I think this is what I'd call a pretty failure... :)
If you've been a longtime viewer, you'll notice that this project was started quite some time ago in my former house. I was hesitant on whether or not I wanted to upload this as it didn't quite come out the way I was expecting it to (so I sat on this video for about 8 months), but with how well the finishing system has been working on my more recent projects, I decided to refinish this piece and share it with you all. My original idea for this came from seeing actual cherry blossom trees at a nearby university campus that were in full bloom. I thought that, by mixing pink and white mica pigments, I could maybe create a similar look. I also thought that by adding in some broken pieces of wood, it might even lend a "tree" like appearance as well. In the end, though, the wood pieces really don't look like branches at all (in my opinion), and just look more like randomly placed pieces of wood. I think if I really wanted a "branch" look, I maybe should have used real twigs, and a lot of them, too. Oh well; you live and you learn! With all that said, I do really like how the pink and white blended together; it was the exact look I was going for, so that's great knowledge for future projects.
Let me know down in the comments below what you think of this piece!

    I feel that this piece is inspiring, you as an artist aren’t perfect and it’s good to be vulnerable it’s scary, yes but good! Thank you for showing us that even if our vision doesn’t come together the way we pictured it’s okay to push on and embrace. Really enjoying your channel, keep it up. ❤

    the pearl effect you got is really top notch and screams cherry blossom. definitely a win even if the project didn’t work out how you envisioned. love the idea though. also appreciate stopping the lathe at different points throughout, i like seeing how projects look at different points along the way.

    It's kind of amazing how much a hot glue seal can hold on the lathe. I'm expecting the work piece to come scooting off of that thing any second, but it just doesn't seem to want to.

    Indeed. I've been warned not to do that a few times by a number of people, but in my experience, the bond is incredibly strong. Even when I go to turn the glue off, I have to remove nearly all of it before I can even budge the thing. I'm not sure if you're familiar with Carl Jacobson or not (woodturner here on KZread), but he swears by this method and he hasn't had any issues. According to him, the keys is using a very hot glue gun. If the glue doesn't get hot enough, it won't bind securely enough to your piece and you might have an unstable bond.

    Even though it’s not the outcome you wanted, it’s still very beautiful! That pearlescent coloring is so rich, it almost looks like it’s made of satin!! If you ever decide to try it again, I think making the colors far more translucent would lend heavily to the “tree” look you were hoping for. So you could see the wood “branches” all the way through, instead of just the parts of wood that are on the surface?🤔 Ohhh maybe even make it transparent light blue, with the wood “branches”…then make a bunch of pink/white inserts (but super opaque, identical to this project) and toss them in to the blue translucent mix-to act as the cherry blossoms?? Oh oh ohhhh with the inserts, maybe you could just roll out a sheet of baking/parchment paper and spoon out a bunch of pink & white resin blobs (all different sizes and shapes) so they look like cherry blossom petals!!😱 I have zero wood working experience/knowledge, so I have no clue if this would even actually work…but at least it looks cool in my head. 🤷‍♀️🤣

    I would call this an experiment that didn't turn out. I love your other work with the floating wood. Maybe you need to add more wood to the mix. I also think the transparent version is more eye catching. When the epoxy is opaque, you really don't get to see the wood. Still very relaxing to watch the process.

    You Tube recommendations got me to the Jade brick bowl which was excellent. I've then checked out a few more of your videos but to me they are all spoilt by the terrible background music. The natural working sounds (as on the Jade video) are a much more pleasurable experience. Just a personal opinion but check out your peers on here - all the good ones are free from distracting background music.........and yes, I've tried with the sound off but silence doesn't work for me. Good luck - your obvious skills deserve it!

    Do these resin projects yellow or crack over time?

  • @formanwoodworking

    @formanwoodworking

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Para. They shouldn't crack (at least, I haven't ever heard of this being a problem before), but all resins, even the best, will gradually yellow with age and UV exposure. Usually, that's not a problem if you utilize a good amount of dye (which I've used in just about all of my projects). For instance, in this case, the pink is so potent that any mild yellowing will be too weak to see or affect the plate's appearance. Yellowing is mostly a problem if you do clear pours.
