Woodturning - My favorite method of carving and sculpting using the lathe - twisted cherry vessel

I made a boring cherry vessel that I wasn't very happy with and, after staring at it for about a year, I figured out what to do. This video is the carving and sculpting process and is the method that I use most often with my turnings. After starting the basic pattern, I like to hold the workpiece and use the lathe as my sculpting tool - I feel more connected to the piece this way. I can see and feel what is happening. I also use a power carver, rotary tool with a few different burrs, files, and a lot of sandpaper to complete this piece. You will see that there is a lot of back and forth between the workbench and the lathe as the pattern emerges. The hand sanding is the worst part of the process. Luckily, nothing broke along the way and I'm happy with how it turned out.

Mad Skills. One suggestion, what if you branded then sanded then signed, a lot less chance of sanding off your signature.

Thanks, man. Yeah, that probably would be the smarter way to do it. But old habits die hard. Haha. Starting this year, I’m only branding special pieces and just writing my logo on most. Funny how I’ve done that thousands of times and never really considered branding it first! Thanks for watching!

@@ChadEamesWoodWorks well,I like the carving you did, I think its great, but when you cut the top I don't understand what you get? It looks strange to me, sorry.

Fair enough. 🙂 To me, the top is what makes the piece. If I just left the small hole, it feels like it would end too abruptly and interrupt the flow of the piece. Thanks for the feedback and for watching! I hope you’ll check out some of my other videos that might be more to your taste!

I make some stuff that's pretty different, so I'm used to people not being fans of everything I make. Very often, my least favorite pieces are the ones other people love the most and the ones that sell first. Go figure... Thanks, Ken! Stay well!
