In this video I take a piece of spalted Ash and turn a natural edge bowl and add some gold flake to a crack running the length of the piece .. I finished it with Danish oil ..

This reminds me of Japanese kintsugi where goals is used to repair broken pottery. The gold repair shows and creates a new work of beauty.

It's part of a concept called wabi-sabi (侘寂). It's about accepting the transient nature of the world and finding the beauty in its imperfections. This channel often embraces wabi-sabi. I think that's why I find it so soothing.

@@LuinTathren I agree! It's the 'imperfections' in the timber that make it so lovely with the resin.

I saw that in a video game (Warframe, specifically) that had pots with golden cracks. I had thought such a thing was fiction until now.

I fell in love with wood turning this past summer by watching wood turners on KZread. It's so relaxing to me. And I am sure pretty rewarding. I hope one day I can take a wood turning class! Watching you do the inside of that bowl was MESMERIZING!! You do such amazing work. Thanks for posting all your creations!!

I love that you always include the original peice of wood, that way we can see just how far it's come.
So satisfying, and a beautiful use of the natural fissure in the ash. Much more interesting than if the crack had not existed. Thank you for allowing us to watch you at work.
Life goal…. To own one of these gorgeous works of art. Beautiful work, Andy 🤩
The patterns in the wood are truly wondrous. The gold isn't as flashy as I thought it would be. I really like it.

I absolutely love the colors of this spalted ash. The gold epoxy and gold flake is a very nice touch.
Once again, spectacular. You are a master to bring to life the beauty of the wood grain and patterns. The filled crack adds that extra zip that you are so great with. Thank you for sharing your beautiful pieces and your talent with us.

No BS, I was seriously afraid for your knuckles while you were sanding by hand inside with it turning on the lathe. It turned out stunning!
I had never seen spalted ash before , turned just before decay , understood "crack of gold" only in the end , well , it was really worth turning , learned by the way that danish oil is worth using , thanks from a french woodturner !
The grain is amazing, and I especially appreciate the great photography of this beautiful piece

Beautiful, Andy, just beautiful!! Enjoying your videos very much! Wishing I had more time to turn than just the occasional pen blank!
There is an interesting art of broken pottery that uses gold metal to fill the cracks...from Japan. Very nice piece...I like the patterns in the wood and the way you cleaned out and filled the crack!
Thanks Andy for sharing this with us. The patterns of this bowl are incredible & beautiful. The final product is simply gorgeous. Thanks again, fred.
This really turned out beautifully. Wonderful work!

Spalting is any form of wood coloration caused by fungi. It definitely created a beautiful pattern in the Ash wood. The gold epoxy added just the right accenting to the natural wood color. Great Job, as is your stand of excellence, Andy!!

when I see wood that has patterning from an infection, something in me cringes a bit. It’s a lovely work of art for sure, but I just imagine some alien digging up a human skeleton one day that had, say, osteoporosis, and going, “ooo! what a nice aesthetic this bone pattern has”. Never thought I’d empathize with a dead tree so viscerally, but there you go
Absolutely beautiful! Well done 👍
So beautiful - the patterns and the shades of white in the wood - ❤️❤️

The wood grain in that piece was quite spectacular, and filling in the crack with the gold flake added just the right accent to the piece. You never cease to amaze me. I admittedly thought that raw piece, when you began, looked a bit dangerous, but you obviously "tamed" it and turned it into yet another collector's item.

Turned out beautiful
So here's me look at the piece thinking "oh that would be with actual gold flakes in the resin." And next thing you know there's gold flakes in the resin. So yay! I'm actually getting the design thing going. Just need to get back on the lathe (no heating in the shed). Grain pattern was glorious and a well turned live edge piece. Nice one Andy.
