Woodturning - The Crack of Gold

In this video I take a piece of spalted Ash and turn a natural edge bowl and add some gold flake to a crack running the length of the piece .. I finished it with Danish oil ..

    This reminds me of Japanese kintsugi where goals is used to repair broken pottery. The gold repair shows and creates a new work of beauty.

    It's part of a concept called wabi-sabi (侘寂). It's about accepting the transient nature of the world and finding the beauty in its imperfections. This channel often embraces wabi-sabi. I think that's why I find it so soothing.

    Repairing the cracks with color is called Kintsugi, in the Japanese tradition. It’s absolutely stunning!

    I fell in love with wood turning this past summer by watching wood turners on KZread. It's so relaxing to me. And I am sure pretty rewarding. I hope one day I can take a wood turning class!     I had never seen spalted ash before , turned just before decay , understood "crack of gold" only in the end , well , it was really worth turning , learned by the way that danish oil is worth using , thanks from a french woodturner !

    There is an interesting art of broken pottery that uses gold metal to fill the cracks...from Japan. Very nice piece...I like the patterns in the wood and the way you cleaned out and filled the crack!

    the fact you went through with this despite the huge knobs makes me realize you do not fear death. beautiful work! makes me think of the Japanese art of filling cracks in pottery with gold. also, butt joke.

    >be me months ago >quarantine has been akin to house arrest bc cases in california are high >stuck at home with college work and no job >no motivation to move from my room, depression resurfaces >find this channel somehow from a video about frogs >no experience in woodworking, am studying for a BA and music major >watch the entire channel in the next couple of days, actually doing house tasks and hobbies again while watching Thank you for unironically getting me out of a depression phase.     Spalting is any form of wood coloration caused by fungi. It definitely created a beautiful pattern in the Ash wood. The gold epoxy added just the right accenting to the natural wood color. Great Job, as is your stand of excellence, Andy!!

    when I see wood that has patterning from an infection, something in me cringes a bit. It’s a lovely work of art for sure, but I just imagine some alien digging up a human skeleton one day that had, say, osteoporosis, and going, “ooo! what a nice aesthetic this bone pattern has”. Never thought I’d empathize with a dead tree so viscerally, but there you go

    The wood grain in that piece was quite spectacular, and filling in the crack with the gold flake added just the right accent to the piece. You never cease to amaze me. I admittedly thought that raw piece, when you began, looked a bit dangerous, but you obviously "tamed" it and turned it into yet another collector's item.

    I love spalted pieces. I especially like your treatment of the crack. fits well with the spalting. i like the spalt that looks like Africa on the side of the bowl.

    This is so unique and stunning. Where the crack is, it looks like the bottom of a turtle shell. I really love this piece a lot. Wish I could afford it as I am quite sure it is too expensive for my fixed income. It is most fabulous. Wonderful job. 😊♥

    So here's me look at the piece thinking "oh that would be with actual gold flakes in the resin." And next thing you know there's gold flakes in the resin. So yay! I'm actually getting the design thing going. Just need to get back on the lathe (no heating in the shed). Grain pattern was glorious and a well turned live edge piece. Nice one Andy.
