Woodturning - Port Orford Cedar
First time for me turning Port Orford Cedar, I have recently taken down one of these trees as it was growing too close to a house, so I have a pile of this at the moment.
Finished in Danish oil, the speaker has a 2 x 50W amplifier with Bluetooth connection.

Hello Matt you always amaze me with your craftmanship and talent and your great imagination. The wood has amazing grain and it looks awesome. The speaker is magnificent and unique, I like the bit of resin you but around the edge and middle it looks really nice. Matt you are very talented putting this speaker together with all the fiddly little elements you needed, it's got a great sound. Thank you for a great video. Amanda xx

I can almost smell the lemony scent through my smartphone of that freshly harvested wood
I literally had no idea what he was making until I saw and heard the finished product. Amazing. I've never seen cedar without a dark stain on it. (as in cedar chests) This is beautiful.

I’m working with some Port Orford cedar right now and it’s so silky smooth even as milled 2x6s. Smells great and is creamy like Matt’s, but also isn’t a true cedar. It’s cypress.
Super cool Matt, so creative!!!

@@MattJordanWoodturning you're welcome!
I purposefully went to Port Orford to see a tree and most people there had no idea what I was talking about. Finally found one in someone’s yard. We use to use them in boat building.

Nice work the wood to be speakers.
Looks great Matt, the acoustic system will benefit greatly from a Helmholtz resonator, the speaker drivers and pushing and pulling against a closed cavity and can sound better if you calculate the volume and cut a hole to let air in and out as the drive moves.

Do you mean I could include something like a tuned bass port to make it sound better?
@RobbieHyde
9 ай бұрын
@@MattJordanWoodturning yes and there's a way to determine the size hole you will cut, it's based on the volume of the interior of the cavity I believe. If you search for Helmholtz resonator calculator in the field of loud speaker design you'll find a new rabbit hole to explore! Love the video, awesome wood turning!

Do you mind me asking what brand those incredible speakers are? I can’t get over the intricate detail. You are a dual treat craftsman!
Beautiful! Just beautiful. Be interesting to know how the wood species changes the sound with density etc. Also, the song at the end, I don't wanna cheat ... Gnarles Barkley??
@MattJordanWoodturning

There is difference in woods I've noticed, I'm not into measuring these changes though. Difficult to explain but the harder woods tend to give a dense clean sound but lack vibrato and almost clinical, while woods like this seem to have a bright ring to them if that make sense, that's my interpretation anyway. And the song at the end is called Ice & Fire and can be found here kzread.info/dash/bejne/YpiJz6WEltqpd5c.html

@@MattJordanWoodturning no I completely understand. Just like some speakers have warmth to the sound. Oh, miles away, but thankyou very much.
Sensational video.

I wonder if the speakers are wired in phase or out of phase since they are opposing eachother. It looks great.
I'd like to play Du Hast by Rammstein in that home built speaker.

Will you make several of these and sell them? They are so unique. :)

Nice work! May I know why the wood needs months to dry off? Is using a machine not possible?
@MattJordanWoodturning
9 ай бұрын
Best to leave the wood to dry naturally as much as possible if you can, reduces the number of cracks, in some cases a piece can and will split into two if its dried too fast
