Recently I was asked if I could make a large ‘statement’ piece that could be displayed prominently within my clients home. The only instructions I received was that it had to be large bowl made mostly of wood. This bowl is what I have come up with. I am not sure if it will fit the brief, but this is almost as big as my lathe will take. The bowl is made from Nepalese Cedar, which I am told is quite rare here in Australia. I bought this end grain cookie from a friend who was moving house and couldn’t take it with them. It has been sitting on the floor in my garage for at least twelve months.
It is old, dry and difficult to turn. Despite my tools being razor sharp, there was only dust coming off them as I turned the bowl. I was surprised with the grain pattern and colour inside this piece of wood.

The bowl has been finished with Ubeaut Polishes Shellawax.
I use a WL-46A lathe from Hare and Forbes Machinery House along with a variety of chisels from different manufacturers.
