LOL ... I always say anything with more than 2 ARMS and 2 eyeballs scares the living poo out of me..I I'm sorry but that face mask would not have made it. I am the worst about being afraid of spiders it would definitely have smashed it to pieces just to get the spider I'm sorry all those spider lovers that's nice but I would have squashed it like a bug no pun intended... I always tell the spiders we have an agreement you stay outside I'm OK ...you come inside your mine.. lol

Not L.H. Burnum, Sir. It's actually "Laburnum", which is often referred to as the "Golden Chain or Golden Rain" tree, so named for the gorgeous yellow flowers it produces. I've heard it's a quite lovely turning wood. Well done project, turned out beautifully. 👍

HEY Nick~ Take some plastic wrap cut into circles, use mineral oil with mica for the colors, put the plastic in a small shot glass or a round ice cube ice cube tray and pour enough of the oil into the plastic so it will have room for air too. Tie off the top then leave a tail of clear fishing line attached as if it were a balloon. Use the disk I suggested from one of my other posts or jazz it up with an object like a melted record or an upside down fineal or a pyramid and attach the balloons with oil and air so they don't float up or got to the sides. Then do your pour. The finished piece should have a trapped bubble inside a bubble look. Again, use an up light for drama.

Nick, you said you always have trouble with Halloween projects. How about this. Get a small pumpkin. Maybe 6 or 8 inches across. Use it to make a silicone mould. Then make a resin pumpkin and hollow it out on the lathe. (If you put the pumpkin on a block of wood when you make the mould, you could use that to hold it in the chuck.) You could put a light in it, and maybe even "carve" it.

Someone probably already found this... Laburnum, Golden Chain?? Color/Appearance: Heartwood color ranges from an orangish brown to a darker violet brown, darkening with age. Clearly demarcated sapwood is a pale yellow. Laburnum’s dark color make it suitable for use as an ebony substitute, particularly within its natural range in Europe. Wide rays can exhibit ray fleck on quartersawn surfaces. Endgrain slices of Laburnum are sometimes used in making a decorative “oyster veneer” pattern for use in furniture. I hope this helps! Thank you for sharing your time and skill, that is a beautiful result!!👍🤟🪡🎨

Brooooo, that cap is cool af. Very cool idea! Aside from the cap, I agree with the wood having a mildly creepy look. My partner has schizophrenia, and during her second major episode, she ran off into the woods. After she'd got on meds and could think clearly again, she told me about the experience and she said the trees all around her were covered with eyes and mouths and tongues, staring at her. They were telling her not to worry, that they would be okay, no matter what awful things humanity could throw at them. She says it wasn't scary, but after that she felt she was a rabbit being chased by an angry dog and she hid under the brambles. The knots in the wood look vaguely like eyes, one on the bottom part and one on the top, and it kinda reminded me of that night. It was terrifying for both of us, but she's doing much better now, thanks to the awesome power of modern medicine. We both think it came out great, though! Definitely a scary real life story, though. Schizophrenia is no joke, and finding the right meds for it can literally save lives.

I have not eaten a grape since.

Haven't checked all the comments below to see if others spotted it but your turning was a bit spooky. When the wood was spinning you can see a spectral image of a grey face on the wood. I don't think I'm seeing things. It goes when the wood stops spinning. I think it's a reflection of the face/mask in the window behind you we can see towards the end of the video when you are showing off the finished product. Great fun as ever.

'Laburnum wood - newly cut heartwood is bright yellow with a greenish tint, darkening on exposure to golden-brown and then to deep brown. The thin, almost white sapwood is separable from the heartwood. It is generally straight- grained, with a fairly fine texture and a glossy surface.' Very nice Nick! Pretty wood. I love how you never really know what kind of wood it is that you're turning.

I'm SO with you on the whole spider thing! That mask would have been tossed and a new one purchased --- just in case! **shudder**

This ties into the pot quite nicely the wood is (as written on it) Laburnum. Laburnum: All parts of the common laburnum are poisonous - the bark, roots, leaves and especially the seed pods.

Laburnum: a small European tree that has hanging clusters of yellow flowers succeeded by slender pods containing poisonous seeds. The hard timber is sometimes used as an ebony substitute. Native to Central and Southern Europe, laburnums have been widely planted as ornamentals.
