You can melt the lead directly into the holes in your chess pieces, which makes it a lot easier. Just hold one of those wheel weights with a pair of tongs (or pliers, or Vise-Grips, or whatever) over the hole in the base of the chess piece, and melt it directly with a propane torch. As it melts it will drip into the hole in the chess piece. Also, if you thread the hole in the chess piece (using a coarse-threaded tap), when the lead solidifies it will be mechanically locked into those threads, which holds them permanently, unlike glue which can fail. That's how it was done by the manufacturers of the nicer vintage chess sets. See this picture for an example - i.imgur.com/UMmcncU.jpg Also, I suggest 3M Super 77 spray adhesive for attaching the felt. Wood glue creates an excellent bond between the felt and the wood, but it doesn't bond to lead at all. Super 77 bonds very well to non-porous surfaces such as metal and glass, as well as porous surfaces such as fabrics and wood.

Great recommendations. You don't have to worry about the hot lead burning the wood? Maybe it just cools off so fast when it touches the wood that it doesn't matter. Also, I guess you could use lead shot and glue, but it would be lighter than solid lead.

Very therapeutic watching this. So nicely done! I must admit the piano music was not my favorite, but the lathe work was really clean. I feel inspired. Thanks for sharing this process.

Not perfect but being done by hand that is understandable. It is quite nice. I would never thought you could do something like this.

Nice work! I really like the seemingly one piece knight design! (Is it really one piece?) EDIT: It is a one piece knight! Just checked your other videos. Honestly, I think that's one of the best knight designs I've ever seen. Well done.

I feel proud even for just viewing this video, imagine if I Made those by myself. I would surely bring them for playing chess in the club like every day. Well, it just crossed my mind while typing this comment, if the weights were made of magnets and someday you would make another chess board project made of steel or iron or tin can, then you would have a magnetic chess set.

Hi Mathieu, Thanks for the video, I've come back to it a few times Were there instances where the lead burnt through your wood blocks? Also, do you know if there is an alternative to getting the lead out, other than cutting up the block? Thank you for your service to the world :)

hey, thanks for your comment. I did not have any problem with the lead burning through the wood and I figured making some other wood mold was easy and cheap enough not to bother finding another way of removing it than cutting through the mold. I guess it could maybe be possible, but I don't have any experience with it.

¡Una verdadera obra de arte!... ¡Guao!, me provocó placer sólo observar tus videos... jajajajajaja...
