape. It's a very beautiful pipe overall.
That was a very cool video! That pipe is gorgeous! Definitely gives me a new appreciation for the craftsmanship of pipes that I did not have prior to this video.
Totally awesome! What a treasure. Excellent instruction. You are such a craftsman.
The last few weeks I'm looking to video's of making pipes. I happens to be a pipe-smoker, so that the reason of my interests. You are the first who don't color the pipe, and I like that, I do like that a lot! Besides that, the models you show on your side are very beautiful. This video is very useful, you explain a lot and that way some thing became clear to me, thank you for that.
Perfect pipe! Nice balance and nice color! You don’t give yourself enough credit! Fine job!!
Kyler, you have really shown your talent on this turn. It is AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL! SAFE TURNING, John

Wow, I learned a lot from this. So much you can do with a wood lathe alone. Didn't know you could make stems that way. Thanks!!
Ho sempre molto da imparare guardando attentamente i tuoi video, e resto sempre piacevolmente colpito dal perfezionismo tipico dei popoli anglosassoni.
Thank you for sharing so much of the proccess! Beautiful work!
AMAZING. I do not have the patience for anything like this. Great work.
I never would have thought you could turn a pipe, great job I enjoyed watching!

Never seen a pipe made before, what a little beauty.
This is excellent work. It has the added bonus of sounding like Letterkenny for pipe making.
Kyler looks like we have much in common brother. I made and sold pipes for several years. Excellent video!

What a fantastic piece of work. Thank you for sharing it.
Excellent looking pipe!!!! Congratulations on the hard work and thanks for sharing.
Gorgeous pipe and fantastic instruction thank you!
Beautiful grain on that briar and an amazing looking pipe.
Well there you go. You might have spent a lifetime not knowing but now you do. Lovely piece of burr to start with and the finish at the end made all the work worth while. Well done. Regards
This is something to be proud of. Very well done!
I loved your video! I'm a woodworker from Calgary! I heard your 'eh' at the end of the video and smiled, knowing you were from Canada
Gorgeous. Reminds me of my grandfather
what a great pipe, I like the originality in it.
Great video! Beautiful pipe, too! Simple but stylish. Reminds me of some 60s Stanwells. Beautiful work!
Gorgeous pipe, you're skilled. Nice to see that you're so keen to get the drilling right, a foundation for a good smoker.
This is absolutely beautiful work!
Thank you for your insights and handiwork. Nicely done.
Absolutely first-class work, and lovely style. The video was nice too.
Love the grains that came out. As a metal tradesman this shows many aspects of machine work and the care taken to not jag an edge which would result in some nasty smash bash crash of tools and wood.
This guy is very cool. I felt well treated by him while I was watching!
Your pipes stand with anybody's, young man. Excellent build. Ole'Pops would be proud to chooch one of those.
Thanks for educating me, great piece of work
Smoked a pipe years ago. Absolute work of art that.

Amazing job, Kyler. I'm not a smoker but I can still admire your skills.

That is a stunning pipe. I'd happily buy it!
Love the videos! I have some pieces of briar just for this.... can't wait to try it out!
Amazing pipe. I would buy that! You have skills my friend.
A good video of this process, well explained and with very good detail! Good stuff!
I always wondered how the bowl and stem are made while pointing in different directions! Now I know! :)
You are a very good woodturner and skilled craftsman if you don’t mind me saying.
Beautifully done!
That is incredible! A new turning goal for me. Actually I'm seeing a local turner on Saturday - I'll set him a challenge!
I had to fill a bowl and sup away whilst watching 😊 and you also reminded me I must order some more fine tobacco!
Beautiful work, great explanations.
Very cool video i’m a retired Woodworker and a pipe smoker i’ve never attempted making my own pipe but it looks like it would be fun to do i have however inherited many of my Grandfathers pipes he collected over the years and a couple of those were Christmas presents of ones i picked out for him as a child i appreciate the little drawing you made on how a good pipe is designed i honestly never knew that

Yes, excellent video. We learn every day, don't we? Regards. I'm a semi-retired cabinet maker myself. NEVER dared to make a pipe myself.
amazing work, ky. thats such a beautiful pipe.
would love more pipe making video's please....that was great.....and it looked a great balance so don't change it
Great video!! That pipe looks wonderful.
Really enjoyed your video. I made pipes 40 years ago without a lathes. I used a fosterer bit to drill the tobacco whole. I must disagree with you about the dangers. I smoked everything and inhaled them all. Bladder cancer is one of the dangers of pipe smoking. I still have my collection of great pipes. A number have crusty outside which makes another great looking finish. Best to you for the future.
I think that is a really nice pipe. Fun to watch!
Gr8t video i really like this style of pipe and i think the stem looks as it should thanks for your time. Takecare
Your technique is amazing
Love it reminds me of my dad, brought back so many fond memories
